Are Rolston's Sabres better?

Six games into the Ron Rolston era, are the Sabres any better? If you look at some of the key numbers, the answer is yes.

The most important numbers are the record.  Under Rolston, the Sabres are 3-2-1 so they’ve earned seven out of a possible 12 points which equals 58%.  Under Lindy Ruff, Buffalo was 6-10-1, getting just 13 out of 34 points or 38%.

One of the areas in which the Sabres were struggling was team defense.  With Ruff behind the bench, the Sabres goals against average was 3.52 but in Rolston’s six games, its 2.56 so nearly a goal per game has been shaved off.

Secondary scoring has improved as well.  In the first 17 games of the season, forwards not named Vanek, Pominville or Hodgson combined for just 11 goals.  That same group has scored eight goals in the last six games.

Nathan Gerbe, Drew Stafford and Jochan Hecht have all broken into the goal scoring column since Rolston took over.  Gerbe has three, Stafford with two and Hecht with one.

The Sabres are also doing a better job of handling some adversity.  If you go back to Rolston’s first win, at Tampa, his club gave up a goal just 84 seconds into the game but instead of being rattled and giving up another, they shutout the Lightning over the remaining 58 plus minutes.

Tyler Myers put Buffalo up 52 seconds into the third period and they did something else that hadn’t been done with much frequency this season, protect a lead.

Two nights later against Florida, the Sabres blew a 2-0 first period lead in a matter of 56 seconds.  But a minute and twenty six seconds after seeing the Panthers tie the game, Gerbe scored to restore the lead.

The Sabres couldn’t close that game out, giving up a  tying goal to Brian Campbell with 1:26 left but they went on to win in a shootout.

At home against New Jersey, Rolston’s troops opened the third period on the power play, in a 1-1 tie but gave up a shorthanded goal.  Pominville, who basically gave up on that goal, redeemed himself 1:49 later by scoring to tie the game at two.

Hecht put the Sabres up and once again they couldn’t hold on to a lead but still earned two points with a shootout victory.

In New York two nights ago, the Sabres quickly went from leading 1-0 to trailing 2-1 after the Rangers scored a pair of power play goals in 43 seconds.  Still killing the Patrick Kaleta major, the Sabres tied the game on a Gerbe goal and gained one point with a shootout loss. http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/03/04/video-does-patrick-kaleta-need-to-change/

There are still areas that have yet to improve like the power play, which is 1-22 under Rolston.

That doesn't mean he should be the new head coach
I sincerely hope they seriously consider other coaches out there that could do a better job. First on my list would be Craig Ramsey. He's been an excellent Assistant Coach in Forida for some time now. I'd also give Patrick Roy a strong look. I hope they go outside the Sabre "Family" on this one. P.S. And if they keep Darcy (and they certainly should) he should have a major role in the selection process.

ABSOLUTELY...NOT!!!
I said it once or more and I'll say it again. DARCY HAS UNFINISHED BUSINESS WITH THIS ROSTER. THIS ROSTER IS STILL NOT GOOD ENOUGH. CAN'T YOU GUYS AT WGR GET IT??? MAYBE AFTER THIS WEEK, ALL YOU OVER THERE WILL GET IT. Maybe I'm wastingmy time on here. You guys will keep on shilling this mediocre product until you are blue in the face it seems. What a joke!!!

They are playing better
There's no doubt about that .....but I don't believe for one minute is has anything to do with the coach. Getting away from Buffalo had more to do with it then anything else.

mediocre
3-2-1 is mediocre too early to tell coaching change always gives a team a lift but it is always about the players and we lack talent the PP is aweful and that is becuse we lack hands and decison making not coaching!!

Any trades yet?
Wanna make the playoffs? They are what they are. A mediocre to below mediocre hockey team. Let's talk the WGR Celebrity Golf Tournament and wait for an announcement Darcy has been let go. No way they are better. This season is the History Channel already. Let's just call it the Giant 48 game Pre-season until October. Yes, no trades yet and no playoffs. That sums it up.

Come on Howard
You never mentioned the average goaltending in this blog. Miller blew games they should have won, especially when Ruff was still coach. What is he? God? Miller has been always an average goaltender. That is a big problem and his ego isn't any better. Miller blowing leads has been a common theme going back to the Boston playoff series. The Flyers series the year after was worse, especially in game six. His softies kill this team and it has been for a long time now.

New GM
Just think were we would be if we had a new GM !!

Hard to distinguish who is talking in interviews
You never know when you start listening in the middle of a radio interview if it's Rolston or Regier, they sound so similar.

They aren't better, they just aren't worse.
Three straight games going into a shootout? That isn't better that's just some bounces. The defense didn't suddenly become good, they just aren't having their stupidity turned into goals because Ryan Miller is playing well at the moment. The "secondary scoring" is a misnomer because Drew Stafford is supposed to be a PRIMARY goal scorer as is the gnat that, for some reason, gets way more ice time than he should or would get anywhere else. Bottom line is that they are bottom feeders that are on a bit of a run right now. Nothing and no one is going to change that simple fact and unless Darcy Regier gets fired for putting this garbage on the ice for YEARS now, nothing will change.

its all darcy's fault
this mess is darcy's fault. every game that they win i cringe at the thought of pegula and black just MAYBE giving him another year. i expect no moves will be made, which makes this year exactly like every other year. penalty killing is about hustle and positioning. power play is about skill. thats all- SKILL. they arent average, they are putrid. and thats EXACTLY who the sabres are- not average. every game that the sabres win from this point forward only hurts the team. it gets them farther away from a potential difference maker at the top of the draft. terry, PLEASE FIRE REGIER and hire somebody that knows how to build a winner. how about burke???

2 steps back
Fire sale! Crash and burn. High pick in the draft. We do this in this short season so we don't do it next year.
03/05/2013 6:14PM
the mess that is the Buffalo Sabres
Ron Rolston inherited a team that is a mess in many ways. He's not a miracle worker, and no one should expect him to be one. I doubt Scotty Bowman or any other great coach could be expected to turn this team around by the end of the season. Will the Sabres allow Regier to make trades up to the trade deadline in April especially if he may be fired at the end of the sason? Or are they just going to ride out the season, fire Regier, bring in a new GM, and let him go to work trying to turn this team around.

Unbelievable - Mr. Minus Myers
I have been a loyal sabres fan since 1971...after 2 periods the sabres are down by 2 and guess who was on the ice for both goals albeit one was on the penalty? Yep, you guessed it another night of atrocious decisions, positioning and plays by Mr. Minus Myers...he has the minus touch...just another replay he's been the same in about 17 of the games he has played so far. Sure looks like more like Mike Wilson and turning into a another Darcy bust. Why not move him for some draft picks...I'm sure there are others on the farm that can play better than him at this level. Dear Mr. Black and Pegula I hope that you recognize we are witnessing 2 stanley ciup contenders on sunday and today (rangers and canes) and recognize what separates them from the sabres: the effort is there but the size (strength, leverage, and positioning) and reach are too often missing...their guys guys can skate and outreach and outposition our guys on the puck. That's one of the main reasons for lack of offensive and defensive zone puck possession. We have a few size guys like Myers and Vanek but the few we have are either one deimensional or severaly lacking in other skills, namely adequate speed. If you want the cup you need to rework the roster to get rid of some more of the undersized guys (Gerbe, Leopold, Pominville)and the guys that have too many holes in their game (Myers, Regehr, Vanek), whether it be poise, discipline, speed, physicality. Yes, I included Vanek and Vanek, due to their penchant for poor descionmaking, includingVaneks poor choice leading to a carolina 2 on 0 while the sabres were on a power play. Right now as consituted the sabres wouldn't last more than 5 games to the rangers or canes unless they sustained significant amount of injuries. Its now 42 years and counting without a cup, its time to act...it should start with Regier's dismissal. His biggest fault is inability to shed the deadweight before it becomes an albatross. And I haven't even gotten to Ville Leino and Bob Corkum.

03/06/2013 7:46AM
the truth is
... this team is not very good. This collection of players is severely over-rated locally. The general manager os rspsonsible for this mess; most of the Sabres are not smart hockey players... and they certainly are consistently beaten to loose pucks what heppened to the speed they brought to the new NHL? Daniel Snyder made the very same management mistakes when he took over the Redskins, his boyhood dream. They need a proven hockey man, not this Bill Torre wannabe.

Ryan Miller Sucked Again against Carolina
How about finally doing a write up about Mr Softee losing another game. Beaten by a third stringer??? That was just another average performance and all four against were weak. Let's begin the Fire Sale by dumping Miller first. I can't take him anymore. Awful, just awful. He is worse than last season. Trade the bum!!!

DARCY MUST GO! ALL TOGETHER NOW...
DARCY MUST GO!!! DARCY MUST GO!!! DARCY MUST GO!!! DARCY MUST GO!!!

Just a compliment
Great job shilling this awesome hockey team guys. You all must be told to do it. Things got awful cool after Lindy got pushed out of here by you and the fans and then felt sorry for him. Correct me if I'm wrong. Things changed all of a sudden. Why? They still suck and you at the station are promoting it like you were told to do so. Pee poor radio if you ask me shills.

Are the Sabres better?
NO!!
03/06/2013 3:14PM
Still one of the worst teams in the NHL
The players as a whole just are not good enough. It's the wrong mix of players all together. From a talent standpoint it's not a terrible team...but these players just don't have enough of the intangibles that the good, very good and great teams have. Scotty Bowman would have a difficult time winning with these players. Rolston really can't do a lot to turn this around. Sure Ruff mismanaged a ton of things with these players and it was certainly the right decision to give him the boot. The problems this team has is more a reflection of Darcy Regier's inadequate personnel decisons. Overrated (actaully bad) drafts most of his tenure here. Lopsided trades in which the Sabres lost out big time. Not signing the most important players and letting them leave via free agency. Darcy Regier must be fired once the Sabres are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. They will be eliminated very soon. Regier getting fired cannot wait until the season is over. He can't build a contending team that can win a cup and it's time to bring in a GM that can do that.

Different coach...same results...
I didn't disagree with letting Lindy go(it's not his fault) but it's the same team, same players that still are very inconsistent..they play great at times and very poorly at others...no COACH can change that....AGAIN it's the PLAYERS

When assessing the Bills defense, what has been the biggest problem?
  It was mostly coaching
It was mostly a lack of talent
It was 50/50 coaching and talent
