2013 NFL Mock Draft #1

(WGR 550) -- With the 2013 NFL Draft being less than two months away, it's time for the first look at a mock draft. It's almost fruitless to write anything in this paragraph, seeing as how the majority of you all just clicked on the link and scrolled down by now.

However, if you have read this far, you need to remember one important thing about mock drafts. With so much time to go in between now and the draft, these are done for entertainment purposes only. They are fun for fans to think about the possibilities that could unfold on draft day.

Things will surely get switched around once the free agency period starts up and then cools off. Once that does, I'll post another mock draft. Until we get within a week or two of the draft, however, mock drafts should always be taken with a grain of salt.

If you've made it this far, you get a virtual high-five. I won't delay you any longer. On to the picks.

Round 1

1) - OT Luke Joeckel, Texas A&M
- The cutting of Eric Winston all but assured the pick would be a tackle. The bigger question, can Eric Fisher take over Joeckel for first pick honors?

2)  - CB Dee Milliner, Alabama
- With Derek Cox and Rashean Mathis both gone, the Jaguars need a cornerback badly.

3) - DT Sharrif Floyd, Florida

4)   - DE/OLB Dion Jordan, Oregon

5)  (via DET) - QB Geno Smith, West Virginia
- With Milliner off the board, there's no true 4-3 defensive end to take for the Lions. So they find trade partners in the Jets who move up ahead of quarterback alley (Cleveland, Arizona, Buffalo) to secure Geno Smith. They give up their 3rd round pick and their 4th round pick in 2014 to do so.

6)  - DE/OLB Ziggy Ansah, BYU

7)  - OT Eric Fisher, Central Michigan
- The Cardinals are tempted to go quarterback here, but their offensive line was a mess. No quarterback is going to succeed in Arizona without being protected. If Fisher and Joeckel are both gone, the odds of it being a quarterback are high.

8)  - WR Cordarrelle Patterson, Tennessee
- In need of another playmaker at the wide receiver position, the Buffalo Bills use their first pick on a player that could turn in to an All-Pro with the right coaching. When Cordarrelle Patterson gets the ball in his hands and in the open-field, watch out. For his size (6-foot-2, 216-pounds) Patterson has great speed and has tremendous field vision. He's a threat to run reverses, he's even thrown a pass at the college level. A player with this much raw talent doesn't last too long, even though he has only the one season at Tennessee. If the Bills take him, Patterson will work with receivers coach Ike Hilliard intensively, and try to learn the NFL from his old Rock Hill, South Carolina pal Stephon Gilmore.

9)  (via NYJ) - CB Xavier Rhodes, Florida State
- The Lions move down and grab the second best cornerback, with eyes on a defensive end later on.

10)  - OG Chance Warmack, Alabama

11) - OT Lane Johnson, Oklahoma

12) - OG Jonathan Cooper, North Carolina

13) (via TB) - OLB Jarvis Jones, Georgia
- With the Steelers outside linebackers in flux, they move up a few spots to grab Jarvis Jones and hope he can take over for James Harrison.

14) - DT Star Lotulelei, Utah

15) - OLB Barkevious Mingo, LSU
- If he lasts this long, the Saints will be ecstatic. Especially considering their switch to the 3-4 as well as the college ties.

16)  - WR Tavon Austin, West Virginia

17) (via PIT) - CB Desmond Trufant, Washington

18) - DT Sheldon Richardson, Missouri

19) - LB Alec Ogletree, Georgia

20) (via CHI) - DE Bjoern Werner, Florida State
- Needing to refill the defensive ends on the team, the Falcons move up to bring in Werner. He's one of the best true 4-3 defensive end prospects in this draft.

21)  - LB Arthur Brown, Kansas State

22)  (via STL) - WR DeAndre Hopkins, Clemson
- If Matt Schaub is going to succeed in Houston, he needs another target to go along with Andre Johnson. Hopkins could be a stud in the NFL.

23) - DT Kawann Short, Purdue

24) - DE/OLB Damontre Moore, Texas A&M

25) - WR Keenan Allen, Cal

26) - S Kenny Vaccaro, Texas

27) (via STL, through HOU) - OT D.J. Fluker, Alabama
- In need of a right tackle, Jacksonville doesn't wait and trades up to get the mammoth Fluker. St. Louis trades down after missing out on Vaccaro.

28) - DT Jesse Williams, Alabama

29) (via NE) - DE Datone Jones, UCLA
- Here's that defensive end they're looking for. The Lions will be stressing defense this year. Moving down earlier afforded them the opportunity to move back in to the first round. Meanwhile New England does what they always do, move down and rack up picks for next year.

30) (via ATL) - TE Tyler Eifert, Notre Dame
- Ten picks later, the Bears can still get their guy at tight end.

31) - DE/DT Jonathan Hankins, Ohio State

32) - ILB Kevin Minter, LSU

Round Two

33) (via JAX) - S Matt Elam, Florida

34)  (via SF, through KC) - QB Matt Barkley, USC
- The Bills trade up seven spots, giving up their 41st overall pick and their third round pick in 2014 to get ahead of Philadelphia and Arizona to get their quarterback. Think of the overall fit with the incoming offense. Nathaniel Hackett's play-calling is heavily influenced by both West Coast philosophies and the K-Gun. Barkley, possessing a much better arm than most give him credit for, is said to be a perfect fit for an offense that uses a lot of West Coast principles. He's shown leadership qualities, he's gone through adversity and he's put up big numbers after starting four straight seasons at one of the toughest programs in college football. I also can see the Bills using a 4th or 5th round pick, in addition to Barkley, on a running quarterback that can give them some read-option versatility (Matt Scott comes to mind).

Some people will argue this pick for a few reasons, so let's dispel them, shall we? 1) "All USC quarterbacks are busts!" Stop with the ignorance. Every quarterback prospect is different. They have different skill sets and different personalities that lead them to varying results in the NFL. Oh, yeah, and Carson Palmer was not a bust. 2) "The last thing the Bills need is another California quarterback. They need someone to play in the cold!" Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning, Andy Dalton. Four 'warm-weather' quarterbacks from their youth that play, and thrive in the cold regularly. 3) "He doesn't have the arm to play in Buffalo!" I asked Buddy Nix about that, and he said he believes he does. Besides, how many games with bad weather conditions are there in a season? One or two? An overstated argument. I'm not saying this will definitely happen, but those that think Barkley is being discounted from the conversation are sadly mistaken.

35) - QB E.J. Manuel, Florida State

36) (via DET) - CB Jamar Taylor, Boise State

37) - HB Eddie Lacy, Alabama

38) - QB Mike Glennon, NC State
- With Fisher in the first round, the Cardinals conceivably have the offensive tackle to protect Glennon's blindside.

39) - LB Manti Te'o, Notre Dame
- In need of an inside linebacker the Jets draft Te'o, making every reporter of the team groan for getting this year's version of Tim Tebow. Oh yeah, Tebow is still on their roster, too.

40) - DE Alex Okafor, Texas

41)  (via BUF) - TE Zach Ertz, Stanford

Interesting
I'm okay with almost all of this, especially the Bills' picks. I'm a little worried about Patterson's possible one-year-wonder label, and wouldn't mind swapping Xavier Rhodes for him, but I wouldn't blame for going with the potential stud WR.
03/08/2013 11:15AM
love it
If we can get Barkley there it would be very good value.
03/08/2013 11:18AM
BARKLEY is AWFUL
Watch his hail mary pass at the end of the stanford game and tell me he has a strong arm..brutal. The dude gave it his all and threw the ball 40 yards...
03/08/2013 11:20AM
Is Matt BArkley better than Fitz????
Can you honestly tell me Matt Barkley is definitely better than Ryan Fitzpatrick, I'm pretty sure that answer is NO...and Carson Palmer is a COMPLETE and UTTER BUST..not sure how you can argue he isn't...USC is always loaded with talent, which makes their QB's appear much better than they really are. Barkley is no different..
03/08/2013 11:23AM
USC point
Saying USC QBs can't cut it is not ignorant, it is backed up by stats. Here are 14 USC QBs drafted into the NFL:Mark Sanchez, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Sean Salisbury, Rodney Peete, Pat Haden, Matt Cassel, Bill Nelsen, Pete Beathard, Vince Evans, Paul McDonald, Todd Marinovich, Rob Johnson AND John David Booty. The only one you can make a case for is Palmer but even he has not been considered an elite QB by any stretch of the imagination. I realize that every prospect is different and there is of course a chance Barkely could be a good NFL QB but it seems like that would be a very rare occurance.

2013 NFL MOCK DRAFT
I like the Patterson pick. The Bills have been lacking a true #1 WR since Moulds left. I'm concerned about Barkley's shoulder injury, but moreso about him lasting untill the 2nd round. We may have to move back into the late 1st to secure him if that's their guy.

2013 nfl mock dratf
I like the Patterson pick. The Bills have been lacking a true #1 WR for quite some time. I'm concerned about Barkley's shoulder injury, but also about him lasting untill the 2nd round. We may have to move back into the late 1st to secure him if that's their guy.

nfl mock draft
I like the Patterson pick. The Bills have been lacking a true #1 WR since Moulds left. I'm concerned about Barkley's shoulder injury, but ALSO about him lasting untill the 2nd round. We may have to move back into the late 1st to secure himif that's their guy.
03/08/2013 12:23PM
LB K Greene Rutgers
Do you think he'll last util round 3?
03/08/2013 12:37PM
Idiot
So not only do you predict the order players are taken but you predict trades also. Thats 10 min. I will never get back.
03/08/2013 12:56PM
nice job
While I like your mock draft and the time you took to do it, I hope this is not the route they go. I can completly see this happening but also see LB first round and WR later in draft, this year will make or break Nix. I hope he knocks the draft out of the park and proves he is the right man here, only time will tell. I am not sold on any quarterbacks this year, what is one more year of crappy Fitz and address a lot of other needs in the draft. Give them a year to develop and a better crop of Qbs next year.
03/08/2013 1:23PM
Season tix
I would cancel my seasons if they did this. This may be one of the worst mock's i've seen this year!
03/08/2013 1:32PM
is this a joke?
This is the NFL. No matter how bad you may think this years class is, there is no way only 1 QB goes in round 1.
03/08/2013 1:57PM
Good Mock
Ive looked at alot of mocks that that basically look the same. You put some thought into this. I think Barkley is being over-scrutinized. Ive seen him throw some deep passes on a rope. I wouldnt be surprised if they took him 8th.
03/08/2013 2:02PM
LB on 1st Pick!
I like the Barkley pick, im not sure bout the 1 yr wonder WR id rather see a Stud LB!!!
03/08/2013 2:06PM
Fair enough...
I could live with that as long as they sign Levitre and address linebacker in free agency.
03/08/2013 2:18PM
With Climate Change Comes Wind
When it's 60 degrees in early Dec. the winds will be gusting threw the stadium and you better have a strong armed QB. It's not about the cold or snow, it's about gusty conditions that a QB must deal with.
03/08/2013 2:47PM
A work in progress @ #8???????
The last thing the Bills need to do with the #8 pick is to take a receiver that has the physical tools but is unproven, come on already. @ #8 with all the talent that is available on both sides of the ball, the Bills NEED a player that is going to come in and have an impact immediately if not sooner to help this team more forward. With Ansah and Jordan off the board before #8 why not Werner,Mingo,Moore,Ogletree,Jones, etc etc etc?
03/08/2013 3:17PM
this is a joke.
so instead of giving up a 3 this year and a 4 next year for geno...you want/think the bills will give up MORE than that on barkley...and then use ANOTHER pick on ANOTHER qb? lol...this is the most comical thing ive seen or read.
03/08/2013 4:47PM
No
Unless Calvin Johnson or the second coming of Andre Reed is available in the 1st, you don't take a WR in the top ten.
03/08/2013 5:04PM
this draft is heaven!!!
PLEASE PICK UP ADRIAN WILSON- feels great! cant wait!
03/08/2013 5:06PM
GENO SMITH OR BUST! And IT'S ALWAYS WINDY at The Ralph!
I think they FINALLY understand the meaning of "FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK" and THEY WILL TRADE DOWN TO GET SMITH! By the way BAD WEATHER means alot of things. ITS ALWAYS WINDY in the Ralph! Recievers can be had in free agency. MR SOFTEE IS ELITE! FOREVER4
03/08/2013 6:55PM
The worst mock draft yet
Barkley and to move up to get him I hope not!!!!
03/08/2013 7:41PM
Not bad
If the Bills get these 2 in the first 2 rounds I won't complain, but I will be surprised if only one quarterback goes in the first round. Quarterbacks seem to always move up on everyone's board in the last month before the draft no matter howlow they're projected earlier. Besides I do think Nix will stick to the south or Syracuse for his QB.
03/08/2013 8:03PM
Barkley
Joe, if this pans out, i know we say it every year but if we can snag Barkley and Patterson, this has the "potential" to be a franchise saving draft. I don't know how much more fans can take, I also think you need big names to sell tickets, nobody is rushing out to get tickets to see Fitz and Tavares Jackson, it is a joke that they want to keep these guys, I don't want Nassib, sorry. Man on man, I think Patterson can be had at 8, and do not hesitate to take him, yes WR can be a boom or bust, but seriously there is no such thing as a safe pick anymore. Gotta swing for the fences, and if Barkley is close, I think you try to trade up to grab him, I have a good feeling about Barkley, I have an instinct this guy will be a solid QB, I think he has a bit of a chip on his shoulder as well. As much as getting these 2 guys would be huge, this will be tough to pull off, other teams need WR and QB, Barkley lasting till #34 is a long time.
03/08/2013 9:34PM
Mock draft trade
Why wouldn't the Bills trade up to #5 to have a shot at Geno Smith? If they view him as the #1 QB prospect and he gets past Oakland, it wouldn't cost that much to move up 3 places in the picking order. plus, Nix has said that he knows that ifyou really like a QB, you need to be prepared to move higher to grab him--even if it means picking him a few spots earlier than his overall ranking on your board warrants.
03/08/2013 11:07PM
I hope not
Project at #8 and underachiever at #34. I'd rather do Chance Warmack at #8, Zach Ertz at #41 and Nassib in 3rd round. Get a Free Agent WR and LB and now we are talking.
03/09/2013 1:41AM
I Dont Think So
Jarvis Jones. A real playmaker! The Bills biggest need is @ linebacker. They need inside and outside linebackers. They dont have anything there.
03/09/2013 7:52AM
Same move, different QB
EJ Manuel will be a star, Barkley not so much.
03/09/2013 8:52AM
good job joe
lol if it could only happen. i dont think a free agent wide receiver would sign here with no quarterback all you have to do is look at Larry Fitzgerald without a quarterback he was just another guy running around the field so Patterson would be forced tocome here..lol..I think your right about Barkley. not a big arm but he is smart. i mean jamarcus russell had a big arm but no accuracy and didnt put forth the effort what it took to be and NFL quarterback.
03/09/2013 8:56AM
thanx
About time Joe, I've been waiting for your Mock Drafts.
03/09/2013 8:57AM
Refuse to Believe
Joe knows a lot more about these players than I do...a lot more...but I would bet my house on the fact that there will be more than 1 QB taken in the first round. You can't win without a QB, and the eight or so teams without one in the NFL know that.
03/09/2013 8:57AM
F.A.
I can't wait to see how Free Agency signings affect your Mock Drafts Joe. Keep up the good work.
03/09/2013 11:28AM
Geno is horrible...
Being a Cuse fan I have had the privilege to watch Geno, Barkley and obviously Nassib in person, multiple times. The way that Scott S.'s defense made Geno look on ALL occasions has to have a strong impact on weather or not Marrone thinks he can win with this guy. While I am also leery of us taking Nassib due to inconsistencies, I almost wonder if he might be better suited to the NFL game than the at the college level. Though he could certainly have displayed more touch as many of his dropped passes were due to too much velocity, many of those passes would have been caught by NFL caliber receivers. If either of the tackles slips to 8 then I wouldn't mind pulling the trigger there and taking a Hamilton or kid from Louisiana Tech in the third.
03/09/2013 12:17PM
draft
whatever we do will be "outside the box" and surprising for #8. we always get these fringe spots of when you can't get elite talent/starters right away (whitner, spiller, gilmore). it takes a little more time for the player to mature. idon't think there is any consensus to what we are going to do in mocks right now because we don't know yet. i'd rather trade down and pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick. too many holes to fill right now.
03/09/2013 2:55PM
Draft
You are about to lose an important member of the offensive line and you end up reaching for both a wr and qb when there are other higher rated players of need on the board. Based on who you have available in the draft at time of pick, first round should be highest rated offenseive line or defensive player, in this case either lance johnson, jarvis jones or Star L. Filling the biggest area of need, let's get Johnson to left tackle, kick glenn down to RT and LG in draft or free agency and solidify the OL for the next 4 to five years. In the second round, based on who is available and area of need, WR, TE, S, or LB , let's go defense and grab safety Jonathan Cyprien, highest rated player on board. The bills can get a WR by trading back into two to get Swoope from Texas Tech, Williams from Baylor. Or stay where they are in three to see if WR falls or get Sio Moore, K. Green or J Collins at OLB, one should fall to them.
03/09/2013 10:23PM
mocking trades?
makes no sense mocking like 8 trades
03/10/2013 4:08AM
pffft
Nix thinks Barkley's arm is good enough. It's all I need to hear. Draft someone else. The team never winning says all we need to know about what Buddy thinks. Should be a comedy show... What Buddy thinks. First show "I know we need a QB, but I will wait to draft one the year there isn't a good one in the draft".
03/10/2013 8:34AM
1st/2nd pick
1st round pick should be the future hof qb- ryan nassib!! barkley another in a long line of usc qb failures. 2nd pick, could go one of 2 ways, lb or wr. both positions are represented very highly. this yearspool is deep at all the need positions for our bills. no panic. i feel the bills after this draft will be looked at as relevant once more.
03/10/2013 12:23PM
Mallet may be available
Brady for three more years in NE. Mallet may want to be moved to start somewhere. Buffalo??? Do a three way trade to get him.
03/10/2013 1:45PM
So on board with this
This is exactly what needs to happen this year. Every QB has flaws, but Barkley has what we need. Brains, pocket presence, standing tough under pressure, and phenomenal character. This kid is going to be a star, and I wouldn't pass on him. Patterson's playmaking abilities are ridiculous....go watch the youtube video of his highlights....against SEC teams, and tell me he's not going to perform at the pro level.....anyone that thinks otherwise needs to get checked out. This is the draft that changes this franchise.
03/11/2013 11:28AM
at no. 8 the jills ahem bills select from university of alaska punter JOE ESKIMO!
ITS ON ESPN RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!MORTENSEN JUST REPORTED IT!
03/11/2013 12:07PM
nix
nix was the same guy that said fitz had a strong arm he's got eyes like helen keller
03/11/2013 12:52PM
This years draft for immediate results and instant gratification.
Round #1 QB! Round #2 QB! This is a no brainer! Check the last 12 seasons, without a real NFL starting QB and 2nd stringer? No castoffs from other teams seem to work for Buffalo? Rookie qbs have taken other teams to the playoffs the last few seasons, why not the Bills?
03/13/2013 10:17AM
Patterson
Is a project. Your words "could turn into an All-Pro" suggest that there is something big missing from the total package. This is not a strong draft for receivers. This guy is not a Megatron, Julio Jones, or AJ Green. Highly unlikely he will ever be one of those WR's. Receivers should only ever be drafted in the 1st round if they are a sure bet. This guy is the furthest thing from a sure bet. Besides they are now in a position where this absolutely cannot be the pick. With Fitzpatrick now out the door, it's QB at 8. Throw this mock draft in the garbage Joe.
03/13/2013 4:28PM
Why the hate for mocking trades?
They tend to happen, so trying to include them isn't any worse than just doing a straight mock based upon the needs of the team? None of the draft talking heads know teams draft boards and how much they like players (save Buddy Nix telegraphing a few picks), why not try to predict something more interesting that BPA at pick #41?
03/15/2013 8:14AM
GENO SMITH!!!
Make sure Coach Marrone puts in a (SIMPLE) game plan for him!! !Too difficult, sure failure!!! This is for all you people that want him???
03/17/2013 2:12AM
Mock drafts are fake take it easy and ponder the possibilities. WHY SO SERIOUS!!
(IMO) That is IN MY OPINION. Which i do have one. Patterson #8 overall is good choice. Ive watched film on him and i am very impressed. The guy is explosive in the open field and moves like a bigger CJ spiller. In other words he has great vision. If you watch him you will see its almost like he sees a couple moves ahead. Trading up to #34 from #41 does make sense and even Buddy Nix said they would trade up to get a QB. This may not be who we eventually trade with but i do believe we will have to. With the Barkley pic i am not sold. Watching film on him i am not impressed, allthough i would take him in the 3rd round if hes there. I actually would like to take EJ Manuel. I know that is not a popular pick but that is who I would like to see. The guy is 6'5", runs like a deer and throws the ball a ton. That being said i would not mind if Nassib(my second favorite), Wilson, or Manuel are taken here. Round 3 i See us taking justin pugh OG from Cuse. RD 4 Alec Lemon WR Cuse. RD 5 Matt Scott QB Arizona. RD 6 not sure on this one but probly a ILB from somewhere. Last but not least Go Bills!!

When assessing the Bills defense, what has been the biggest problem?
  It was mostly coaching
It was mostly a lack of talent
It was 50/50 coaching and talent
