Bills release Ryan Fitzpatrick

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- The Buffalo Bills and Ryan Fitzpatrick are officially parting ways.

The team announced Tuesday afternoon that they have released Fitzpatrick, after starting the better part of three seasons with the Bills. After attempting to restructure a contract to keep the quarterback with the organization, Fitzpatrick declined the offer.

According to league sources, the Bills offered Fitzpatrick a four-year deal, with a base salary of $3 million and an opportunity to earn an extra $4 million per season through incentives. Instead of taking the offer, Fitzpatrick declined and the team subsequently moved on.

The cap hit for Fitzpatrick in 2013 will not be the full $10 million, because the Bills are using the post-June 1 waiver designation. That means Fitzpatrick will account for $3 million on this year's cap, and $7 million on the 2014 salary cap.

Fitzpatrick originally signed a six-year, $59 million contract extension during the 2011 season that forced the Bills to make a decision on Wednesday, March 13 at the latest. If Fitzpatrick remained on the roster past that date, the Bills would have owed him a $3 million roster bonus. If the quarterback remained on the roster in 2013, he would have carried a cap hit of $10.45 million.

General Manager Buddy Nix said the following of the release:

"We kept every possible option open right down to the wire when we had to make the decision on whether to keep Ryan. In the end, we had to do what we feel is best for our football team and it was a very difficult decision.

"Ryan did some great things as our starting quarterback. He is a class act, a terrific guy with a great family and has been involved in many charitable endeavors in our community. But difficult decisions often have to be made and so we are moving forward. We wish Ryan and his family the best of luck in the future and offer him our sincere thanks for everything he has done for the Bills.”

Fitzpatrick played four seasons with the Bills, amassing a 20-33 record in 53 total starts. He threw for a total of 11,654 yards, 81 touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns 64 interceptions, had 15 fumbles lost and a 59.8 completion percentage.

The plus side
At least he still has his harvard degree
03/12/2013 4:49PM
Can the Sabres pick him up?
He could replace Tyler Myers to improve some of our two-way defensemen issues.
03/12/2013 4:53PM
WELL.. Bellichick finally CRIES; HELLO GENO SMITH and BEASTS ARE RISIN!!

i think the prank phone call scenario may have sealed the deal
03/12/2013 5:00PM
Wish Him Well
You know, I never disliked Fitz. I always liked the guy and wished he would have excelled, but after the contract, he just totally flat. But, I'm glad he's gone because this franchise needs to move on. Unfortunately I wish Buddy and Whaley would have went with him. Residual Crud.
03/12/2013 5:04PM
Fitzpatrick
Bills performing anal reconstruction surgery after three for phucking years of mediocrity. Ralph needs to die and Buffalo needs to move on from this pathetic game....All the games are for now is for drunk idiots to blow off steam from living in such a horrible city.. Note: You can get drunk at home and watch football too...
03/12/2013 5:21PM
I knew Fitz would be cut from Buffalo when....
the audio feed from the Pats game recorded him screaming like a little girl. I know Bills brass want to win, but they also want guys who know how to sound like men when they win too. Sorry Fitz, you're great guy, just not a great NFL QB.
03/12/2013 5:25PM
Good job Buddy......
...you refused to play Tavaris Jackson last year to see what he could do, and now you have no choice but to look at him. There are no other options at this point unless you want to start Thigpen. Where did you get the idea that you could be a GM in this league? Just do us a favor and resign you old goat!
03/12/2013 5:36PM
Fitz
and so Nix cuts ties with yet another mistake - the 14th rebuilding yr begins.
03/12/2013 5:41PM

03/12/2013 6:13PM

May the best man win at training camp and pre-season?
03/12/2013 6:13PM

that's ridiculous the afc east team make major move to improve and the bills is watching the parade.the only good move is fitzpatrick
03/12/2013 6:48PM
Bills release...
mediocrity
03/12/2013 6:54PM
Fitz:
Good bye....now what?
03/12/2013 7:14PM
Fitz
C Ya Noodle arm.
03/12/2013 7:29PM
David C
It is about time....it seems that people have forgotten that RF was a Third string QB that amounted to lastman standing...ie: was given the starters job!!!!!!!
03/12/2013 7:29PM
bills offered him less than their backup corner/punt returner was being resigned for
fitz has his pride, hard to accept a backup's wage as QB when he still believes he can be a starter in the NFL. More important, he knew the fan base wanted a change.
03/12/2013 7:41PM
Great guy, not good enough QB
I really wanted Fitz to succeed as a Bill, because obviously the team would have succeeded as well, but also because he seems like such a good person. But every fourth quarter, when the game was on the line, he'd mess up. He wasn't going toget better, and the team wasn't going to win with him. Better to lose with someone new.
03/12/2013 7:54PM
Sorry Fitz
but Jeremy White is a non-stop talking tool.
03/12/2013 8:37PM
hmmmm....
smart...yes...raw talent...not so much. I hope they can find someone ready to start next season.
03/12/2013 8:40PM
NO Experience at QB
Now the Bills dont have a QB with NFL experience, other than 3rd stringer Tavares Jackson, who didnt play a down last year. This team is going nowhere this year. There isnt a rookie QB in the draft you can win with. There are NO capable free agent QBs. You need a quarterback to win. The team ahead of Buffalo, Miami gets better and better, signing free agents.
03/12/2013 9:06PM
3 years too late
What the Buffalo Bills saw in Fitz I will never understand. I guess I shouldn't be surprised though seeing as the Bills have no eye for talent and haven't had an eye for talent for the past 15-20 years. it is just amazing that in todays modern NFL that there can be a NFl team (the Bills) that is absolutly clueless and makes such horrible and obviously poor personel choices. Anyone with an average football IQ could have told you Fitz was nothing more than a slightly below average QB, at best. Well, don't hold your breath Bills fans. You all know that the Bills will either draft or pick up another complete waste of time guy at the QB position and will stick with him as the starting QB for 3-4 years, as is the pattern with the Buffalo Bills.. Nothing the Bills do works out because the organization top down beginning with Ralph Wilson is as dysfunctional as it can get in pro sports.
03/12/2013 9:14PM
Who will the next bum be?
Who cares who the Bills quaterback is. The Bills will just bring in another QB who is below average and will keep him as the starter for 3 or more years until the next new coach is hired. The Bills have no clue and never really have in over 55 years. How on earth is that crusty and creepy Ralph Wilson in the Canton Pro Football Hall of Fame? He is easily the worst NFL owner and possibly the worst pro-sports owner in the history of sports. Oh well, what else would you expect in a city as crappy as Buffalo, NY. Do people still live in that city?
03/12/2013 9:20PM
Fitz was horrible from day 1
Can anyone tell me why the Bills kept Fitz aas the starting QB after his first full season? I do not understand what the Bills saw in him. Obviously the Bills are admitting to yet another huge miss and mistake in talent evaluation. How come other NFL teams get rig of bad players much sooner than the Bills? 4 years of Fitz is inexcusable. He should have been let go after year 1.
03/12/2013 9:53PM
wow
i am 70 yrs old ,,we have a chance again.classy guy very little talent..bye fitz..
03/12/2013 10:12PM
The fact it took this many years...
to realize fitz is garbage is why the bills are the laughingstock of the league. Well, that and the joke of a GM and CEO they have. Funny how nix calls people who draft qb's 'lucky' - no buddy, when you need a qb, you try drafting some - it's just common sense. And no, there is no guarantee any qb you pick will do well, but you should be used to picking duds at pretty much every other position, so why not try qb here in year 4? Maybe YOU will get lucky, god knows you'd have to for us to end up with a good one.
03/12/2013 10:18PM
breaking news!
buffalo signs Bill white and joe black from the hamilton tigers practice squad to long term contracts!!
03/12/2013 10:28PM
oooooo
now the bills can draft nassib a younger fitzpatrick...whats the point with this franchise..lose a guard fill a hole draft some qb in the first round that isnt a first round pick it never ends
03/12/2013 11:03PM
oh yes the bills
will attract alot of free agent wide receivers with no quarterback..lol...does get any worse? a last place finish and number 1 pick next year no doubt about it
03/13/2013 1:18AM
Tebow
We need Tebow
03/13/2013 1:57AM
good riddance
fitzamish, you stink
03/13/2013 5:30AM
Duh
How do they even intend on attracting a High School Wide Reciever in Free Agency without A starting QB? You let All your recievers go too.. D I S F U N C T I O N A L - Nix
03/13/2013 6:33AM
Bumsfan
Fish sign Wallace and Elerbee - good luck to the Bills. Nix is looking for his gerital while others are getting it done. Bills have cap room but it looks like rebuilding for the upteenth time is next. If you think fans suffered with Fitz just wait until the rookie flops. Rookies who succeed usually come to a team that has all the other parts in place and the Bills don't so any rookie or young QB is likely to fail miserably.
03/13/2013 6:52AM
good by
GM check some high school for a QB, I think that you do.Time to retired .
03/13/2013 8:04AM
Now just get rid of the 3 stooges
Nix, Galley and Brandon need to go too!
03/13/2013 8:06AM
Time to go!
I don't feel too bad as you leave with a pocket full of money and a good education. Perhap football is just a stop along the way in lifes path for you.
03/13/2013 8:11AM
ROOKIE QBS CAN WIN!!!!
ROOKIE QBS CAN WIN, ROOKIE QBS CAN WIN, ROOKIE QBS CAN WIN!!!!! IM NOT SURE ABOUT ABOUT (Geno Smith) FROM WVU, HE STUNK THE 2ND HALF OF THE SEASON, WITH 2 GREAT RECEIVERS AND GOOD RUNNING BACK? BETTER QBS OUT THERE, BUT WE WILL SEE.
03/13/2013 9:45AM
Class Guy, Backup Quarterback
OK, Buddy, you finally woke up. I would fire you now for putting your faith in Fitz.. The quarterbacks we passed over the past three years is incredible and now you are forced to draft one when the pickings is not as good. Dumb move
03/13/2013 10:24AM
An O-line would help
Fitzpatrick was never gonna be the guy, but whoever they get, they need a consistent O-line or they'll end up with yet another shell-shocked, confused, mildly talented dude back there wishing he was backing up Brady.
03/13/2013 3:46PM
What happened?
We all remember fondly the start of the 2011 season, when the Bills were 4-0 and then 5-2. Dont we? Where did that go, whatever it was. Wasn't that about the time they gave Ryan Fitzpatrick that huge contract, and he then proceeded to tank??? Everyone was lauding him then...what happened? And who do we get now? Doug Flutie, where are you?? Dave
03/14/2013 7:33PM
re: TEBOW.... YESSS!!!
That's perfect for this franchise.. what better way to stay consistent and keep the succession of terrible qb's coming here!!! IDIOT!!! 4VR4.
03/14/2013 7:39PM
Buffalo Bills Greatest Mediocre QB Hits...
Flutie (no arm); Johnson(no brain) Bledsoe(no heart) Holcomb(no arm) Lossman(no brain) Edwards(no balzz) Fitzpatrick(no arm).
03/15/2013 9:55AM
whichever qb gets drafted.............
will be ruined by this organization!I guarantee he isnt starting on opening day as management will say he isnt ready and either jackson or a free agent pickup/trade qb will be starting!! just watch and see I HAVE SPOKEN!!PS this isnt ralphie calling its the average fan who knows how inferior sports teams do business!!
