NHL Approves Realignment

The NHL announced it has approved a realignment plan that will shift the league to four divisions beginning next season. The board of governors approved the move today that will send the Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings to the Eastern Conference and the Winnipeg Jets to the West.

The Sabres' division will include the Red Wings, , Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators.

The other East division has Columbus, Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, New Jersey Devils, Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers and New York Islanders

The two Western Conferences will include one with Winnipeg, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators and St. Louis Blues

And the other with the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, Phoenix Coyotes, San Jose Sharks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks

The divisions have not been named yet. The league will re-evaluate the divisions after the 2015-16 season.

Swap Out
They should swap Florida & Tampa for Columbus and Pittburgh--creates more of regional rivals
03/14/2013 1:33PM
So.... wait, are we screwed??
Why are there two more teams in the east than the west??
03/14/2013 3:37PM
Why
Why the Fla teams in our division? Why not in the "Southern" division. Why not the town NY teams to our division?

Realignment
Now that we know about the realignment, there should be one issue, and that's on the Phoenix Coyotes. Let's say that the Coyotes are relocated in the near future and they go to the East like Quebec City, what could happen?

NHL Divisions
why 16 teams in the east and only 14 in the west? I can see Columbus in the east but NOT Detroit. I'm sorry Michigan is a midwest state. it's going to be tougher to make the playoffs in the east with 16 trams competing for 8 spots.

Buffalo is getting less and less interested by the day in NHL and Sabres
Perennial bottom dweller the Sabres, who cares which teams are in the division. This team deserves to go bankrupt.
03/14/2013 7:28PM
WOW
The Sabres will never ever make the playoffs.

One thing I like is divisions matter
Divisions actually matter in this new realignment. Right now, I don't care who is in my division. I look at the CONFERENCE standings to see how the Sabres might make the playoffs. In the new alignment, we need to be the top 3 in our division. If we aren't, then we look at points for just the final 2 teams, not the final 5 teams.

Coyotes, Quebec and expansion
Ok, some thoughts, at the very least Columbus should have come to Buffalo's division and split the Florida teams, because they won't split NYR, NYI & NJ and they won't split PIT & PHI. Moving on from there questions about the Coyotes and expansion. Ideally when the Coyotes move the NHL will also expand by two teams. There are 3 locations more or less primed to become the next NHL franchises, these being Seattle, Quebec City and a second team in Toronto. If that happens either the yotes go to Seattle or their move is offset by an expansion team there. The rest of the league would need to be re-aligned again with 2 teams heading back west, with Colorado likely joining the West Coast and which ever two go West (Detroit and Columbus again?) being part of the MidWest. Assuming Toronto and Quebec City are the expansion, the Sabres division would get both and the 2 Florida teams go to the Southeast division. Assuming all that happens this would make the most sense

2 things:
1) They should have left every thing alone, and just swapped out Nashville and Winnipeg. 2) The Sabres, as constructed right now, will be hard-pressed to make the playoffs. It's one thing to fight for spots against Bos, Ott, Mtl & Tor (and, face facts, the latter two are good now), but adding in Det? We are in deep trouble unless they make some changes to this roster. I'm talking to you Mr. Pegula, Mr. Black and Mr. Regier.

Denial
The Sabres' brass are in denial if they think their team is good enough to compete in this new format. Pegula, Black and Regier better make some changes, or we're going to be on the outside looking in. Year-to-year, Boston and Detroit are usually a lock, and with the resurgence of Ott, Mtl and Tor? Look out below. Not good.

oh goody!
just what the sabres need, another team(detroit)to be behind in the standings.if my memory serves me right, the red wings have been in the postseason like 20 straight years?plus we have won like 1 or 2 times against them in a decade with 7 or 8 losses?detroit was probably in favor as soon as they saw buffalo included in their division!! buffalo also has tough time beating florida REMEMBER THAT SABRE FANS NEXT YEAR WHEN SABRES ARE HOME AGAIN FOR 2014 PLAYOFFS!!!
