Free Agency: What's still out there for Bills?

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- In to the third day of free agency, the Buffalo Bills have made only one move thus far while other teams have shown to be a bit more active.

When the Buffalo Bills signed linebacker Manny Lawson to a four-year deal, that crossed off one need in free agency from the list. As the names continue to get plucked from the market, the natural question from fans is simple:

Who's left that the Bills might be interested in? We'll take a position-by-position look at their needs and who might be of service, in terms of free agency. Keep in mind, this is totally separate from draft needs. One more thing, the 'If I had to guess' areas are not based on any intimate knowledge but rather an educated opinion on who might fit their needs.

Here we go:

Quarterback
Need: Another body to add to the roster that comes relatively cheap, but can provide another arm at training camp with some NFL experience.

Names out there: Matt Cassel, Kevin Kolb, Jason Campbell, Josh Johnson, Byron Leftwich, Brady Quinn, Matt Leinart, Rex Grossman, David Carr, Caleb Hanie

If I had to guess: Josh Johnson. He'll come cheap, has four years of NFL experience and would be a solid third string quarterback if the Bills only take one player at the position in April's draft.

Wide Receiver
Need: A second-tier wide receiver with some starting experience to come in and to either compete for the starting job opposite Stevie Johnson or to add depth for three and four wide receiver looks.

Names out there: Greg Jennings, Julian Edelman, Laurent Robinson, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Kevin Ogletree, Austin Collie, Brandon Gibson, Steve Breaston, Mohamed Massaquoi, Kevin Walter, Ramses Barden

If I had to guess: Mohamed Massaquoi. With 43 total starts and good size (6-foot-2, 207-pounds), Massaquoi could be that potential starting option that can be had for a low, low price.

Offensive Guard
Need: A starter, depth or both. With the loss of both Andy Levitre and Chad Rinehart, the left guard position needs to be addressed.

Names out there: Brandon Moore, Lance Louis, Willie Colon, Eben Britton, Jake Scott, Kevin Boothe

If I had to guess: Brandon Moore. At 32, he's a bit older but has an obvious connection with Bills head coach Doug Marrone. Moore started 30 games with the Jets while Marrone was the offensive line coach there. The position will still need a young player added to take over for Moore when his production starts to dip, but that may come through the draft.

Cornerback
Need: A player that can add both experience and depth that has some experience in the nickel, and that may even compete for the starting job oppposite Stephon Gilmore.

Names out there: Aqib Talib, Brent Grimes, Keenan Lewis, Nnamdi Asomugha, Antoine Winfield, Cary Williams, Brice McCain, E.J. Biggers, Mike Jenkins, Sheldon Brown, Tracy Porter, Antoine Cason

If I had to guess: Brice McCain. The Bills are in need of a cornerback to potentially take over at nickel, and McCain could be that player. Both Leodis McKelvin and Justin Rogers struggled while covering the slot, and while Ron Brooks is still on the roster, he's quite unproven.

Safety
Need: A veteran strong safety that can assist Da'Norris Searcy in his development, push him for a starting job and provide some insight in to the new defense.

Names out there: Bernard Pollard, Charles Woodson, Quintin Mikell, Kenny Phillips, Adrian Wilson, Jim Leonhard, Eric Smith, Tom Zbikowski

If I had to guess: Jim Leonhard. A former starter for Mike Pettine who understands the defense, will come at a low price, is familiar with the area and organization and can provide solid special teams play. He also worked out for the Bills during last year's training camp before signing with Denver.

The Bills might also go after a third-string running back and fullback in free agency, but could also find both of those either in the draft or in undrafted free agency.

Get Pollard !
If nothing else than being a patriot Killer, he'd make a huge impact in a needed position. btw, good article. Keep on doing what you do.
03/14/2013 2:57PM
Joe's "TARGETS"... all MISSES...
So far, After listing every free agent available in the free world as Bills' "targets", he hasn't gotten one right yet! No surprise here though just more Typical uninformed WGR representation. Let's call him "THE JUNIOR PAUL HAMILTON"! Ridiculous!! Go back to writing articles for your high school paper.
03/14/2013 3:03PM
Joe's too funny... IF I HAD TO GUESS.. MARK KELLLLLL-SOE!!!
Can't cover, can't run; can't hit; can't tackle; FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA; UNDERSTANDS THE DEFENSE; WAS NOT SIGNED HERE LAST YEAR; MARK KELSOE? JIM LEONHARD? Jon CORTO? Go write for your high school paper!!! Foreverfor Extend Regeir!!!
03/14/2013 3:11PM
Dansby
Sign him...inside LB, 120 tackles last year. Team leader.
03/14/2013 3:14PM
SAD!
Just looking at what's left this is sad. Here we go with another 2-3 years of rebuilding. I guess its safe to say the Nix era was like the rest before him. The Bills are the laughing stock of the league and rightfully so. We have fans actually speaking of drafting a QB in the 2nd/3rd round that is similar to Fitzpatrick (Nassib) all because he was coached by Marrone. So at the end of 3 seasons when Marrone gets fired will Nassib go with him? If so, another waste of pick. Its like we keep going in circles with the Bills. 13 seasons, 13!!!
03/14/2013 3:25PM
if i had to guess....
the bills won't do a darn thing.. except continuing the tradition of losing
03/14/2013 3:42PM
Are you serious
Worst organization EVER!!!
03/14/2013 3:43PM
TE & LB
How about TE and LB?
03/14/2013 3:46PM
think outside the box
just cause someone played for Pettine in the past doesn't mean he'll be considered.
03/14/2013 4:03PM
Wish list
This is all fine and good but they all seem to be sleeping at One Bills Drive. Lots of players moving and not a word to be heard from the new group with no restrictions.
03/14/2013 4:09PM
ON THE CHEAP
Why is it with the Bills we always have to add comments like, "he'll come cheap" or " at a low, low price"?
03/14/2013 4:09PM
lb help
what about linebacker help. Manny Lawson is not the answer to solidify the lb's position. You didn't name anyone like Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, or a James Harrison etc... Bills have a great need at this position as well. Who would you like to see here???
03/14/2013 4:14PM
Where are the Linebackers?
Our biggest need besides QB.....
03/14/2013 4:23PM
Low Price
Why does everything need to come at a low price for the bills to pick up? Don't we have the space to make a bigger splash?
03/14/2013 4:23PM
Bernard Pollard
To not pursue Bernand Pollard would be asinine
03/14/2013 4:38PM
Solid and Senseable Breakdown
You continue you to impress me Joe.
03/14/2013 4:53PM
If only they would go for some of these guys
Just Lawson isn't good enough
03/14/2013 5:18PM
Doesn't matter who's left
Doesn't matter who's left...the bills are too incompetent to get anybody of value...and nobody of value will want to sign with buffalo because they don't want to be associated with an incompetent organization.
03/14/2013 5:25PM
ILB?
I mean, seriously? We need someone inside bad.
03/14/2013 5:50PM
Let's Get Excited
Boy, a lot to get excited about with those predictions! As bad as this team has been the past 10 years, I have a hard time remembering having this many holes. Our depth is going to be absolutley brutal nevermind having so many questionble starters. The drive to the #1 2014 pick is on!
03/14/2013 6:05PM
???
Basically u just told us nothing!! Waste of reading!!
03/14/2013 6:06PM
onions....
Zzzzzzzzzzz
03/14/2013 6:23PM
If I had to Guess....
Sounds like "won't cost a lot" is the lead factor in these signings. Don't the Bills have something like $20 million available under the cap, even after the frugal Lawson contract signing? Eevn if you pencil in $7 million for draft picks (a very generous estimate) that leaves $13 million on this year's cap...enough for some serious spending. C'mon Russ, you told us no restrictions, right? So where's the other LB, SS, OG, TE, and WR. Do they all have to be dollar store buys? Jim Leonhard? Brandon Moore Brice McCain? Are these upgrades over Wilson, Rhinehart and Rogers? If I had to guess I would bet on another washout season. But then to Buddy's way of annual thinking if the bar is set low enough you can't miss expectations by much. Send this guy to the backporch with a toothpick and a big bag of chew and get serious about improving this roster Brandon.
03/14/2013 6:57PM
Free Agents
The question is who wants to come to Buffalo,a team without a QB. All the other teams with new coaches have added free agents to improve their team such as KC,Phil,Denver,Cle,etc.Where is the forward thing and aggessiveness that Russ Brandon talked about.Actions speak louder than words. We don't hear anthing from Nix other than admitting it a bad year to get a QB.
03/14/2013 9:21PM
Why always cheap players are we out of money or just being Ralphed again??
Whay are we always talking about getting players on teh cheap, we don;t have a great number of draft choices to fill the holes with quality players. I believe our new wizz kids are ibn way over their heads. I also believe the Buddy Nix should have been our first release after the season. Also you did not mention the need for a Tight End, that seems like our greates need.
03/14/2013 10:24PM
All I hear is crickets in Buffalo
I was excited about the new blood running the Bills. But I got to say that I'm shocked with the very low interest in lets say ANYBODY!!!!! Did we win the Superbowl last year and I just don't remember. I know its tough to get the top free agents in when your starting over but I would like to hear the Bills mention with anyone or act interested in someone. I hope this isn't the same old Bills
03/15/2013 1:14AM
bernard pollard
and leonard good pickups
03/15/2013 2:02AM
What about restricted free agents?
One definitely comes to mind the Bills should go for... WR Danario Alexander. Aside from the injuries, which he put past him last year, he is an amazing WR and Chargers only assigned a original pick tender, which we wouldn't have to gave anything! Danario was originally undrafted, which means we wouldn't risk anything to sign him to an offer sheet. He's only 24 still. The 9 game stretch he had in 2012 was amazing.
03/15/2013 7:17AM
Opinions
Thanks for your opinions Joe. Most the guys and gals yelling here are fair weather fans. Nice Job giving out your opinions on what they should or might do. Keep doing what you do, Its much appreciated. All you grumpy fair weather fans, Go find another team.
03/15/2013 7:47AM
No Wonders
To me its an easy fix. Sign Pollard/Huff, Winfield, Heyward Bey, Veteran OG, Dansby. Draft Geno Smith, Eifert/Ertz and some LB depth. That really isnt a lot. You would have an above average secondary, solid LB core, Offense would be good. Doesnt seem that hard. Vote for me to be the next Bills GM. Joe, keep doing good work. I love reading everything you do and you obviously care a lot and put a lot of effort into it. Keep it up.
03/15/2013 8:43AM
Joe is another on the cheap jackazzz supporter
WGR loves below mediocrity is the best way to describe it. The Howard Simon show sucks too when Howard is not there. The nerd White and the nitwit Fisher are out of control morons.
03/15/2013 8:51AM
Hate
I hate the bills
03/15/2013 9:13AM
Lets get competitive
Sign Aqib Talib. He can be elite and his signing would force Billy to scramble for a CB. Brandon Moore? Wasn't he involved in the "rear end Fumble"? Get the youngest guard out there, one that may still have some upside. Listen to Stevie, get Hayward-Bey.
03/15/2013 9:21AM
Lots of good players out there Buddy
COME ON YOU IDIOT...START GETTING SOME OF THESE GUYS!!! I WANT A WINNING FOOTBALL TEAM!!! NONE OF JOE'S GUESSES PLEASE. They are all mediocre. Hint: Mallet of the Pat's wants a starting job and Buffalo is the purrrrrrrrfict fit.
03/15/2013 10:55AM
What's still out there for the Bills?
A Lot!!! Want to make the playoffs??? That's simple enough.
03/15/2013 11:08AM
Thanks Joe ...
Even though your picks are bunk, keep writing these articles. It's better than listening to the WGR misfits on the radio. Let's see ... Rambling Joe who stumbles on every sentence ... Schopp who insults the callers ... Bulldog who talks like he has marbles in his mouth ... Howard who constantly coughs and clears his throat in the microphone ... Paul who the station claims to be the local hockey expert and sounds like a moron ... Jeremy who needs his diaper changed. It's time to put you folks out to pasture, like the Bills are doing with their grey beards and let some honest and hard working folks with valid opinions like Sal and Matt start runnung the show. Thanks, I feel better now. Go Bills and Sabres !!!
03/15/2013 12:15PM
Enough with the garbage picking
13 years of no play-offs and we still garbage pick. Why are all the likely scenerios the "low cost" option. I can't stand it anymore.
03/15/2013 2:01PM
loosing ground
each team in the division is improving. Get moving Bills. Another last place in the division in 2013/14
03/15/2013 3:00PM
SEBASTIAN VOLLMER??
WHAT ARE THE BILLS WAITING FOR??? WE COULDN'T USE THIS GUY? HE'S BETTER THAN ANYONE ON THE LINE NOW. I DON'T GET IT. MAKE AN OFFER!!
03/15/2013 3:23PM
1-15
I was originally thinking 2-14 next year but now I am leaning towards 1-15.
03/15/2013 5:59PM
Sorry We're Closed
Does anyone else get this feeling that the Bills Front Office is OTL.....Every other team is being re-active and the Bills are sitting on their hands...1 F/A signing, snd is that because Lawson didn't know about the Bills failures for the past 13 yrs...come on aready what are U personnel people @ 1 Bills Drive waiting for...Dingus Day? Why are they waiting for the left overs? Oh wait....they'll address ALL their NEEDS in the draft.....Wrong! How frustating. Don't sign a new stadium lease, let them leave
03/15/2013 7:11PM
The chaos within the organization doesn't attract notable players....
The Deadspin.com phone tapping just goes to show what a goober Buddy Nix is. No GM in the NFL wants to do a deal with a guy they cannot trust. Along with the Bills, Nix is a laughing-stock. Players do not want to come here. They see the writing on the wall. If the owner/president of the Bills won't spend money on getting a decent head coach in here, what makes fans think that the Bills will go after a high-priced/high producing talent that's out there in free agency? This organization is a mess. If you are that fan that thought the Bills would go after one of these talents, you are living a pipe-dream. Get used to more re-building folks.
03/16/2013 12:33AM
Get Your Popcorn Ready
I feel the same as most of you. However it is becoming clear to me that what we have here is the beginning of Russ's idea of "MONEY BALL". If not, then we are just setting the stage for the first pick in '14.Maybe both? Really hope I'm wrong.
03/16/2013 3:03AM
Penny pinching!!!!!!
I agree with cutting Fitz! but, what is your plan, going forward? The organization looks cheap!! Why would a FA come here? you have lost 8 or 9 guys on a BAD football team and replaced with 1 underachiver in Lawson?!?! What about WR, ILB, TE, OG, S, etc... I have season tickets and its almost time to give up. They are NOT trying to win, just want to make money. Wake up Bills fans... They do not care about you!!!
03/16/2013 5:42AM
Bumsfan
Joe I feel sorry for you in that you cover this sorry team. You must write these articles with tongue in cheek. I hope you fine meaningful employment in a city that actually has an NFL team and not a farm team for the rest of the league like the Bills.
03/16/2013 12:40PM
It's all about...
BEING RELEVANT !!! The Bills have said for years that they like to "fly under the radar" as far as people on Sports TV talking about them...in other words , they don't like ESPN or NFL Network talking them up, or down. That ain't the way it works in todays NFL guys. You have to be hyped to keep your fan base interested and the Bills prefer the old skool way of doing business...VERY BAD
03/16/2013 1:48PM
alarm clock
did buddy forget to set his alarm clock?? are we talking to any free agents at all? im confused we have so many holes to fill and we only have 6 draft picks this year. come on bills lets go
03/16/2013 4:51PM
RE: Thanks Joe ...
About the radio personalities. Rambling Joe does not stumble. He is one of the better listens on the station and rather articulate in his unscripted answers to questions. Schopp insults everybody, not just the listeners. Put yourself in his shoes, a perfect person in an imperfect world. Bulldog is the stumbler when speaking. He took a call when schopp was on vacation, and caller did a perfect imitation of the bulldog speaking. Even though bulldog did not say so, he knew it was like listening to himself speak. Howard should take up smoking so he has an excuse for having so much flem in his throat. Paul does a lot of talking but never says anything. Jeremy will be great someday if he ever matures.
03/16/2013 6:32PM
Addressing Guard
I think the Bills really need to consider the flexability Cordy Glenn gives them in adressing the new holes in the O-line. I mean if there is some great Left Tackle prospect that has fallen through the cracks to our second round pick I think we should take him and move Cordy back to guard, his original position in college. Cordy is working out well at LT, but I think a great LT with him playing Guard would make our line solid. That way you don't have to overpay for lineman in free agency, and spend that money on other needs like WR.
03/16/2013 7:57PM
Additions
Heyward-Bey at WR and Pollard at Safety would be nice additions!! No idea what Nix is waiting on, maybe his Mickey Mouse alarm to ring??
03/16/2013 8:29PM
Typical
Inaction and poor decisions when forced to do it. Jones will haunt whatever second/third rate CB/LB or safety we end up with. We do not rebuild , we continue a consistency of incompetence. God I hate this team.
03/16/2013 10:22PM
Addressing Guard (continued)
The whole reson i'm suggesting this approach (drafting a LT in the 2nd)is that it would give us depth at the hardest postion on the O-line. This way if the LT we draft gets injured, we can shift Cordy back to LT and use a depth Guard. It would be anice security blanket to have, many O-lines have struggled when losing their starting LT (ask an Eagles fan).
03/18/2013 12:19PM
Buddy's Time has Come
The conventional wisdom has been that Nix has done a good job "stocking the roster." it's been said more than once that the roster is in better shape than when he got here. Really? We have more holes this offseason than I can remember in some time and that's saying something! In addition to the missing pieces Joe mentioned let's not forget tight end as Chandler was hurt late in the year and probably won't be ready for the start of the season. Does anyone trust Nix to handle drafting a QB? He watched Kaepernik in college and decided to draft Aaron Wiliams instead. He watched Russell Wilson in college and traded up in the third round for TJ Graham instead. Headed for year 14. Way to go, Bills.
03/18/2013 12:42PM
HEY ALL FANS...
I JUST CAME UP WITH OUR NEW FOOTBALL NAME!!! HERE COME YOUR BUFFALO BARGAIN BASEMENT BILLS !!! SEASON TICKETS ON SALE NOW!!!! WHOPPEE!!
03/18/2013 2:58PM
WHAT'S OUT THERE FOR BILLS
T.J. PERRYWINKLE, TED BINEKER,JOSE PINELLA, GUY TIMBERLINE, MIKE GOGUS, EDDIE ISKABUBBLE, ROLF BENDERSON, SHAWNE CROSS, WEE DU POW, FELIX NOSS, QUENTEN HIGHTOWER, PETE HUMBERG, MORRIS FLETCHER, WILLIAM CASHMIER, TODD GOODFELLOW, GET THE HINT: ALL NO-NAMES, THAT'S WHAT SEEMS TO BE THE GOING RATE FOR THIS TEAM
03/18/2013 3:47PM
Barkley may be a bust
Rather pick up Kevin Kolb,, cost less and if protected might be a winner
03/18/2013 7:03PM
TIM TEBOW!
Go get him, he wont cost a lot of money.
03/19/2013 3:23PM
TE
hey Joe, love your work, but how about a Tight End? And another Line Backer?
03/20/2013 1:52AM
Come on... TE and ILB are also top priority needs.
Teams that understand hybrid defenses and run balanced offenses know what I'm talking about. If Marrone is really an OL expert he must know that a top TE is a tremendous weapon for his coming franchise QB and game plan. On the other hand Pettine's biggest need should be ILB. Hybrid defenses starts from the middle...
