Senators Trip Up Sabres 4-3

Kyle Turris scored two goals and Ben Bishop made 33 saves, leading the Ottawa Senators to a come-from-behind win over the Sabres on Saturday 4-3 in overtime. Drew Stafford had a pair of goals in the loss for Buffalo.

Mike Weber staked the Sabres to a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season. Ville Leino, playing in his first game of the season, worked the puck back to the blue line where Weber hesitated and  wristed a shot that found the back of the Ottawa net. Buffalo went up 2-0 later in the first when Drew Stafford, crashing the net, poked a big Nathan Gerbe rebound past Bishop. Moments later, both Gerbe and Chris Neil ended up in the penalty box after briefly mixing it up following a faceoff.

Patrick Wiercioch cut the Sabres' lead in half 4:03 into the second with his 4th of the season. A turnover in the Buffalo zone allowed the Senators to keep pressure on Miller, with the puck ultimately ending up in the net off Wiercioch's stick. Chris Phillips tied the score near the midway point of the second period, letting a shot go immediately after a faceoff to the left of Miller. The puck appeared to deflect off Jordan Leopold's glove and fluttered over the Buffalo netminder to make it a 2-2 game.

With just a little over one minute remaining in the second period, Ottawa went up 3-2 on Turris' wraparound attempt. The Senators' forward swept behind the Buffalo net and stuffed the puck between the post and Miller's right pad. Stafford's second goal of the day tied it at 12:06 of the third period. Stafford picked up the loose puck near the right faceoff circle, flung it toward Bishop and beat the Ottawa netminder to pull Buffalo even at 3-3.

Turris ended it at 3:54 of overtime, blasting a one-time shot over Miller's shoulder and under the crossbar from the right faceoff circle. Buffalo's power play struggles continued against Ottawa, going 0 for 3.

The Sabres return to action tomorrow evening against the Capitals. Buffalo heads to Washington for a 7 p.m. faceoff. Hear the call on WGR 550 and the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network.

Erhoff is "untouchable" right Darcy ?
Every team in the NHL must get their comic relief from the Sabres with our buddy Darcy at the wheel. Did someone forget to tell Vanek that there was a hockey game today ? He was putrid.
03/16/2013 6:28PM
Mister Softee Blows it again up 2-0
The hot goalie rode the bench again. Enroth looking into the sky during a camera pan, of course, ON THE BENCH. Post game show...Hamilton sucked too as usual. Nothing gets blamed on Miller. Two bad goals again gets un noticed by the shill brigade. Get ridof Mister Softee...PALEEEEEEEASSSE! Give the beat reporters job to Jerry Sullivan. He'd be tough as nails and FIRE REGEIR!!!
03/16/2013 6:34PM
Fire Paul Hamilton
I had enough of this Regier lover. Hamilton is a joke!!! Get to the real problem here...Miller. He must get traded ASAP.
03/16/2013 6:38PM
Just a few more years of this. It's not so bad
Current management will realize that the team is playing bad in a few years and they will make the necessary changes to improve this team (See: Ruff firing). Calm down everyone. Be patient. This isn't xbox.
03/16/2013 6:38PM
hahaha
keeping spending on nhl garbage. stop whining about something you already know.
03/16/2013 6:40PM
Lindy's probably to nice a guy
to laugh at this fiasco.
03/16/2013 6:46PM
Yuck
If they can't find a way to score on the power play, expect a very long and painful end to this season. Clearly they are not going to the playoffs so it's time to stop playing Hecht so much. Let some young guns come in and see what happens. I think we need a new GM and possibly a new coach.
03/16/2013 6:49PM
Sabres game = Night-off for the opponents #1 goalie
The butterknives suffer the insult well.
03/16/2013 7:03PM
PP
I am begging you please change the power play!! Get Pomminville off the point. It hasn't worked the entire season why are you still trying it. Everyone is waiting for the one timer by Pominville. It is really sad that the two best players currently on this team are the guy that cam from the AHL. I have said it before and still maintain this team will never win when you have a guy like Erhoff getting huge minutes. He is a defensive nightmare and does not contribute enough offensively unless you consider missing the net 10 times a game offense. Also how can a guy like Pominville who makes as many poor decisions as he does with the puck be your captain? Sell what you can and start over including Miller. A goalie of his caliber should not get beat on that wraparound all though Hecht standing there watching did not help him any.
03/16/2013 7:04PM
what else is new
same boring team, same mistakes over and over again
03/16/2013 7:37PM
Pick Any "S" Word
And I don't mean "Sabres". This team (what does the Rangers say about his team), oh yea, (suck), or how about (soft), or (sloppy), or just(shirkers-once Ottawa started throwing around their weight in the 2d Period-Sabres shirked from playing like they did in the 1st Period). Even Brian Duff can see what any Sabres fan can see - they take off either "whole periods" or "they relax and only play 18 or 19 minutes per period". Watching them play still reminds me that Lindy Ruff was not the problem!
03/16/2013 9:08PM
Miller
Played just like the team in front of him. Fantastic in the first with several huge saves, and worse as the game went on. The O.T. goal he has to stop. It was a very poor save selection. Yes the shot was perfect; however, it was short side, and from a very bad angle. He needs to make the stop.
03/16/2013 9:09PM
president
NOTHING TO SAY ANY MORE
03/16/2013 9:55PM
Briliant ...
Now if these bums can keep playing as inept as they are maybe we can get a get a shot at a top draft pick like Jonathan Drouin or Elias Lindholm. Oh wait ... why wish Hockey Heaven on those poor youngsters. Let them go to a team that will develop and utilize their skills instead of slapping them on the 4th line and then send back to the minors when they don't score.
03/16/2013 10:09PM
What?
why didn't Enroth start? let him see if he can get another win? what do the Sabres have to lose? why so conservative now? they send back the Russian?- trade away a young D man with potential? - the third line of Amerks looks good -I know they can't win with too many rookies BUT I'd rather lose with rookies with a future to improve instead of a bunch of players who have their money and play like bums? SHAKE IT UP DARCY!!!
03/16/2013 10:18PM
coaches change
rolston is a big upgrade in place of ruff.they make a big mistake letting ruff go.
03/16/2013 10:22PM
rolston
we should fire darcy and brigning back lindy.the team as the same problem.people said that lindy was to tough on the players now they gonna said rolston is too soft.lindy was hard because they have no heart no passion there too soft.pegula bring back lindy with dudley.people star chanting brick back lindy inside they arena.
03/16/2013 10:30PM
Darcys Boy Jochen
Reeeeeal strong play on that 3rd Ottawa goal. Next time buy a ticket if your gonna stand around and watch.
03/16/2013 10:31PM
Homers
Stafford the 1st star??? Really? Dont worry he will disappear for 12 games now in typical fashion. Turris deserved 1st star you homers, and Im a Buffalownian
03/16/2013 10:36PM
The Invisible Captain
0G, 0A, -1. Thanks for showing up today. What a leader. Rink curls aint gonna win you anything Pommer. But keep that jersey tucked in the girls love it you turd. Weakest captain ever in Sabres history. Keep your eye on that Lady Bing Pommer youre a shoe-in!!
03/16/2013 10:42PM
See ya Darcy
How can this team be this bad.
03/16/2013 10:44PM
16 years
Start building a team that reflects this city. Being considered little isn't anything to be proud of. The Sabres have turned into the Islanders or the Panthers. Just a soft, boring, milk toast hockey team that is uninteresting to watch and hard to root for. I think Shopp said it best on Friday, you don't get a call from the Sabres unless you are hard to play against. Going forward that should be the standard.
03/16/2013 11:20PM
I liked the humpty dumpty days better
It was a lot easier when Black made injury excuses for this joke of a team. I'm wondering if Darcy can pull off a 5th round pick in trade for Pominville and Stafford. If he does, he'll get a contract extension - at least if he works for thisteam he will.
03/17/2013 12:01AM
Well-written!
This is an excellent article. I really enjoyed the detail stats at the end. I wasn't able to watch the game, but I know I can always depend on Dan Cave to keep me informed. Thanks again for a great recap, WGR!
03/17/2013 1:15AM
THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING GOALIE EMBARRASSES!!! MR SOFTEE MUST GO!!!!
WOW!! MR SOFTEE absolutely has to be REMOVED from this franchise. These ELITE MELTDOWNS have gone on far enough! It is now obvious this guy's a cancer and playing like it. He's mentally not motivated or competent to be the future at WALMART any longer. Trade this quitter NOW for whatever they can get... EXTENDIUM REGEIRIUM ELITENESS MY AZZZ fffOrRRREEEE VR4!!!
03/17/2013 1:16AM
Hello.....
MR. SOFTEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!
03/17/2013 5:47AM
Look Better BUT...
The Sabres do look better, they still are not playoff caliber. With all the rest they got and time to better their game and they still couldn't beat Ottawa at home? Way too much passing in the offensive zone. Get the puck to the net!!! Still see a soft team. Need some tougher player in the lineup. When the playoffs arrive you better bring some toughness, which the Sabres don't have. Oh well, another year without playoffs.
03/17/2013 6:11AM
MILLER costs team again
"The bouncer (over a standing goalie)" , "The wrap around" and last but not least "The top shelf" (because as usual Miller went down and failed to stay standing up and square up the shooter) This team deserved a betterfate but has already "Checked out" Thanks Ryan
03/17/2013 6:53AM
who to blame next
Well, we tried the coach and it doesn't look like that's working. How about getting 2 new assistant coaches, a new goaltender coach and a new Captain next?
03/17/2013 7:19AM
I've seen enough
This team is pitiful, and the coach and players were all put here by the failure of a GM we have watched fail for how many years now? Pefect time to start over with a new GM, and put the new GM in place before darcy has time to make any more of his terrible moves.
03/17/2013 8:40AM
???
What's the point
03/17/2013 9:12AM
Two sports teams
that arent worth s*it let both of these embarassing a**holes leave
03/17/2013 9:23AM
Any big trades yet???
Whattaaa yaaaa waaaaaaiiiiiiting faaaaa????
03/17/2013 10:27AM
Begging!!!
Why is the best goalie in the NHL, just ask him he'll tell you, on his knees for virtually every goal against him??? He's beggin' to be traded.
03/17/2013 10:54AM
The Three Jockstraps of this game
1.) Miller 2.) Sekera 3.) Vanek
03/17/2013 12:28PM
Come on WGR... open the blogs
I'm sure there are reactions to another Miller melt down to the Senators. Let the fans speak!!! It's so dead around here. Has Darcy been fired yet???
03/17/2013 1:33PM
vanek
is the softest player i have ever seen. he should be wearing figure skates

UNBELIEVEABLE - Coming Up Short & Hoping for 8th
I have been a loyal sabres fan since 1971 and witnessed the sabres coming up short against the senators. A senators team that came in loaded with key injuries ready to be beat... and the sabres come up small again. There is a theme here...the roster still has too many undersized players and lacking enough bug gritty players that hate to lose. What you get are results like this... coming up a bit short in the end. This sabres team over the last couple years reminds me of the mid 80's sabres (Barasso = Miller, Andreychuck = Vanek, Housley = Erhoff, Ramsey = Regehr, Hartman = Kaleta, Ruff = Ott). Both teams come up short in critical moments and both teams lack true 1st line offensie forwards. The 80's sabres got knocked out by the Nords with Statsny and the Bruins w/ Neely etc - sound familiar? That didn't change until Mr. Lafontaine arrived (a first line talented & gritty forward) If you don't have 1st line forwards then you better have MANY big, gritty, nasty forwards that can outskate and outwork the other guys. The mid 80's and this edition were/are lacking enough of them. Dear Mr. Pegula and Black, I certainly hope you read and respond to Mr. Gleason's article in the sunday Buf News as it was spot on. I actually beat Bucky to the discussion about Brennan and Campbell comparison in a prior post here. Why obtain a fifth rounder for a second round guy who just needs a little more time at the NHL level (just like Grigorenk) & can help an awful powerplay...when is this regime going to realize that Pominville and his shot is and have been ineffective at the point for 4 years now. Shooting for 8th is not the goal here anymore. Why not let go some of the other non performers who did not and sometimes still do not show up or make a difference...Leopold, Hecht instead of Brennan? Leopold cost the sabres 3 games failing not to pick up open men in the slot in front of Miller. So thats okay? Myers cost them 4 games, but he is still young and should get a second chance, but not the old vets. Where has Vanishing Vanek been...he's not a first line forward. Don't you think 15 years of hoping for eighth decisions by Darcy are enough? Virtually everyone I spoke with does. Why trust him with any decisions. His history is there...Corkum, Moore, Gratton, Torres, Zubrus, and on and on. This borders on ridiculuous. The 99 team was primarily Muckler creation no Regier's. Until the sabres move in a different direction to bring in a GM with Stanley cup credentials (e.g maybe Dudley)...you will hear the boos and catcalls grow: "Darcy must go" and "42 years" (with no cup). A season ticket holder about to become ex. Congratulations to Bucky Gleason for hitting a bullseye.
