Kyle Turris scored two goals and Ben Bishop made 33 saves, leading the Ottawa Senators to a come-from-behind win over the Sabres on Saturday 4-3 in overtime. Drew Stafford had a pair of goals in the loss for Buffalo.
Mike Weber staked the Sabres to a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season. Ville Leino, playing in his first game of the season, worked the puck back to the blue line where Weber hesitated and wristed a shot that found the back of the Ottawa net. Buffalo went up 2-0 later in the first when Drew Stafford, crashing the net, poked a big Nathan Gerbe rebound past Bishop. Moments later, both Gerbe and Chris Neil ended up in the penalty box after briefly mixing it up following a faceoff.
Patrick Wiercioch cut the Sabres' lead in half 4:03 into the second with his 4th of the season. A turnover in the Buffalo zone allowed the Senators to keep pressure on Miller, with the puck ultimately ending up in the net off Wiercioch's stick. Chris Phillips tied the score near the midway point of the second period, letting a shot go immediately after a faceoff to the left of Miller. The puck appeared to deflect off Jordan Leopold's glove and fluttered over the Buffalo netminder to make it a 2-2 game.
With just a little over one minute remaining in the second period, Ottawa went up 3-2 on Turris' wraparound attempt. The Senators' forward swept behind the Buffalo net and stuffed the puck between the post and Miller's right pad. Stafford's second goal of the day tied it at 12:06 of the third period. Stafford picked up the loose puck near the right faceoff circle, flung it toward Bishop and beat the Ottawa netminder to pull Buffalo even at 3-3.
Turris ended it at 3:54 of overtime, blasting a one-time shot over Miller's shoulder and under the crossbar from the right faceoff circle. Buffalo's power play struggles continued against Ottawa, going 0 for 3.
The Sabres return to action tomorrow evening against the Capitals. Buffalo heads to Washington for a 7 p.m. faceoff. Hear the call on WGR 550 and the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network.
