Another troublesome second period was the difference in the Buffalo Sabres 5-3 loss to the Washington Capitals on Sunday night at Verizon Center.
It took Alex Ovechkin just nineteen seconds to get the Capitals on the scoreboard. The forward was able to wire a shot past Ryan Miller off of a clean face-off win for Washington. Buffalo would have one power play chance in the opening twenty minutes, but was not able to convert. The Caps held a 6-5 edge in shots in the period. Mark Pysyk logged 4:50 of ice time in his first NHL period of play. The rookie was called up due to an injury to Andrej Sekera.
Cody Hodgson answered for the Sabres just tweleve seconds into the middle stanza. The centerman's shot beat Brayden Holtby through the pads to tie the game at 1-1. However, with Tyler Myers in the penalty box the Capitals were able to re-take the lead. Troy Brouwer gave the home team a 2-1 lead with his tenth goal of the season. A pair of goals less than a minute apart upped the Caps' lead to 4-1 in the period. First, Jason Chimera scoerd his first goal of the season, and then forty-three seconds later Marcus Johansson gave Washington a three-goal lead.
Brian Flynn's third goal in a Buffalo uniform brought the blue and gold back within two goals. The goal made the score 4-2 in favor of Washington.
There was a lenghty delay before the start of the third period due to an issue with the lighting inside of the Verizon Center. The building lights did not immediately come back on fully after the intermission break, and it delayed the start of the final stanza by about five minutes.
Hodgson's second goal of the night came on a power play chance to bring the Sabres within a goal in the third. Tyler Ennis and Jason Pominville assisted on the goal that made the score 4-3 Washington. Pysyk was caught in the middle of a Mathieu Perreault odd-man chance for the Capitals that ended up in the Buffalo net. Perreault danced through the middle of the ice, beating the rookie on the play and upping the lead to 5-3.

UNBELIEVABLE - Wilting on the Road...Coming Up Short Again
I have been a loyal sabres fan since 1971...watching the caps game, its really nice to see so many sabres players giving up on plays while Kaleta, who pours his heart and soul into this team rides the pine. Shame In a span of 5 minutes I see Hecht giving up in the corner and him and Pominville caught napping on plays in front of Miller resulting in goals. on Darcy and Rolston. They stop skating too often...is this a conditioning issue or a will and determination issue? I think it is the latter and is a reflection on Mr. Regier's talent evaluation skills. Dear Mr. Black and Pegula, I certainly hope that you read Mr. Gleason's article in the sunday Buffalo News as me and many others agree it is spot on. How many more undersize players is this team going to accumulate? After losing Roy we get Porter and Flynn. Honest effort guys but too often outsized and outreached for the puck. Gerbe and Flynn deserve to be in the line up in front of Kaleta??? Or how about vanishing Vanek now that the going is getting tough? This team is awful at puck retrieval and holding possession in the off. zone.. I can count seven players that are terrible at puck retrieval in the ozone: gerbe, ennis, hecht, pominville, vanek (yes he is terrible on the boards), flynn, porter. Defensemen tha tcan't win battles in the corners (Leopod, Regier, Weber, and Myers until recently). And lets not forget the nhl draft a few years ago, where Regier in an interview at the draft indicated they had an opportunity to trade up to draft P. Kane, but felt the price was too high (a #1 draft pick and a "top" line player believed to be Afinoganov) and Kane might not be able to handle the pressure of performing in front of his hometown...UNBELIEVABLE, that is the title of my post. What world is Mr. Regier on? The list grows longer each year. Until there is a change in the GM you will hear the boos and catcalls at the arena continue to grow: "Darcy must go" and "42 years" (without the cup).

Loose Leopold and get McNabb up here to play with Pysyk. They are the future and I would like to give them some more experience to prepare them for next season. This season is over. Regier needs to go to work. Start selling. If he doesn't makethe proper changes, his job should be on the line. Dudley is sounding better and better. If this team doesn't show some more improvement, I don't think Rolsten will be up here next season.

The Fan's Plan
If anyone needed further proof its time to clean house this weekend should have taken care of that. Picking up at least3 of 4 desperately needed points not only proved out of reach for the boys, it became impossible with a pair of half hearted efforts in losses to both Ottawa (OT...but still a loss) and Washington. Major changes are needed all around to infuse some jump and badly needed talent to this lifeless roster. Let's start in net where it looks like Miller is too distarcted, depressed, disappointed...pick your adjective....to be the stopper we once knew, or need, here. He could bring some value and should be moved if possible at the deadline when his value is likely highest. On D, trading Regher and Leopold shouldn't just be considered, it should be mandated by Ted Black and if Darcy can't pull the trigger it should be pulled on him immediately. They aren't the future here so time to let them go, call up the kids and let both Pysk and McNabb finish the season on the varsity. If a serious offer comes for Sekera that's a bonus. He's just too brittle to be counted on for a full season. Start next year with Myers (who hopefully can be rebuilt), Erhoff, Weber, Pysk, McNabb and whomever you pick up via trade or FA. Up front say sayonara to Hecht via trade, waivers or simply not renewing his deal. Gerbe should be made available, via trade or waivers and be glad simply to shed the $1.8 mil he counts against the cap next year. Better players can be found for half the price. Nice guy but too small with not enough talent to overcome the handicap. Say adios to Kaleta who simply has too little to offer except the agitation factor and is another injury prone player as well. Fans wanting him to stay will say he gets hurt because he plays hard but so does Steve Ott and he is able to stay in the lineup for the teams he plays for. Kaleta historically is good for 50 games a year, max, and five goals. Corey Tropp can give you more, for less $ and trips to the principal's office. Stafford, of course, is on the hit list as his time here is done, period. No more excuses for this poster boy for everything that has gone downhill with this franchise. Love having his 4 million to do something, anything, else with. If some team can resussitate his career, ah salute. Next is Pommenville. Too soft to be a captain his lack of anger, emotion, passion...whatever it is that never comes across when this guy is interviewed is another example of the faint pulse of this team. His departure will be the biggest wake up call to the rest of the bananas staying behind that being ok with a half hearted effort each night doesn't cut it any more. Plus, you get back over $5 million off the payroll. Buy out Leino and his $4.5 million bid adieu to John Scott and the clean out is complete. So up front you keep for next year; Vanek, Hodgson, Ennis, Foligno, Ott, Grigorenko, Tropp, Flynn. That's eight so you need five or six more, some of whom may come via trade imports from what you sent out, FA or the likes of Porter, Armia, Girgensons, etc. You have taken approximately $27.5 million off a current payroll of roughly $70 million. With the cap going down to $64.5 next year you have about $21 million to spend, and 13 rostered players, so you need to add ten bodies. 2 goalies (assuming you want to upgrade over Enroth), 2 defenseman, 6 forwards. The budget could look like this; Goalies (2)- starter $3.5M, backup $750K, Defense (2)- $5m for both, Forwards (6)- 2 @ a total of $1.2m (4th liners), 2 @ a total of $4.0m (3rd liners), 1 @ $3.5m (2nd line), 1 @ $5m (1st line). Add it up and its a shade under $18m so you have a little cushion, more if you spend a bit more frugally which you will if you decide to get younger than what I have sketched here. Point is, its doable, it allows you to go out and get talent and, most importantly, gives the team the required makeover so desperately needed by the organization and begged for by the fans. I mean, do you even want to root for this bunch any longer? Oh, I saved the best for last. Darcy gets whacked ten seconds after the final horn on April 25th and a new boss is brought in to orchestrate the makeover, hire the coach and make the 4th pick in the 2013 NHL draft. Least that Pegula can do for making us watch the same car accident over and over again this year.

Miller makes a few great saves and lets in so many soft goals...Vanek skates in circles and hits no one, Pommenville, hit him once in the first period and he disappears, Stafford cannot shoot any more and why in the world is Hecht playing? Linde took the hit for a franchise that over the last 10 years has not provided him with the talent to be competative. A few players carried the load, and free agents were grossly over paid. Many of the current players were overpaid, Myers stands out as one, Stafford another. I do not know what you can do other than take the hit and start over. Terry is just going to have to start running this club like a business and forget the sentiment. If he doesn't there will be no one in attendance. The fans know what the deal is, question is whether Terry and Ted do.

Interesting that Pysyk played and Kaleta didn't.
I don't care if SUCKera is hurt, his presense or absense makes no difference in the Sabres' line-up. But I'm certain it's a pure coincidence that Pysyk was called up, literally, ONE day after the guy the Sabres wanted to draft- Jarred Tinordi-played his first game with the Canadiens. Of course the geniuses at WGR will try to act like Regier is being pro-active when, in fact, he's merely saving the embarassment of watching the player he wanted play for another team. Enough is enough. Get Miller out of here. He just gets worse with every game played. Both games over the weekend his goaltending sucked and got beat by two goalies I never heard of. Enroth beat the Rangers the other day and should have kept playing till he lost. Just another coach that can't handle goalies. What a joke!!! Millers post game was annoying yesterday. Sabres have turned me into a Bills state of mind
For the last several years the Bills got me to the point where I simply dont care what happens. Dumped my season tickets. I used to get angry, sad, etc..full range of emotions. Now I usually dont or wont even watch an entire game anymore, because I dont care if they win, lose, whatever. The Sabres have now got me watching other things on TV and, much like the Bills, I WILL NOT spend my hard earned money to buy a ticket and go to a game. NO WAY. So thanks Darcy and company for saving me some cash but at the same time RUINING one of the former joys in life. And I know there are thousands more like me.

All this Mr. Moneybags could have been avoided if you would have cleaned house when you came in. Certainly there was alot of tradition to admire and praise but when it comes to winning the cup there is none. An entirely new group was needed to look at this organization throughout. Some how it stopped short at GM, coach, and players. Your in last place, your heart and soul is PO and your top draft choice is PO,and your top addition last year must be PO cause he took three useless penalties in the closing minutes of one goal game last night. Please don't tell these fans that this GM is going to take us through trade deadline and draft! These last couple of weeks aren't going to be pretty but your getting everything you asked for by not doing the right thing in the first place!

Why are the changes so slow to happen?
Why does it take several years to fire a stalemate coach? How many flounders does Darcy need to make before he's shown the door? Why does Captain Pominville wear a miniskirt? I like Terry Pegula - he's just surrounded himself with some really bad people. Man up Terry and flush this toilet - its full of poopie. Take some of your cash and start at the top. Make an offer that a good GM can't refuse! Last I checked, no salary caps at that level. I bet a good GM is cheaper than a Harbor Center.

Can someone explain what Walmart has to do with anything? I can't see any relationship between the Sabres (Hockey team with overpaid underperformers) and Walmart (A department store that sells the same products for less than darn near everyone else). I'm missing the connection.

Hearing Millers post game after another loss. There was that hint that there is/are problems in the locker room. I said that last season and no one listened. The problems really inflated after the Lucic hit last season. There is a cancer in that room and that is Miller himself. I think the players wanted to push him out of here and Ruff was the victim of circumstance. The wrong guy got ousted. Many of the players won't play in front of Miller period. Miller said something at one time to start something in that room maybe for a long time now. These guys really may not be bad players. Something happened in there. Could there be a problem with his huge ego and the players laid it into Miller at one time or another in the past? There are guys here that don't get along with Miller and I am sticking to that. Kaleta should have been in that line up yesterday. I don't blame him one bit for being unhappy about it. Miller needs to grow up!

All you whiners, yet come next game the areana will be full, jerseys sold, concessions sold, etc. We never improve in our sports teams because "Sabre fan" is "i better go and support or they will move" guy and all that does is allow the owner to collect his profit and have no motivation to make changes. If i had to pay thousands in season ticket prices and all the extras i'd have to take real long look at what i'm getting for my money and look elsewhere to be entertained. If you think this team is anywhere close to being competative your foolish. The vets are over-valued by managment and the young players are simply not blue chip talent. We need a new GM ASAP
