Sabres Grigorenko should still be here

When the Buffalo Sabres decided to keep Mikhail Grigorenko on the roster rather than send him back to juniors, I applauded their decision.  Grigorenko had dominated play in the Quebec Major Junior League with 50 points in 32 games.  What more could he do there? It was time to see how he would handle the leap to the National Hockey League.

When the Sabres opted to send the 18 year old Grigorenko back to juniors, I was left with one question. Why?

What is this going to accomplish? Okay, that's actually a second question.   He had nothing left to prove in juniors and even if he takes the Quebec Remparts on his back and leads them to a Memorial Cup Championship, I'll still be wondering why he isn't here getting ice time and developing.

In what has turned out to be one of the most miserable, depressing, life sucking seasons in Sabres history, Grigorenko, and what his future could be, provided one of the very few exciting story lines on this team.

I didn't go to the scrimmage back in January because I missed hockey so much that I had to see it as soon as possible.  I didn't go because it was free, although that did fit my budget nicely.  I went to see Mikhail Grigorenko as did many of the ten thousand fans who were in attendance that night.

The highlight of the season, to this point, was being in the First Niagara Center on January 29th to see Grigorenko score his first and only NHL goal.  The ovation from the crowd was tremendous and it continued in the TV timeout when the goal was announced.  Grigorenko had a big smile on his face as he stood by the Sabres bench.

In the first few games of the season as we were all debating whether or not the team should keep their first round pick in last year's draft on the roster or send him back, I felt he should stay as long as he didn't look completely lost and was a liability.

While his numbers certainly didn't set the league on fire, Grigorenko did not look overmatched.  He played in 22 games, recording one goal, four assists and was a minus two while averaging 9 minutes and 44 seconds of ice time.  He averaged just 12 shifts a game and eventually found himself playing on the fourth line.

Was he a defensive liability?  There are six forwards still on the roster who have a plus/minus worse than Grigorenko's.  He had a minus game just six times out of the 22 games in which he dressed and was even or a plus player in his last eight games before being sent back to juniors.

Grigorenko may have seen this coming since his playing time was reduced dramatically after Ron Rolston took over, which is ironic because Rolston's strength is thought to be his ability to teach young players. Grigorenko registered at least ten minutes of ice time in 10 of the 14 games he played in while Lindy Ruff was the coach.  With Rolston behind the bench, Grigorenko topped that ten minute mark only once in eight games. He was at six minutes of ice time or less in four of the eight games.

Instead of going back to juniors, Grigorenko should have been getting more ice time and a chance to play on a top two line.  What have the Sabres got to lose?  This season is now all about trying to find out which young players will make up the new core group going forward.  Grigorenko would have been better served to continue to work with Dawn Braid, the Sabres skating coach and be under the watchful eye of Doug McKenney, the Sabres  strength and conditioning coach rather than be in the Quebec League.

Sabres Grigorenko should still be here

Agreed.
Instead of giving ice time to Steve Ott, Jochent Hecht, Drew Stafford, Nathan Gerbe (and I'll even throw John Scott into the mix), why not play Grigo? The season was already a bust 20 games in - nothing to lose! It's not like he would have played any worse than those players anyways.
03/19/2013 10:54AM
Well said Howard!
Grigorenko should still be here and dead weight like Hecht, Stafford, and even Leopold should be gone. I don't feel it was a mistake to keep Grigs here, the mistake occurred when he wasn't given time with better players. You look around the league to the other rookies that Grigorenko will be compared to and you see that Yakopov spent time with better talent on both the first and second lines in Edmonton. Galchenyuk in Montreal has played first and second line and is going to be viewed as a better player than Grigs, and even Dougie Hamilton in Boston, he has played top one and two defensive pairings all year, and you can bet he has been tied to Chara's hip to learn the NHL. It is a mistake of the organization in development of genuine NHL prospect rookies that they are not given a serious look in the NHL. Myers is the exception to this, and now he could use a little conditioning in Rochester (never gonna happen). Borrowing from Paul Hamilton, the next step for the Sabres, if they want to progress is to get rid of Darcy. Perhaps there is a drive scheduled over to Darcy's house by Terry and Ted after the Sabres lose the next three games this week (or at best get 2 of 6 possible points, without a win of course).

Heads on the sand...
Agreed...but the coaches and management of this team are under the delusion that some of the overpaid, underachieving veteran stiffs on this roster give them a better chance of making the playoffs this year and, therefore, a better chance for coach/GM to keep their jobs. Someone should clue them in that they are one of the worst teams in the league and that this season is over. Now is the perfect time for the younger players to gain more experience, not less or none, in an effort to jumpstart the long rebuilding process ahead. I guess denial is a powerful force to overcome.
03/19/2013 11:08AM
Why? How about because he stunk in the NHL?
Is that clear enough for you, Howard? Stink, stank, stunk. "...did not look overmatched"????? Are you insane? He was less of a factor on the ice than Hecht AND Gerbe combined! Just because he scores goals in the shooting gallery of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (the actual name of the league, sport) doesn't mean a blessed thing in the NHL. If a goalie did well there, THAT would be impressive. Grigorenko MAY amount to something in the NHL someday. SOMEDAY. But just because the media and fans, who apparently never saw the kid play but somehow annointed him anyways as a star, say so doesn't make it that way. Let's take a look at the assumptions we can make based upon his time in the NHL so far. Does he have breakaway speed? No. Does he have a tremendous shot? No. Is he a great stickhandler? No. Did he get a couple of assists on fluke goals like the one Hecht scored? You betcha. Okay, fantastic but he ain't no Mogilny and he certainly isn't flashy like Afinogenov and certainly is no Evgeni Malkin. In fact he is more like Denis Tsygurov or Alexei Yashin at this point if you want comparable NHL players. Get a grip people, he isn't that good at this point. Whining about his ice-time doesn't change the fact that when he was on the ice, no matter who he was with, he did NOTHING. Whether five minutes or twenty five doesn't change that nothing happened while he was on. Even ANDREW PETERS, who knows nothing, knew Grigorenko needed to go back to juniors. If he was that good, people outside of the area would be screaming at us to keep him. They aren't, Howard.
03/19/2013 11:08AM
its about
the roster spot and darcy not admitting he's wrong with the jochen signing. Watching darcy's team is about as miserable as listening to his worthless interviews. Could anyone deny the obvious, and at the same time say less than darcy does? Seriously. It's really bad.
03/19/2013 11:12AM
enuff
how can you expect this organization to make a rational decision? they been managed lunatically for years
03/19/2013 11:17AM
Amazing
How many fans in Buffalo simply cannot understand the logic behind sending the kid back down. Look ..... the kid has a lot to learn in his game to be able to play at this level. Him staying up here under the constant onslaught of fan and media abuse thatis the norm in Buffalo would have wrecked him within a year. Simple as that.
03/19/2013 11:18AM
Confidence
Is something you DO NOT want to lose at 18 years old in the NHL. It's a good move to send him back down.
03/19/2013 11:21AM
This isn't about winning or losing
or "nothing to lose".......... It's about the kid getting a taste of the NHL, finding out what he needs to improve on and being able to do it away from the big lights. Why is this concept so difficult for Howard to grasp?
03/19/2013 11:23AM
Free Agency
They sent him down because if he played one more game the year would count towards his free agency time. Now he can play in the playoffs in Jr, and then move to the AHL (where he really belongs at this point in his development). The only risk was to see if he could make the straight jump and he wasn't quite there.
03/19/2013 11:29AM
You're Right Simon!
This is on Darcy obviously. He is living in a dream world where he thinks this team can make a run and get in the playoffs and he doesn't want to waste time developing a kid this year because he's scared that he will be out of a job if his team misses the playoffs again. IMO Darcy is one of the worst GM's in the league now. He has never been good at his job on a consistent basis. The Cup team in the late 90's was Muckler's team for the most part. Darcy brought in a few pieces, but in the end he didn't get us a cup. He got extremely lucky after the first lockout. The soft, weak, yet fast team he put together before the lockout thrived with the new rules. He didn't know those rules were coming a few years earlier when he put that soft team together. He got lucky. Once the rules started being called like they were before the lockout and once he let his top two players go the team stunk again. He had no answers then and he has no answers now. Let me say it again. While Darcy has pulled off a few great trades during his time here, he has for the most part been an average to below average GM in this league and if any of Pegula's people think he is one of the best in the league, as has been stated on this station in the past, then Pegula needs to fire those people asap. They are making him look like an idiot. If Pegula let's Darcy trade away pieces of this team at the deadline he should just sell the team to someone else because it will show that he has no freaking idea how to run a hockey team. Darcy should have been fired before Ruff. It's disgusting as a fan to watch this pathetic excuse for a team night after night. This isn't hockey heaven by a long shot. It's much closer to hockey hell, or at the very least hockey purgatory. Get a clue Mr. Pegula!! Your GM is a joke, your team is a joke and if you don't change things soon you will be considered a joke not just in Buffalo, but around the league as well.
03/19/2013 11:35AM
michael, we knew you,not well enough!!
we all know how completely irrelevant and stupid, regier is, not going there now. they gave him the tryout, then kept him.that was good news. now, regier sends him down and lose a year!! how incredibly stupid is that? and yet regier still is employed. when you sit and wonder what's going on with this club, you only need to look at the owner!! what's that? owner, what steenkeeng owner?we know, i think, his name is "TERRY PEGULA", don't we? i, personally wonder what he looks like, color of his hair, does HE have hair, body size, you get what i'm saying. has he shown his face at any public outibgs, practices or games of the sabres? no!! where is he? i think his absence does more damage than anything else. MR> PEGULA< RAISE YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAND, REPRESENT AND DECIDE WHAT, WHERE, WHEN YOU YOU WILL SAVE YOUR TEAM AND YOUR LOW REPUTATION. BE THE GOOD BUSINESS MAN WE THINK YOU TRULY ARE. AFTER ALL YOU BECAME RICH BECAUSE OF YOUR SOUND MANAGEMENT OF YOUR BUSINESSES.I'M OUT!!
03/19/2013 11:45AM
Circle the wagons!
Ruff is doing everything he can do to win and keep his job. Rolston is doing the same so he can keep this head coaching gig! Grigorenko should be getting MUCH more ice time on one of the top six lines...if that's what you want to call them. Maybe he could give us fans one thing to smile about and possibly turn into hope for next year. This team has nothing more to lose! Time for to start rebuilding!
03/19/2013 11:49AM
Articles like this make WGR look bad..
You don't think Grigo was a liability? I realize the kid is the potential future of this team, but he was absolutely horrible on the ice, his skating was awkward and was completely outmatched, he was over thinking plays, his confidence was low, he didn't win face-offs (in fact at one point they had to have his wingers take the face-offs) his puck possession wasn't great. and again I realize he's 18. But why work on all those little things here when he can do it in Juniors and still be successful for confidence. Lindy Ruff said he wasn't ready, and now a coach that has coached some of the best players in the world says he is not happy, sorry Howard, but both of those guys know this game better than you ever will. Watch any footage of that kid and he wasn't ready. It's not completely uncommon to send young kids back to the minor leagues. I swear you guys talk with emotion and do not realize how just naive about this sport you can be at times.
03/19/2013 11:54AM
Grigorenko Had To Go
Howard you said it in your article - "his playing time was reduced dramatically after Ron Rolston took over, which is ironic because Rolston's strength is thought to be his ability to teach young players." The reason Rolston let him go back to the minors is because Rolston did get to teach Grigorenko at the AHL level. It is the same old same old, you get attached to a player (i.e. Hecht) and you keep him around even if he is not producing. With Grigorenko he might not have been producing as some would like to see - but hey - he was playing like the rest of the Sabres - so he did fit in!
03/19/2013 11:56AM
You're a Joke Howard, A REAL JOKE!!!
Having him back in juniors was probably the best move Darcy has ever made or what time he may have left to run this pathetic operation. A kid with an upside like him don't belong here going through a suck fest like it has been. He don't need to go through that. It would only really ruin him. This should have been done after the 9 game trial. The only mistake was eating a year of his contract. Regier may have saved this kid in the long run. This team sucks. Why put him through that. What goes on in the locker room with this joke of a team, he don't need to break in with it. Let him start fresh next season and hope all the cancer on this roster is gone, especially the head case Miller, which is the mother tumor. On your interview with Rolston this morning...I give up!!! You will never toughen up. You will always be soft. Finally a compliment...Mondays show was the best I ever heard on this station. It was all static. The same goes for the Hockey Shill Line Show. Thank you WGR on that one! Best radio in a long time. Is that the same sound that goes on in Darcys office??? (LOL) WGR should do more gigs like that. The first time both shows made sense, especially Shillvesters. SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!! THEY'RE HERE!!! (from the movie Poltergiest)
03/19/2013 12:00PM
Absolutely Not
Wrong again, Howard.
03/19/2013 12:06PM
RON ROLSTON
Strength- teaching young players. Results Brennan gone,Grigorenko gone! In addition he has stripped this team of any sign of backbone.McCormick gone Scott benched Kaleta Who knows. At least with Ruff They were pathetic but at least were tough.Rolston andRegier on in way over their heads.Time for Ted Black to earn his paycheck and take over this mess
03/19/2013 12:11PM
Sorry for Grigs-he didn't belong here yet
This team should be basing playing time on merit, not potential or history. That one thing that has gotten them in trouble in the first place this season (especially history with Stafford, Hecht, but also Foligno, Myers, etc.). Grigs is slow, doesn't battle, hasn't shown much of a knack for getting into good scoring areas, etc. It's clear watching him on the ice that he is a step (or 2 or 3) slower than everyone else and is not ready for the NHL, at least not with the Sabres and their overall performance. That being said, he might be able to step up next year as he continues to grow but will probably end up in the AHL for a bit. By the way, Grigs had a lower /- than others because he never plays-low playing time, never out in tough situations, never out at end of games, etc.
03/19/2013 12:18PM
NO ....he should have lasted
for only the 5 game tryout and then should have been promptly sent back to juniors. Anyone with common sense can see he was not ready to play in the nhl. Then next season he should have went to Rochester to develop further. All this mismanagement points back to Darcy Regier. How in the world is this guy making decisions for this team. Cmon Pegula...get rid of him and hire a real GM with vision on how to put together a team. Regier has failed...that is clear.
03/19/2013 12:19PM
Further Proof
of our dysfunctional sports teams.
03/19/2013 12:25PM
no
He will be back next year. He needs to play and work on his skating.
03/19/2013 12:35PM
What else is new
Same old bs, I have tickets for an April game and I'm not going. I'm not gonna drive an hour, Pay for parking and outlandish price for food and watch a losing product on the ice. I have been a Sabres fan for decades but soon that will change.
03/19/2013 12:52PM
Typical Sabres
Owners, coaches and gm's can change but we still have the same old Sabres... ZZZZZZZ
03/19/2013 12:58PM
Brad Boyes should still be here too and not Drew Stafford
FIRE REGEIR!!!
03/19/2013 1:09PM
Simon You are wrong
He cannot skate with this level yet. He is not ready. Any true hockey mind would tell you that. the big travesty is the egg on sabres brass for not making this descion sooner
03/19/2013 1:28PM
good points...
but why would they want him exposed to a toxic environment?...he got a good taste of the nhl and seemed to be more than ok with being back in the "q"...he'll be back soon enough and by the time he gets back, the roster will have been overhauled (hopefully) and he'll be in an environment more condusive to learning and developing
03/19/2013 1:41PM
could agree more
In what has turned out to be one of the most miserable, depressing, life sucking seasons in Sabres history,
03/19/2013 1:50PM
this article makes perfect sense....
....which is exactly why is what the Sabres didn't do. I'd really like a solid answer from SOMEONE in the Sabres organization as to where this team is going....what's the plan? What's the philosophy? Are we sticking with the veterans or rebuilding? The Sabres front office is asleep at the wheel. Ted Black has been on record as saying Regier and the team are only being evaluated by their performance SINCE Pegula took over, but that performance is the worst in Sabres history. We don't need to look at the last 16 years, we only need to look at the last TWO to know something needs to be done. Lindy is gone and Buffalonians STILL hate this team.
03/19/2013 2:37PM
Without a doubt!
I agree, let's see what he has. I would even experiment with different lines, systems and linemates. This season was a loss from the start of the Rolston era(changing coaches).
03/19/2013 2:50PM
Why?
He hasn't done anything to prove to stay. He didn't have the Tyler Myers rookie start, not even flashes of it. Just keep him down until he improves. If not then cut losses now.
03/19/2013 2:53PM
If he was good
he would of made an impact with the little time he had, thats what good players do, they work with what they got and capitolize on chances or make thier own.
03/19/2013 2:54PM
HOWARD YOU ARE SO RIGHT!
I AM A 52 YEAR OLD MAN BEEN A SABRES FAN SINCE THE GREAT SPIN THAT BROUGHT THE GREAT GILBERT TO BUFFALO. FOR THE LIFE OF ME I DO NOT KNOW WHY GRIGORENKO IS NOT HERE PLAYING ON THE LIFELESS POWERPLAY. WHEN THEY SENT THAT KID DOWN I THINK IT SHOWS HOW BRAIN DEAD THE SABRES ARE AT THIS TIME. I THINK THEY WILL NOT WIN ANOTHER GAME THIS SEASON. THIS IS NOT REALLY A BAD THING THEY NEED TO HIT ROCK BOTTOM CLEAN HOUSE OF THE DEADWOOD AND START OVER. LAST YEAR THEY HAD A GREAT DRAFT THIS YEAR THEY COULD HAVE AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER CLEAN HOUSE MOVE WHATEVER YOU CAN AND START FRESH.
03/19/2013 2:59PM
darcy regier
this is why darcy as too go.lindy could have help develop grigorenko depending of the situation.this is gonna miss the playioff.so play the kid instead of the veteran who has no passions anymore.
03/19/2013 3:01PM
rolston
this decision is to save rolston job.he want to make the playoff to show he belong in they nhl.the sabres was better serve by lindy with a gm that no how to build a contender.
03/19/2013 3:19PM
Grigerenko vs Seguin
The comparison to what the Bruins have done with Seguin to what the Sabres are doing with Grig is a joke unless you believe the Sabres are as good a team as the Bruins are. They could afford to not play him as they had a very solid lineup whereas the Sabres are still looking for a lineup that can win.
03/19/2013 3:35PM
Grigorenko
Very well said, I couldn't agree more. He had no business playing with John Scott(who never should have been signed, and never getting off the bench in third periods.
03/19/2013 4:02PM
smh
Thats about all you can do. I think Miller will be gone by next year and possibly Pominville or Vanek. One of the three stays but i highly doubt 2 or 3. The Thought is to get him out of this atmosphere and back to basics with a coach that can help him.Rolston is an Interim Coach that is all!! He is playing what he knows best to try to win him the job.
03/19/2013 4:21PM
Well
I do agree. But our GM thinks he's God's gift to hockey so what do we do?
03/19/2013 4:21PM
Grigs is Simply yet ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF FAILURE OF SCOUTING AND GM..
At "THE BIGGEST NICKLE AND DIME LOOSER FRANCHISE IN PRO SPORTS"!! Now.. Go shine your golf clubs, Simon! EXTENDUM REGEIRUM FOREVER 4UM... WHO'S "LAFFing" NOW!!??
03/19/2013 4:21PM
Puzzling ....
Agree. The Sabres have already bought the first year of his pro contract, so it's not a money thing. It's not like the Sabres need to keep some other high-power scorer on the ice. Grigs may be the only Sabre who could actually benefit froma crappy season.
03/19/2013 4:46PM
Total Agreement Howard
They have nothing to lose this season now thats it pretty much over with. Get him back up here play 15-20 minutes a game and lets see what he can do.I can live with rookie mistakes. Not much better that what im seeing now. I just dont understand their philosphy.
03/19/2013 10:21PM
We need more like Grigorenko.
I couldn't agree more! This kid has got tons of raw talent. A key ingredient the current Sabres have little of. Even if he was a liability on the ice the worst thing that happens is that you slip 1 spot in the rankings before you reach the bottom.
03/19/2013 10:51PM
swampsabre
There to busy windowdressing the boys from rocha for trade deadline. What a save by Jonas at the end to save the game!!!!!
03/19/2013 10:59PM
HEY
RIDE ENROTH TILL HE LOSES AND BENCH THE FOOLS THAT HELPED BLOW A 2 GOAL LEAD- C IF THEY CAN TRADE MILLER MAYBE? IF WE R GONNA LOSE? I'D PREFER TO DO IT WITH KIDS WITH A FUTURE INSTEAD OF OVERPAID STIFFS
03/19/2013 11:21PM
Disagree
Grigorenko showed many signs of weakness and he is not yet ready for the NHL. 12 mins a game on the 4th line will not develop a player. He should have never stayed with the Sabres to start the season, and he should have been sent to Rochester to get his feet wet with professional hockey, not Quebec for a silly little playoff run.
03/20/2013 7:22AM
Correction
He shouldn't have been here in the first place. Looks timid and out of place on the ice. He is at least a year or two away from the NHL
03/20/2013 7:59AM
Just what the Sabres need, Howard stop staying up so late, your delerious!
Yeah Grigroenko is just what the sabres need, another slow no talent player who shy's away from any kind of physical play. He may have done some good things in junior hockey but when he was asked to go up against the big boys, clearly Grigroenko was a fish out of water. Darcy wasted a 1st round draft pick on what could be the worst Russian skater I've ever seen! Almost as big a waste as picking this guy in last years draft was keeping him on the roster for the first part of the season. Why is Darcy so in love with soft European players?
03/20/2013 7:19PM
I Ain't Worried
Regier won't be here much longer. Shill Hamilton thinks they won't fire Regier. Hamilton thought they wouldn't fire Ruff either. Did Brian Holzinger ever have that 50 goal season Hamilton said he would??? PAUL HAMILTON = WRONG!!! Thatis why he don't leave comment sections. He thinks he knows everything. NOTTTTTTTTTTTTT. What a shill idiot.
03/20/2013 10:23PM
the only reason
Darcy should be fired for this mismanagement. The pick was great but the kid could not play defence as yet. Should never have been keep here but we were desperate for a centre. Thank God Ott has been our best player. This is killing me a 40 year fan
