Patrick Roy

Attitude Adjustment

Put your ear to the ice and you’ll hear something coming to the NHL.  Hall of Fame goaltender Patrick Roy is getting more attention each year and appears to be intent on coaching at the top level.  He says he’s ready.  Jeremy White asks: Could that be Darcy Regier’s big move?

It’s hard to know what Roy has in mind for his NHL coaching career.  There are some suggesting that he’s destined to take a front office job.  Some think he’s going to be a dynamic coach that will energize a team in need of a boost.

Roy has been closely linked to NHL gigs before.  He was offered the job in Colorado, and he was the favorite to get Montreal’s job before the Canadiens went with Michel Therrien (and they’ll probably keep him for a while).

Patrick Roy represents exactly what the Buffalo Sabres need.  This franchise is in desperate need of a fresh pair of eyes.  The Sabres need some sort of identity as well.  Patrick Roy would immediately give the Sabres locker room a level of credibility that it doesn’t have, and hasn’t had in approximately six years.

Roy has Stanley Cups.  The Buffalo Sabres, to a man, do not.

Roy has had plenty of success coaching in the QMJHL, and oh-by-the-way is the coach currently in charge of your young wonder-kid that you hope develops into a top tier NHL player.  This isn’t to say that you hire a coach just for Mikhail Grigorenko, but it’s in the mix.

The move would make sense for Grigorenko’s future.

The move would make sense for Ryan Miller’s as well.  I don’t know whether or not Regier has plans on bringing Miller back after next season, but perhaps a Hall of Fame goaltender as the coach could help get that done.  Who better to understand what Miller goes through than a goaltender that once removed himself from a team because he’d been hung out to dry?

The move would make sense for the franchise image.

Success.  Credibility.  Attitude.

Patrick Roy might not be the nicest guy in a room of NHL coaches (He did send his son to go fight another goaltender).  It will be suggested that he might not be quite ready to deal with the media or fans NHL level expectations (But he did have the best smack-talk line of all time).

What kind of coach might he be?  ESPN's Scott Burnside filed this piece about Roy, surprising his friends and critics.

Highlight:
"Explosively passionate about winning (he once destroyed a television and VCR unit in Anaheim after a game in which then-Colorado coach Bob Hartley, now a close friend, had the temerity to briefly pull Roy even though the Avs went on to win the game), many believed Roy simply did not have the proper emotional makeup to coach junior hockey. Yet he has embraced the role, channeling that passion into a completely different space, in a way that continues to surprise friends and critics alike."

He says he’s ready for an NHL job, and the Sabres need a guy like this more than ever.

I’m trying to figure out why the Sabres have labeled Ron Rolston as the INTERIM Head Coach.  Rolston has worked with a number of the players through their development in Rochester and now he’s calling the shots for the parent club.  Is it a foregone conclusion that he’ll head back to Rochester next year?

There’s a question that I’ve been struggling with since Rolston was named interim coach of the Buffalo Sabres:  What’s the goal?

Make the playoffs?

Look respectable?

Develop some kids?

I can’t seem to figure out whether or not Rolston is coaching to keep this job, or to get it lined up for someone else.  It’s entirely possible that Rolston is minding the store in the interim, and would head back to Rochester with some NHL experience and good standing within the organization.

To some that may seem unfair, but the truth is that a quick stint in the NHL and then back to the AHL is nothing unusual - players do it all the time.

***

This brings us to embattled General Manager Darcy Regier.  Armed with a contract extension (and seemingly full support of ownership) it’ll likely be Regier picking the next coach of the Buffalo Sabres.

He installs Rolston as the interim coach with eyes on getting a new head man to start next season. He may have decided to ride out this season and get some “development” for the kids, and then hand the keys to the big rig over to someone he feels more deserving of the gig.  The Sabres haven’t ruled Rolston out as head coach going forward, but why hold back the title?  The Sabres could remove that “interim” tag and fire him the next day.  Does the GM possibly have the mindset that the coach of the team has to “earn it” the way that the players do?

They’re holding back that title for a reason, right?

Regier calls Roy a “terrific coach”, and freely admits that he’s “had a number of converstions with Patrick over the last few weeks.”

Regier and Roy have a working relationship.  Regier frequently mentions conversations that he has with Patrick Roy.  He has had reason to talk with Roy for the better part of the last year, as the organization set its sights on Mikhail Grigorenko.

In short - the Sabres GM has had frequent conversations with one of the NHL’s hottest coaching candidates, in a season where he’s rolling out an interim coach and quite possibly looking to reinvent the Sabres brand.

The biggest roadblock may be the GM himself.  Would Darcy Regier hire this "terrific coach" that's known to be a huge personality and might clash with people more than Lindy Ruff or Ron Rolston would?

We’ll have to wait and see whether or not the GM keeps his job, and then what the future brings at head coach.

My guess is that if they wanted Ron Rolston as the coach, they’d take off that interim tag.

Leaving tags on?  Isn’t that the easiest way to return something?

Here's the bibliography of sorts...the buzz on Roy has been growing...

Patrick Roy
YES,please, please, please!!
03/20/2013 1:38PM
Good at developing young players, but maybe not ready for the NHL ?
All indications are that Rolston is suited for young players development, than an NHL coach right now. Would he not be more valuable in Rochester, or a new player development position with an experienced head coach in the NHL ? You have skating coaches, goalie coaches, defense coaches etc, why not a young player develepment coach ?
03/20/2013 1:48PM
darcy
I hope this move with grigs is to get him under Patrick Roy for the playoffs to get the experience and so when they bring him in as a coach for the sabres its an easier transition
03/20/2013 1:57PM
Please Hire Roy!
I would hire Patrick Roy in a second. He's honestly been one of the names I've been hoping for ever since the Sabres fired Ruff.
03/20/2013 1:59PM
Please Hire Roy!
I'd hire Roy in a second! He was one of the first names I thought of when the Sabres fired Ruff. I think he'd instantly receive credibility in the locker room and is the right man for the job if Buffalo lets go of Rolston at the end of the year.
03/20/2013 2:05PM
Patrick Roy would be a perfect fit
Patrick Roy would be the best choice for a head coach for next season. Rolston is a good coach also, but if I had the choice Patrick Roy would be #1.

Regier needs to go.
Regier has already stunk up the joint enough. Please get rid of him.
03/20/2013 2:33PM
Think Roy would dump Gerbe for once and for all?
If he insists on losing Gerble, Stifford, Suckers, Alka Sulzer, Pomminjoke, Kolissiona, Eenis, AND Millsie; then I have no problem with Patrice Wooah as head coach under ANY new GM except Ruff or Regier.
03/20/2013 2:40PM
Phil Housley
I think Phil Housley would be a better fit he did a great job with the top players not sure Roy would want the Buffalo job!!!
03/20/2013 2:41PM
Lets hope it means something like that
Unfortunately it just seems to be that Darcy is as conservative as possible when it comes to every move he makes. The few things he does to make a splash usually drain the pool. I also suspect Darcy, as some others have suggested, likes Rolston becausehe's a guy that he can keep under his thumb. If Roy comes in and (most likely) insults the moves Darcy has made to assemble this team, that just makes Darcy look worse.
03/20/2013 2:47PM
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I SAID THIS...
Risebrough-Roy-Laperrire-Gainey; Pegula's next GM-COACHING STAFF!! When will they EVER LISTEN TO ME!??? EXTENDIUM REGEIRIUM FOREEVER4IUS WALMARTIUS!!! SPRING IS NEAR.... Isn't that just EITE!???
03/20/2013 2:48PM
Shot in the arm
Boy does this organization need something like Patrick Roy. A proven winner. This would energize the presently disgusted fan base and send a burst of energy throughout the organization. The problem might be that Roy does not fit Darcy's apathetic lifeless style. We see that in his Mr. Peepers choice for captain and the Darcy coaching clone in Ron Rolston. I think Darcy might be threatened by a strong personality. Successful franchises have assistant GMs like Montreal with Dudley and Carriere, but Darcy refuses to have any assistants, because I'm sure he feels threatened. Nothing against Rolston, but I hope the organization sees what a great move this would be to get Patrick Roy.
03/20/2013 2:50PM

FIRST SPRING CLEANING MOVE: VAPORIZE REGEIRIUM
He can't scout or draft or trade or develop players or choose coaches! Why in the world would you let this FAILURE continue making catastrophic decisions following yet another failed season??? Give me ONE REASON WHY? Besides ensuring yearly, early SPRING GOLF!??? 4us4everextndiumelitesoftness 4u. Hear it? Who's LAFF ing now?
03/20/2013 3:21PM
Typical Jeremy...
Your like a little girl when it comes to this Hockeyteam and of they don't get Roy you'll love the other guy they picked. Its so pathetic how bias you are with the Sabres do.
03/20/2013 4:43PM
Roy defines winning
But like any coach Roy is not out there playing. This isn't "superstar goaltender" Patrick Roy, a goaltender so great that Ryan Miller would never get to that level in 5 lifetimes....this is Patrick Roy the coach. I like the idea BUT I don't like Regier choosing the players for Patrick Roy. Another GM hiring Roy as coach? Perfect idea. Perfect because it's a different GM making the personnel decisions. Regier can't get the right mix of players. Never has, never will. Even Scotty Bowman would lose if Regier was picking his players.
03/20/2013 4:51PM
How about Hawerchuk?
Another possible up and coming coach is Dale Hawerchuk. I've had the pleasure of watching him guide the Barrie Colts for the last three years and he definitely appears to be destined for the NHL.
03/20/2013 4:58PM
Make Roy Head Coach and Asst.GM
Maybe he could make Regier a success. Plus... The Sabres do still have to hand out a large pile of $$ if they fire him. What am I saying? Talkin like I hav a brane enjuree# sory%
03/20/2013 5:17PM
patrick roy
i like too have him in buffalo the guy win the stanley cup.win the memorial cup.is junior team is always a contender. he now what is need to do too win.
03/20/2013 5:20PM
roy
players like playing for him look at radulov and grigorenko.miller will have support.he no how to win.hey can't help bring free agent.buffalo need a guy like him.hey win in big market in montreal.
03/20/2013 5:25PM
patrick roy
i like it but he will not come this team is a mess.the guy as life behind the bench compare too rolston.regier must push hard for him too come in buffalo.is son playing in rochester could help.he now how too win.hey will do anything for is players.
03/20/2013 5:54PM
Darcy Still Has to Go
Please don't tell me if we hire Roy, Darcy stays. I don't care if its a younbg Scotty Bowman behind the bench the roster is a mess and that's Darcy's fault. A new coach is not nearly enough to get this emotionless bunch going in the right direction. It needs to start with Darcy's head, period. He can't survive this catastrophic season. It's his worst job, by far, and he's had planty of poor seasons during his time here. Fans need to want to embrace this team and I do not believe will, irrespective of the record, unless he's outta here. His relationship with Sabre Nation is irrepairable.
03/20/2013 5:56PM
Attitude Adjustment
Sabres need to hire a new GM before Darcy makes some more bone head moves like the Brennan trade. Bring in Cup experience at GM and the Coaching positions. Roy may be a good coaching choice but not as long as Darcy Regier is pulling the strings.
03/20/2013 6:58PM
In simplicity
I like the idea of Patrick Roy as coach, but I would like a different General Manager to do the hiring and work the trade deadline. Hope Brian Burke has been taking notes evaluating this team. FIRE REGEIR!!!
03/20/2013 7:01PM
Question
Any other Sabres rumors besides Ryan and Hiller coming here?
03/20/2013 9:35PM
Rolston in Rochester was a winner
Rolston gets here and his results have been disappointing... except from the kids who got called up from his old team. Think he can't make it in the NHL? Think Roy is the big difference this team needs? Think again. Step away from the new, shiny thing and remember who calls the player personnel shots around here. It'll be more of the same, mid level at best teams.
03/20/2013 9:53PM
miller w/ roy wont work
I think if we make roy the coach the sabres would be better off trading miller and getting a hold of some younger goaltenders who roy could tutor. Miller has to big an ego, 8 years in the league not to mention he is almost in his mid thirties, and I do not think miller would be open to suggestions on how to play in this league. I would love to trade pominville to the kings for bernier and I'm sure we could find someone to bite on miller who would give up a descent amount of talent.
03/20/2013 10:02PM
The Sabres
As we have grown use to here in Western New York, what we want as fans, no one cares about. As excited as I would be if the Darcy got Roy here, it would not surprise me if they try to sell us on how Rolston is the best guy for the job. Either way, he still he still has to find a way to get the team here to play together and mature as a team
03/20/2013 10:03PM
why ????
why is Regier still in charge Fans need to boycott games and send Pegula a message
03/21/2013 4:59AM
We need both Roy AND Darcy
You people know squat about hockey if you think Regier is a terrible GM. SQUAT! The guy has done a fine job. Not perfect, but how many of you do a perfect job when you're working? None of you. Keep Darcy and get Roy...or Ramsay...or Hawerchuk. Put Rolston back in Rochester.
03/21/2013 7:06AM
Terry....Teddy...Listen Up
Dudley and Roy...lots of test-osterone and passion. Players will either play hard or be gone.
03/21/2013 7:27AM
You're making too much of that "interim" title
Teams that fire coaches mid-season do this all the time. The Sabres claim to be big-time. Big-time teams have a thorough process for hiring their head coaches. They don't simply hand it to the guy on standby after a dozen games in which not a wholelot has changed.
03/21/2013 7:36AM
Makes Sense...
This suggestion would make a lot of sense, especially because I don't see Patrick Roy leaving the Remparts in midseason. Maybe these "conversations" that Regier continues to have included Roy telling him, "Hey, Darcy, not now... but the offseason works for me"? Also, Garth on HockeyBuzz posted a Tweet from McKenzie (TSN) that Grigorenko was sent down because when he reached 23 games (40 in a regular season) it would have burned a season of Free Agency for Grigorenko. So, while his playing 6 games burned a year of his rookie deal... he still keep a year of Restricted Free Agency (with Pegula's financial backing, this move makes a ton of sense for the Sabres). I, and others, likely need to eat some crow about Darcy's decision making process with Grigorenko (though, I still question his 4th line status on most nights).
03/21/2013 8:17AM
sometimes wgr is insane
It does not matter who you bring in here as coach if you still have the stooge GM bringing in midgets and players with no heart and grit. John Scott, doesn't play, kaleta is told to cool it, its just a matter of time before ott is told to tone it down. Myers, Vanek, ennis, gerber, pompom hit people with their purses every night, its like a pinball machine watching those guys get hit most nights. If I was Roy, I would demand a new GM before making a commitment or his future will be just like Rolston and notsoRuff's
03/21/2013 8:43AM
You still interested in this team?
I don't care anymore
03/21/2013 8:58AM
Right
Of all places to start his NHL coaching career it's going to be Barfalo. Hilarious.
03/21/2013 9:54AM
What?
You sir are an idiot if you think this guy has done a fine job. Please elaborate. How many stanley cups? Fine job? No. Average job? Maybe. Terrible job? Yes!
03/21/2013 9:58AM
Pat LaFontaine
What about Patty coaching this team. He loves Buffalo, did well here as a player and is passionate about hockey. He is having great success as a minor league coach as well. He has great personality, and is very well respected throughout the hockey world,he deserves a chance to coach here.
03/21/2013 10:13AM
A Point You Missed ...
With Patrick Roy being the head coach and part owner of the Remparts, I bet there was an agreement between Regier and Roy to have Grigerenko sent back to the Remparts, just in time for their playoff run. This would help Roy make a solid run at the Memorial Cup. Winning the Memorial Cup would help to further fortify Regier's reasoning for hiring Roy as head coach of the Buffalo Sabres and at the same time, it would bring value to the Remaparts, bolstering Roy's financial investment to the team. I believe that Roy will be the coach for the Sabres next season and I believe that this was figured out closely to the time that Ruff was fired. I'm all-in ... Go Sabres !!!
03/21/2013 10:25AM
Unreal
Stupid speculative article at best. Why do you guys get to produce this garbage? So the connection to Roy is that Rolston is INTERIM coach? So then it MUST be true...
03/21/2013 10:35AM
Gotta say
there has been a lot of Darcy hate going around that's baffling. yes there have been some bad moves and yes the team has been disappointing to say the least. HOWEVER, drafting the likes of grigs and girgs was inspired as well as trading Kassian for Hodgson (i honestly hated the move at the time i thought buffalo needed more big bodies that can score, look who was right on that one). Lieno was the BIGGEST fish in the market at the time a lot of teams were targeting him. unless you were Detroit or Philly you were probably targeting him. he also brought in hoff for 4mil for 10 years. From the year that he had before in Vancouver, that is an astounding signing! being a sabres fan all my life has been tough. bringing in someone like Roy, who knows what a winning team looks like in the locker room and on ice is a definite boost that the team needs. As for Darcy, he knows what he is doing and he knows that his team is under performing night in and night out. He's pretty crafty with trades as of late and despite the brennen trade, i think theres gonna be more movement come deadline and he's poised for another masterpiece like the kassian and gaustad trades
03/21/2013 10:57AM
I can't stand Shillvester and Petershill on the Hockey Shill Line gig
What a joke of a show that shills this pathetic hockey team. You wonder that since this show is broadcasted in the Sabres store at the FNC they both are told to do that by Mr Black himself or Terry Pegula to promote this garbage. You'd swear to God that these two idiots actually believe that this team is going to make the playoffs. What a joke of a gig. I can't listen to these two idiots anymore. There is absolutely no dose of reality on that show period. The screening of reality callers gets smoked out and only positive callers get on. What a pathetic waste of two hours. Put NASCAR in that slot. Kevin...I'm not stupid...this team isn't going anywhere as long as Darcy is GM. FIRE REGEIR!!! THIS TEAM SUCKS!!!
03/21/2013 11:12AM
Re: We need both Roy AND Darcy
Just another one of you that has been possessed believing in losing. You need to be exorcised. FIRE REGEIR!!!
03/21/2013 11:48AM
roy wouldn't come here
why do you people think he would want to come to buffalo. nothing but trouble here unless darcy goes
03/21/2013 1:05PM
Bring in 3
WHy not bring in all three top prospects. Roy, Hawerchuck and Housley. C0-Coaches. Try a new approach. Who needs assistants. Have co-coaches, all with an upside. That would be exciting.Keep Rolston too and perhaps have a Survivor type reality series where the winner gets to keep the head coaches job.(LOL- okay that is a little far fteched, but trying the co-coaching isn't). We have always been a "by committee" team, why not keep that going with our new coaching regime. Have Ruff come back and be a coaches coach?
03/21/2013 5:21PM
both Roy and Darcy
Well hell yes. There is obviously no lack of cohesion or character on this team. These guys are blls to the wall hair on fire tight. This man is in a very highly paid, top of his profession, position. Below average results are unacceptable.
03/23/2013 11:45AM
Doesn't matter who the coach is
We are lacking talent. We are lacking goal scorers. We are lacking faceoff talent and we are lacking a good power play. All this falls on the GM. Buffalo will never see the Stanley Cup until Pegula wakes up and fires his advisors and fires Regier.
03/23/2013 12:40PM
darcy must go
honestly, i have zero confidence in the man bringing a cup here. the way that this team was built was wrong from the word go. other GMs know that size and toughness win in the playoffs. now we are stuck with a team short on both that appears to be only so-so talent wise to boot. the hodgson trade looks super right now, of course if kassian turns into todd bertuzzi then darcy got smoked. like bad. 5'10" centers that can score like hodgson are common. derek roy comes to mind. tim connolly too. i digress. there are simply too many "puck moving" defensemen that wouldnt hit water if they fell out of a boat in the organization. ennis and gerbe are too small. hecht...if i have to explain hecht...nevermind. players like ott, foligno, and kaleta are the guys other PLAYOFF teams want. nobody wants gerbe. if anybody is calling for stafford, take whatever they offer so long as they dont send a soft undersized european winger back. ugh. seriously why would st patrick want this job?
