The Bills Make Me Wanna...

Smile?  Well it is a start at least.  This is why you draft a quarterback.  Even better, this is why you draft a quarterback early.  It gives your fans hope and hope, if you let it, can make you smile.

I thought I didn't need or want theBills to draft a quarterback with their first pick of the 2013 NFL Draft.  Well, I'm an idiot and I was wrong.  Drafting EJ Manuel was exactly what I needed the Bills to do.  I'm glad they knew what I wanted.

My worry was that there wasn't that much to differentiate one quarterback from the others and therefore waiting for whichever one dropped to you made the most sense.  But really, despite generally not being rated highly by any of the experts, Manuel is different than the rest.

Big strong guy with a big arm who can run.  I of course am not trying to sell you on the idea that Manuel is any kind of perfect prospect.  He was under the radar for a reason.  But I just love this pick.  Perhaps my favorite thing about it is that it is so bold.  Something about Nassib was always just a little too obvious and, I don't know, sort of weird.  I mean, really, the Syracuse coach, coordinator, and the quarterback too?  I love that the Bills had the pick of the litter and stepped out.  Picking Manuel is a big swing and of course they could end looking silly if he crashes and burns.  That is what you risk when you do something bold.

The way I see it, you have a choice to make.  You can buy into all the flimsy if not flat out flawed analysis of the NFL Draft and assume that this will be a disaster if for no other reason than it's the Bills.  Look, I get it.  It's not like there should be a bottomless pool of benefit of the doubt.  They've made loads of mistakes during this 13 year marathon of playoff misses.

Or you can give in and admit that the people who analyze draft picks are wrong about them constantly and hope for the best with the giant, big armed athlete the Bills just picked.

Ralph Wilson stepped aside.  Russ Brandon said the Bills were going to be different. Hiring Doug Marrone worked for me as evidence of that.  Picking EJ Manuel certainly does as well.

I don't mind telling you, I'm excited about this.  Heck, I can't wait for the first practice.  Seriously. I'm already looking forward to the first preseason game.

That's incredible.
