Bills TE Smith suffered weight room injury

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- Heading in to the off-season, there was some concern at One Bills Drive about the depth of the tight end position because of a significant injury to starter Scott Chandler. As Chandler continues to fight his way back from a torn ACL, another tight end got injured during the final week of Organized Team Activites.

Backup tight end Lee Smith was seen in a walking boot at Wednesday's practice and did not take part in any portion of the day. Smith is primarily known as a blocking tight end, having caught only four passes for 13 yards (two of which for touchdowns) in all 16 games last season.

Bills head coach Doug Marrone kept it short and sweet about the injury after Wednesday's practice.

"We had an injury in the weight room," he said. "He'll be available for training camp."

Assuming that Smith does not take part in the on-the-field portion of the mandatory minicamp in June, the tight end will have around two months to get ready for the start of training camp at St. John Fisher College in July.

He was one of nine players not even participating throughout individual drills due to injury. Besides Smith, the Bills were without wide receiver Stevie Johnson, defensive tackle Kyle Williams, offensive tackle Chris Hairston, wide receiver Marcus Easley, guard Keith Williams, linebacker Keith Pough, tight end Mickey Shuler and cornerback T.J. Heath.

Only four players in total were not in attendance throughout Wednesday's workout. Franchise free safety Jairus Byrd, outside linebacker Manny Lawson, defensive lineman Alan Branch and wide receiver Brandon Kaufman have all not taken part in any of the eight voluntary OTA sessions.

Byrd has yet to sign his franchise tag tender, Kaufman still has to go through graduation at Eastern Washington, whereas Lawson and Branch have been described as having obligations outside of football as a reason for their absences.

The Bills have two more days of OTAs on Thursday and Friday.
