The Sabres are openly pursuing a trade up in June 30th’s NHL Entry Draft.
Jeremy White’s obsession...err...continuing quest, surges forward.  Here’s a one-stop-shop of reasons the Sabres should be able to get it done.

A funny thing has happened on the way to the NHL Draft - trade fever has hit!  By trade fever I mean that everyone seems to carry the symptoms of trade fever, but the test results won’t come in until Sunday the 30th.

To recap, here’s the order at the top:

  1. Colorado
  2. Florida
  3. Tampa Bay
  4. Nashville
  5. Carolina
  6. Calgary
  7. Edmonton
  8. Buffalo

The Sabres have the 16th selection in the draft as well, which of course makes things interesting when it comes to trading up.

However, a trade up has to come with a partner.  Are there any of those?

  1. Colorado - “We have to make the best decision. Maybe the best is to trade it.”
  2. Florida - Make me an offer.”
  3. Tampa Bay - Tampa Bay Lightning director of amateur scouting Al Murray believes there to be at least five to 10 “A” or “A-” players”
  4. Nashville -We’ve already had people inquire with us about it and vice-versa” - That means they’ve made calls to trade out too.
  5. Carolina - “The Canes farm system isn't exactly stocked with good prospects and this draft is considered very deep.”  A trade with the Sabres specifically is mentioned in this piece.
  6. Calgary - Owners of three 1st round picks, they could be quite active.  That said, their assistant GM says it's a strong draft all the way...into the 3rd round.
  7. Edmonton - Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun writes:  “Been told Oilers GM Craig MacTavish has been busy working the phones. He wants to get help immediately, which means he could use some of the club’s young assets to see if he can find the right piece to get Edmonton to the playoffs. There is talk the Oilers may move right winger Nail Yakupov to bring back a package.”

Seems like there’s a lot going on right now and that draft day could be a frenzy.  What do the Sabres have to offer?  Here’s the “cupboard”:

  1. The 8th pick - Would fall well into the guidelines of where TB believes there to be an “A” player
  2. The 16th pick - In what is considered the deepest draft in 10 years, the 16th pick has rarely been this valuable.
  3. A pair of 2nd round picks
  4. Future draft picks
  5. Joel Armia - First rounder of 2011 draft will be coming to North America this year
  6. Mikhail Grigorenko - Top talent, top prospect in system
  7. Tyler Myers - Ultimate risk/reward
  8. Ryan Miller - Available
  9. Thomas Vanek - Available
  10. Marcus Foligno - Young power forward, promising top 6 ability
  11. Cody Hodgson - 34 points in his “sophomore” season was tops in the league.
  12. Brayden McNabb - Took a step back but projects as a top 4
  13. Jake McCabe - Big time success at WJC level
  14. Everything else - Really...it’s all available.  This isnt rocket science.  They have commodities.

Will deals be made?  The ammunition is there to get it done.  The draft board itself supports the idea of a move up more than ever.

Ammo - check.
Motive - check.
Dance partner - check, check, check.

If this were Twitter, I believe I’d wrap this up with: #DoSomethingDarcy.

He's told us that he's on it.

26 days and counting...

Do you think the Bills Stadium Committee meetings should be public?
Yes, the public should know what's going on
No, being public might affect talks in a negative way
