Former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez has been charged with murder and 5 gun related charges in the death of Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty.
The charge was made in Attleboro District Court on Wednesday. Police took Hernandez into custody at 9am Wednesday morning. Less than two hours later, the New England Patriots tweeted that they had released Hernandez..
" Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation,"the Patriots said in a statement. "We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do?"
The NFL also released at statement:
" The involvement of an NFL player in a case of this nature is deeply troubling, the Patriots have released Aaron Hernandez, who will have his day in court, " the league said. At the same time we should not forget the young man who was the victim in this case and take this opportunity to extend our deepest sympathy to Odin Lloyd's family and friends."
According to reports, Hernandez was seen leaving a bar in Boston with Lloyd and two other men just hours before Lloyd's body was discovered about one mile from Hernandez's home. Three men returned to Hernandez's home but Lloyd was not one of them.
It was later reported by ABC news that video surveillance from Hernandez's neighborhood shows Hernandez with Lloyd and two others only hours before Lloyd's body was found.
Hernandez was taken into custudy in handcuffs and booked at the North Attleboro police station.
The Patriots drafted Hernandez out of the University of Florida in 2010 and signed him to a 5 year contract worth near $40 Million last summer.
