MacKinnon, Barkov, and Jones Round Out Top 3 of 2013 NHL Entry Draft
The Colorado Avalanche kept the 1st overall pick and made the pick everybody expected them to make, selecting Halifax Mooseheads center Nathan MacKinnon.
After that, nothing went according to plan.
As Seth Jones fell, forward Alexander Barkov was taken 2nd overall by the Florida Panthers, and forward Johnathan Drouin, MacKinnon's teammate in Halifax, was taken by the Tampa Bay Lightning at 3rd overall.
The Nashville Predators were more than happy to take defensman Seth Jones of the Portland Winterhawks at 4th overall.
MacKinnon had 32 goals and 75 points in 44 games with Halifax this season. He and Seth Jones were talked about as the top 2 players in this draft, but the Florida Panthers apparently didn't think so, electing to go with Alexander Barkov out of the SM-Liiga, a Finnish professional hockey league in Europe. Barkov racked up 48 points in 53 games among professional hockey players.
Tampa Bay obviously fell in love with Johnathan Drouin's offensive ability. Drouin had a staggering 105 points in 49 games this past season.
Nashville gets an NHL ready defensman in Seth Jones, who at 6'4" 206 lb., who scored 14 goals and 56 points in 61 games this year with the WHL's Portland Winterhawks.
