Bills' Kolb leaves practice after slipping on rubber mat

Pittsford, NY (WGR 550)  -- On Saturday morning, the Buffalo Bills saw what was perhaps the most bizarre training camp injury of 2013. Veteran quarterback Kevin Kolb was on his way to another practice field at St. John Fisher College and slipped on a rubber walkway, causing him to hurt his knee.

"He bumped his knee and he'll be day-to-day," Head Coach Doug Marrone said after practice, indicating that he did not consider it to be serious.

Kolb, E.J. Manuel, Jeff Tuel and all the wide receivers and tight ends were transferring to the field inside Growney Stadium for their daily dose of throwing against air (no defenders). On the way there, Kolb slipped on the slightly wetted mats and landed awkwardly. Buffalo's head trainer Bud Carpenter by chance was walking right near Kolb and escorted the quarterback over to the field with the player's arm draped around the trainer's neck for support.

As soon as he got to the field, Kolb tossed his helmet aside in frustration while Carpenter examined his left knee. Soon after, Kolb removed his shoulder pads and walked to the locker room, signifying his day was done.

Already losing ground to rookie and first-round pick EJ Manuel in the quarterback competition, Kolb can ill-afford to be out for an extended period of time. Without Kolb, Manuel predictably took all the first-team repetitions. The rookie had been getting more and more time with the starters as camp has gone on.

Walking back from the stadium field to rejoin the rest of their teammates, the quarterbacks, wideouts and tight ends all took small, deliberate steps on the rubber mats while looking down at each step they took.

Right after the slip, grounds employees were attempting to broom some of the wet areas of the mats off, and an hour after the practice had concluded multiple people were working on drying the mats out in full.

Kolb was not available for comment after practice.
