Bills' Spiller excused, Hairston done for year

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- Despite all the adversity over the course of the past weekend, the Buffalo Bills got back on the practice field Monday morning on a shortened week to prepare for the Detroit Lions on Thursday. They did it, however, without having four prominent members of the roster on the field participating.

Quarterbacks EJ Manuel and Kevin Kolb, running back C.J. Spiller and cornerback Stephon Gilmore all did not practice in the fieldhouse at One Bills Drive. Manuel is still sitting out after the minor knee procedure he had done over a week ago, while the cases of Kolb and Gilmore have been well documented.

Spiller did not participate because of the current situation his family has found themselves in. According to various reports, Spiller's step-grandfather went on a shooting spree, killing two people before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life. Two additional people were also injured according to reports.

"I obviously excused him. Being able to go back and handle obviously which is a personal situation," Head Coach Doug Marrone said after practice. "I think we all feel the same way. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims as well as, you know, CJ and his family in this situation."

It's uncertain as to when Spiller will return to the team, but Marrone said that the two sides are in communication.

Besides the four, outside linebacker Marcus Dowtin had to do work on the side with trainers instead of practice. His injury is unknown to this point in time.

Among all the other news, the Bills also took away any possibility of fourth-year offensive tackle Chris Hairston coming back from his current injury. The team announced that Hairston has been placed on the reserve/non-football illness list, which they later confirmed means his season is over.

The Bills resume practice on Tuesday at 8am at One Bills Drive.
