Source: Bills place Kolb and Brad Smith on I-R

(WGR 550) -- As roster cutdown day approaches, the Buffalo Bills made room for two more players when the final 53-man depth chart will be released. According to a league source, the Bills have placed quarterback Kevin Kolb, wide receiver Brad Smith and fullback Drew Smith on season-ending Injured Reserve.

Since Kolb suffered his third documented concussion during his time in the league, the only known timeframe of his injury was that he would be out for "a while" according to Head Coach Doug Marrone. Due to EJ Manuel's knee procedure and need for at least two quarterbacks on the roster, the Bills elected to make the move to end Kolb's season.

The quarterback signed a two-year contract with the Bills in the off-season, anticipating a battle with the first-round pick Manuel to be the team's starting quarterback. Kolb, 28, was knocked out of the third preseason game against the Redskins, and there have even been reports that his career could be in jeopardy.

Brad Smith suffered a rib injury against the Detroit Lions at the end of the first half of the preseason finale. He was slowly walked up the ramp at halftime and the team announced that he would not return. Smith's absence on the roster means that both receivers Chris Hogan and Marcus Easley have likely made the 53-man roster.

Drew Smith, an undrafted free agent rookie, was the backup to fullback Frank Summers. His injury is unknown.
