Sabres beat Montreal 5-4 in shootout

Montreal, QC, Canada (WGR550)  -- The Buffalo Sabres opened the 2013 preseason portion of their schedule with a 5-4 shootout win over the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday night at Bell Centre.

Michael Bournival's goal late in the first period gave the Montreal Canadiens a 1-0 lead over Buffalo. Michael McCarron and Jarred Tinordi assisted on the goal scored at 15:18 of the opening stanza. That would be the only scoring in the period. Tinordi picked up the only Montreal penalty of the first after fighting with Cody McCormick. For his part in the scrap, McCormick received a five-minute fighting major, a ten-minute misconduct, and a two-minute minor for instigating.

Zemgus Girgensons scored less than a minute into the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Girgensons goal came shorthanded just fifty-eight seconds into the frame, and was unassisted. The tie was shrot lived as Bournival notched his second of the night to give the Canadiens a 2-1 lead. Martin St. Pierre and Greg Pateryn assisted on the goal. Jamie McBain's goal less than two minutes later re-tied the game, this time 2-2 in the middle stanza. Steve Ott and Ville Leino picked up assists on the goal.

Erick Nystrom's power play goal midway through the second spelled the end of the night for Jhonas Enroth. Head coach Ron Rolston told reporters prior to the game that both Enroth and Matt Hackett would split the game between the pipes. Zachary Fucale relieved Peter Budaj at the same time for Montreal. Girgensons' second goal of the night has evened the game up once again. This time Kevin Porter and Mark Pysyk assisted on the goal that made the score 3-3 in the frame.

Martin St. Pierre's goal with just seven minutes to go in regulation gave Montreal their fourth lead of the night, 4-3. The goal was assisted by McCarron for his second point of the night. Colton Gillies answered about three minutes later to bring Buffalo even, 4-4 late in the stanza. Rasmus Ristolainen and Cody McCormick assisted on the goal. Ristolainen, and fellow 2013 first round pick Nakita Zadorov made their Sabres debut in the game.

Neither team was able to score in the overtime period. The only penalty of the extra session was taken by Johan Larsson for holding. Despite a few chances 4-on-3, Montreal was not able to net the winner. In the shootout Mikhail Grigorenko scored the only goal of five shooters to give Buffalo a 5-4 win.
