Despite racking up a franchise record 20 penalties, the Jets outlasted the Bills on Sunday 27-20. New York did manage 513 yards of total offense, including 331 through the air by Geno Smith. His rookie counterpart, EJ Manuel managed 243 yards and went 19 of 41.
The Jets took the early 7-0 lead after going 80 yards on the opening drive of the game. Smith converted a couple of big 3rd down passes and capped the drive by scampering 8 yards to the end zone. Buffalo got on the board 1:12 into the second quarter thanks to a 37-yard field goal by Dan Carpenter. Fred Jackson put the Bills deep in Jets territory earlier in the drive with a 59-yard run, but Buffalo could only manage the three points.
Carpenter's second field goal of the game came just minutes later following a Jim Leonhard interception on a deep attempt for Smith. The field goal cut the deficit to one before Smith found Stephen Hill along the sideline for a 51-yard scoring strike, putting the Jets up 14-6. Hit hard by Kyle Williams as he threw, Smith lofted the ball to the wide open Hill, who beat Justin Rogers for his first touchdown of the season.
After a pair of Nick Folk field goals, Carpenter added his third of the day, a 43-yarder, to make the score 20-9. Moments later, Kiko Alonso stepped in front of a Smith pass for his second interception in as many games. Alonso took the pick 32 yards to the New York 12 yard line, but the Bills offense sputtered once again and settled for Carpenter's fourth field goal of the game to pull within eight.
Buffalo tied it up on Scott Chandler's 33-yard touchdown reception and Stevie Johnson's ensuing two-point conversion. The Bills were aided heavily on the tying drive by four consecutive penalties against New York. Smith and the Jets quickly regained the lead, 27-20, with a 69-yard strike to Santonio Holmes, who beat Justin Rogers down the sideline. The teams traded drives during the final quarter, but the Bills could not capitalize en route to the seven-point loss.
Jackson led all Bills rushers with 72 yards on seven carries while Johnson hauled in six receptions for 86 yards.
Injuries hit the Bills hard throughout the course of the game -- Buffalo lost Marcell Dareus, Leodis McKelvin and CJ Spiller. Alex Carrington was carted off late in the fourth quarter. The Bills fall to 1-2 on the season and will return home to face the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at 1 p.m.
