Sabres Lose in Fight Night in Toronto

Sabres lose 5-3 in a fight filled night in Toronto.

Preseason hockey generally isn't supposed to be memorable but the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs changed all that over the weekend with two very different and entertaining games that will have fans talking for a while. Just one night after the Sabres needed a 15 round shootout to decide a 3-2 win for the Leafs at First Niagara Center, the two teams went at it again at the Air Canada Center in Toronto Sunday in a fight filled battle that the Sabres lost 5-3.

14 fighting majors, 8 misconducts and 3 game misconducts were handed out in the game which was aired on WGR sister station ESPN 1520 with Dan Dunleavy calling the action along with Rob Ray. Even the goaltenders got into it with Ryan Miller and Leafs netminder Jonathan Bernier squaring off with both receiving game misconducts.

It all started with 10 minutes remaining in the game, right after the Sabres Cory Tropp scored to make it 4-3, wiping away the Leafs 4-1 lead. The Leafs 6'5" Jamie Devane battled with the smaller Cory Tropp. That set-off the line brawl and the goalie fight between Miller and Bernier.

"That guy's a big guy, six foot five," said Sabres head coach Ron Rolston. "And (Tropp's) a smaller guy but certainly a battler. So guys weren't happy about it."

Tropp was bloodied by the fight and left the game.

Sabres John Scott  then picked the much smaller  Phil Kessel as his opponent.

Kessel, who had already scored 2 goals and is 6'0" to Scott's 6'8", swung his stick a few times at Scott as several teammates rushed in.

"It was pretty stupid, right? He said he was going to jump me," Kessel said.

"What are you going to do? He's a big boy so if he's coming after me, what are you going to do?"

"(Tropp) was the guy who instigated the fight," said Leafs coach Randy Carlyle when asked about the incident that allegedly left the Sabres upset and sparked Scott to go after Kessel.

"Obviously maybe they felt that was the problem was that there was a bigger man fighting a smaller guy."

Kessel was issued a match penalty for swinging his stick, which means an automatic suspension pending a ruling from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

Even stiffer discipline  could be coming to the Leafs David Clarkson as he could get 10 games for coming off the bench.

As for the goaltenders, Bernier skated out of his crease to go after Miller and the two tangled for a few minutes near the Sabres' blue-line.

Both received game misconducts with Matt Hackett replacing Miller and Drew MacIntyre taking goal for Bernier.

On the scoring side, Sabres defensemen Nikita Zadorov and Jamie McBain scored along with Tropp. In addition to Kessel's two goals, the Leafs also had goals from  Trevor Smith, Josh Leivo and Jake Gardiner.

By the end of the night, the benches on both sides were looking bare after the fighting majors and 10-minute misconducts were handed out. It will be awhile but the two teams next meet, in the regular season, for another home and home - Friday November 15th at FNC and then Saturday November 16th in Toronto.

The Sabres next preseason opponent is the Columbus Blue jackets Wednesday night at FNC with play by play starting at 7 on WGR Sports Radio 550.
