Bills make four roster transactions Monday

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- The Buffalo Bills certainly had a busy Saturday and Sunday in trying to figure out what to do regarding their quarterback situation. The work from the weekend also spilled into Monday with the announcement of four separate transactions.

The Bills added two players to their active roster on Monday. They promoted quarterback Thad Lewis to the active roster and announced he'd be the starting quarterback on Sunday for the injured EJ Manuel. Buffalo also claimed guard Antoine McClain off waivers, after the offensive lineman was released by Oakland.

McClain was an undrafted free agent out of Clemson in 2012, and spent his first season in the league on the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad. He was released, and then signed with the Raiders ahead of the current season before being waived over the weekend.

The 6-foot-5, 336-pound guard has yet to appear in a regular season game during his career.

To make room for both players on the roster, the Bills elected to place rookie kicker Dustin Hopkins on Injured Reserve and also released offensive tackle Sam Young.

Hopkins has been riddled with a groin injury that has kept him out of action since the start of the regular season. Head coach Doug Marrone said they felt as though the sixth-round pick was making progress on field goal attempts, but was way behind schedule on kickoffs.

The Bills have been using Dan Carpenter as their place kicker instead of Hopkins. The rookie originally beat out long-time Buffalo kicker Rian Lindell for the full-time job in training camp.

Young has been with the Bills since September of 2011, having been claimed by Buffalo after his release from the Dallas Cowboys. A reserve lineman, he's been active in 20 games over the past three seasons and made four starts.

Young was inactive for the first time this season on Thursday night in Cleveland.
