Blackhawks Hang On For 2-1 Win Over Sabres
A late surge by the Sabres wasn't enough on Saturday during a 2-1 loss to the Blackhawks. Drew Stafford pulled Buffalo to within a goal -- part of a 13-shot final period -- but Chicago hung on for the win.
Ben Smith deflected a Brent Seabrook shot past a heavily screened Ryan Miller to open the scoring at 9:26 of the first. Chicago maintained its one-goal lead until 19:35 of the second when Patrick Kane, with the Blackhawks on a power play, ripped a one-timer into the Buffalo net.
Both teams had their fair share of scoring chances prior to Kane's goal. Cody Hodgson missed the net on a one-time chance while Thomas Vanek was stoned by Crawford following a 2-on-1 break. Later in the period, Kane stole the puck from Ehrhoff, but was denied on the breakaway opportunity by Miller.
Stafford cut the Chicago lead in half with 8:11 remaining in regulation, but Corey Crawford stood tall the rest of the way and the Blackhawks prevailed 2-1. Crawford finished with 28 saves while Miller stopped 38 for Buffalo. The Sabres (0-5-1) are back home on Monday to host the Minnesota Wild at 7:30 p.m.
