Pominville haunts Sabres, Wild win 2-1

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550)  -- Welcome once again into the Ted Darling Memorial Press Box, where the Buffalo Sabres look to avoid a historicly bad start to the season as they welcome in the Minnesota Wild for their only regular season visit to town.

Tonight marks the return of former Jason Pominville to First Niagara Center after being dealt at last year's trade deadline. The former Sabres captain should get a nice reception for those inside of the arena tonight. For more from Pominville, click here for Paul Hamilton's pregame primer. For the blue and gold, Henrik Tallinder is back from injury, while Mike Weber will skate after being benched for a game. Alexander Sulzer was returned to Rochester, while Rasmus Ristolainen will be a scratch.

Be sure to add your thoughts in the thread below. I will add my two cents, in between the scoring plays as well. And for more, give myself and Brian Koziol a follow on Twitter: @PatWGR and @BrianWGR.

First Period

17:25 - I hope the Sabres in-arena presentation staff takes one of the media timeouts to recognize Jason Pominville tonight. Would be a very classy thing to do.

14:37 - WILD GOAL. Kyle Brodziak slips a low-lying wrister along the ice and Jhonas Enroth is not able to stop it for the first goal of the night. Matt Cooke laid a nice pass on the forward's stick to initiate the play. 1-0 MIN.

11:52 - The blue and gold are not able to capitalize on Matt Dumba's minor penalty right after Minnesota's goal. Thomas Vanek was behind the defense on an outlet rush, but had the puck deflect off of his skate and away from him. Otherwise, he would have had a clear cut breakaway on the PP.

8:33 - Cody McCormick and Clayton Stoner go toe-to-toe and unleash a few bombs to get the crowd going here. Stoner is busted up, with some blood coming out of his nose after that bout, and has gone to the dressing room for repairs.

7:47 - More often then not the Sabres manage to botch a 2-on-1 chance on the defensive end, and this time they do so while trying to score. Vanek makes one too many passes with Cody Hodgson on the other side. Vanek's pass back across ice was broken up by a sprawling WIld defenseman.

2:50 - Shots on goal are 5-4, Minnesota. However, I do not think Buffalo has allowed a chance 10+ minutes ago.

End of Period

Goal Summary

BUF: none
MIN: 5:23 - Kyle Brodziak (1) (Matt Cooke, Jonas Brodin)

Penalty Summary

BUF: 11:27 - Cody McCormick (5 min., fighting)
MIN: 5:40 - Matt Dumba (2 min., interference). 11:27 - Clayton Stoner (5 min., fighting). 12:13 - Dany Heatley (2 min., tripping)

Shots on Goal

BUF - 5, MIN  - 6

Second Period

20:00  - There has been a lengthy delay of more than 10 minutes due to a problem with the lights. They were dimmed to help resurface the ice, but have failed to fully illuminate. What a microcosm of the Sabres season so far.

18:49The sabres have the fresher of the legs to start and are buzzing around Harding. Tyler Ennis and Drew Stafford created some offense around the net, and a nifty set of hands on Mark Pysyk nearly tied the game up.

7:25 - Third power play of the night for the blue and gold thanks to a Zach Parise minor. We shall see if it yields the game tying goal.

5:50 - The boo birds were out late in the man advantage as Buffalo failed to get any offense going whatsoever. Not a banner PP for the Sabres on a night where, again, they are failing to get any good sustained pressure on the opponent.

4:56 - SABRES GOAL. Brian Flynn made the most of a very nice rebound chance kicked out by Josh Harding to tie the game at 1. Zemgus Girgensons made a nice pass to the slot, where Flynn was waiting, took the initial shot and followed up with a flick of the wrists that went over Harding and in. 1-1 tie.

:05.2 - WILD GOAL. There it is...Jason Pominville scores a beautiful touch goal and beats Enroth to give Minnesota their second lead of the game. More boos and indifference than cheers when he scored. 2-1 MIN

End of Period

Goal Summary

BUF: 15:04 - Brian Flynn (1) (Zemgus Girgensons)
MIN: 19:50 - Jason Pominville (2) PPG (Mikko Koivu, Jared Spurgeon)

Penalty Summary

BUF: 17:51 - Drew Stafford (2 min., tripping)
MIN: 11:31 - Zach Parise (2 min., holding the stick)

Shots on Goal

BUF - 12 (17), MIN - 8 (14)

Third Period

17:33 - Over the first couple of shifts this period not a whole ton of action at either end. With a true day off yesterday I expect the Sabres to have good legs this period. We will see if that results in any chances on Harding, or if they wilt down the stretch.

13:50 - Buffalo will go to the power play thanks to a Clayton Stoner minor. Maybe this power play will be better than the previous ones?

10:02 - Big penalty kill coming up for the hometown team as Henrik Tallinder has taken a minor for high sticking. If Minnesota converts again, it could effectively by game over.

4:58 - Final media timeout of the game, and it has been a ho-hum period. Buffalo has been stuck on five shots for a very long time now.

End of Game

Goal Summary

BUF: none
MIN: none

Penalty Summary

BUF: 9:58 - Henrik Tallinder (2 min., high sticking). 12:56 - Team (2 min., too many men on the ice)
MIN: 6:10 - Clayton Stoner (2 min., roughing)

Shots on Goal

BUF - 6 (23), MIN - 6 (20)

Final Thoughts

The Buffalo Sabres have now tied the franchise mark for the longest winless streak to start the season with an 0-6-1 record. Tonight was a night where they recorded more shots on goal than they gave up, and that should be a recipe for a victory. There is not much time to sulk or work on what ails this team, they are back at it tomorrow night against the New York Islanders. The puck drops at 7 o'clock from Long Island. Pregame coverage starts at six p.m. on the flagship home of the Sabres Radio Network - WGR Sports Radio 550.

If report of Toronto bid being maxed out at $1.2 billion is true, what would you think?
Toronto is dead. The Buffalo Bills are here to stay!!!!
I'd still be guarded. What if a bidder comes out of nowhere?
