Roberto Luongo turned aside 25 shots on Thursday, helping lift the Canucks to a 3-0 win over the Sabres. Buffalo falls to 1-7-1 on the year. Head inside for more.
The Canucks jumped on the Sabres early, pelting Ryan Miller with shots right out of the gate. Vancouver outshot Buffalo 8-0 less than two minutes in and finally scored on shot number 16 of the opening period. Chris Higgins took advantage of a Sabres turnover in front of Miller and snapped the puck into the net.
Vancouver made it 2-0 at 11:05 of the second period with a Brad Richardson shorthanded goal. The initial shot by Jason Garrison deflected off Mark Pysyk's stick. Richardson was there to tap the puck in mid-air, sending it past Miller for a two-goal lead. For a moment early in the third, it appeared Thomas Vanek cut the lead in half, roofing a shot over Luongo's glove. The on-ice goal call was reversed, however, after replays showed the puck hit the crossbar and the post without ever actually crossing the goalline.
The Canucks went up by three following Ryan Stanton's first-ever NHL goal about halfway through the final period, sending most of the First Niagara Center crowd toward the exits. Buffalo is back at home on Saturday, hosting Patrick Roy and the Colorado Avalanche at 7 p.m. Hear the call on WGR 550.
