Bruins pull away with 5-2 win over Sabres

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550)  -- Welcome once again into the Ted Darling Memorial Press Box. The Buffalo Sabres have had some time to digest their home loss on Saturday, and host the Boston Bruins. The two teams are meeting in what the NBC Sports Network has dubbed "Rivalry Night."

Ryan Miller is back in between the pipes for the blue and gold, and Rasmus Ristolainen has been recalled to Buffalo since Saturday. Nakita Zadorov will remain in the Sabres lineup after an impressive NHL debut against the Colorado Avalanche. The rookie was paired with Mike Weber during the team's morning skate. For more from the morning, take a look at Paul Hamilton's pregame primer by clicking here

Be sure to add your thoughts on the game in the thread below. I will add my two cents in between scoring plays as well. And be sure to give myself and Brian Koziol a follow on Twitter: @PatWGR and @BrianWGR.

First Period

19:42 - The Buffalo Sabres record the first shot on goal, and what fans that are in their seats give the hometown team a bronx cheer. There are a ton of empty seats as this "rivalry game" gets underway.

13:27 - I have to be cautious, but the first two shifts of the night for Mikhail Grigorenko have been good. He backchecked to cover the front of the net and was able to clear the puck in his own end, and helped lead a rush into the Bruins zone at the other end.

14:11 - Loui Eriksson is hurt after John Scott delivered an elbow to the jaw of the forward. Scott was given a major penalty, and rightfully so. Zdeno Chara was fuming, shouting at Scott from inside of the referee's circle at the timekeeper's box. It is officially a charging major for Scott.

11:20 - Ryan Miller bails out Zadorov with a huge save of a wide open Bruins forward at the side of the net. Miller was able to slide his left pad across the crease and keep the puck out. There was a brief review by the war room in Toronto to confirm that the puck did not cross the goal line.

8:59 - BRUINS GOAL. Jarome Iginla's shot from the slot goes through the pads of Ryan Miller and juuuuust sneaks across the goal line to give Boston the lead. That may be the first goal of the year I think 100%, without a doubt the netminder should have stopped. 1-0 BOS.

5:20 - Milan Lucic has been credited with the first goal of the game. Iginla and David Krejci received assists.

End of Period

Goal Summary

BUF: none
BOS: 11:01 - Milan Lucic (4) (Jarome Iginla, David Krejci)

Penalty Summary

BUF: none
BOS: Carl Soderberg (2 min., goaltender interference)

Shots on Goal

BUF - 6, BOS - 7

Second Period

19:20 - BRUINS GOAL. Milan Lucic picks up his second goal as he is able to outmuscle Mark Pysyk driving to the front of the net. It was a pass threaded by Jarome Iginla that Lucic stretched out for and was able to chip home. 2-0 BOS

16:59 - Boston will have a two-man advantage for the next :57 or less thanks to a Henrik Tallinder high stick, followed by a Kevin Porter boarding minor. The B's can put the potentially put the game away now.

15:40 - Buffalo is able to survive the penalty kill unscathed. First the blue and gold killed off the rest of the Tallinder minor, then David Krejci canceled out what was left of Porter's penalty with a high sticking minor of his own.

13:59 - Not the best of sequences for the Sabres on the PP. First, Shawn Thornton is able to break to the Buffalo net while three Sabres are collapsing in their own zone. Then the other way Cody Hodgson had too much speed for his own good and coughed up the puck just inside of the blue line. The Sabres power plays have yielded as many chances for the B's as they have Buffalo.

11:39 - SABRES GOAL. Remember the old addage "go to the net and good things happen."? That is exactly what Cody Hodgson did and Thomas Vanek put the puck in the right spot. The puck goes off of the skate of Hodgson and Buffalo is right back in this game. 2-1 BOS.

8:10 - BRUINS GOAL. Again the Sabres fail to play any real defense in front of Miller and Dougie Hamilton is able to pocket his second goal of the season. It was a nice pass by Brad Marchand, but Mike Weber did not do a good job of cutting off the pass. 3-1 BOS.

4:40 - SABRES GOAL. A good face-off win for the Sabres in the offensive zone gets the puck back to Nakita Zadorov. The rookie pinches down from his spot on the blue line and beats Chad Johnson for the goal. What a beautiful sequence by the youngster to bring Buffalo back within a goal. 3-2 BOS.

End of Period

Goal Summary

BUF: 8:21 - Cody Hodgson (3) PPG (Thomas Vanek, Marcus Foligno). 15:10 - Nakita Zadorov (1) (Steve Ott, Marcus Foligno).
BOS: 0:50 - Milan Lucic (4) (Jarome Iginla). 11:50 - Dougie Hamilton (2) (Brad Marchand, Carl Soderberg).

Penalty Summary

BUF: 1:58 - Henrik Tallinder (2 min., high sticking). 3:01 - Kevin Porter (2 min., boarding).
BOS: 4:20 - David Krejci (2 min., high sticking). 7:38 - Team (2 min., too many men on the ice).

Shots on Goal

BUF - 9 (15), BOS - 14 (21)

Third Period

15:43 - BRUINS GOAL. Torey Krug simply spins around and slings the puck at the Sabres goal. Miller is not able to stop the shot and Buffalo is back trailing by a pair. Not a good start to the period for the blue and gold. 4-2 BOS

10:18 - BRUINS GOAL. The B's capitalize on the major penalty to John Scott for an elbow to the head of Loui Eriksson. Zdeno Chara was shouting at Scott from the timekeepr's box before Scott was sent to the locker room. 5-2 BOS

6:22 - This period has been all Boston. The Bruins lead in the shots on goal department by an 11-1 margain.

4:22 - I have had one or two people tweet me that they do not think Scott's hit was that bad. People...elbow to the jaw, Loui Eriksson had to be helped to the bench by two teammates. It is OK to admit that a Sabres player did something wrong. He deserves 10 games for the hit.

End of Game

Goal Summary

BUF: none
BOS: 4:17 - Torey Krug (2) (Reilly Smith, Carl Soderberg). 9:42 - Torey Krug (3) PPG (David Krejci, Milan Lucic).

Penalty Summary

BUF: 2:22 - Johan Larsson (2 min., roughing). 5:49 - John Scott (5 min., match penalty). 5:49 - John Scott (5 min., fighting).
BOS: 2:22 - Chris Kelly (2 min., roughing). 5:49 - Adam McQuaid (2 min., instigator). 5:49 - Adam McQuaid (5 min., fighting). 5:49 - Adam McQuaid (10 min., miscounduct).

Shots on Goal

BUF - 2 (16), BOS - 13 (34)

Final Thoughts

Usually it is the first period that the Sabres do not show up in. Tonight it was the third period with the team outshot 13-2, and no life shown in the final twenty minutes. Add in the John Scott hit and it was not a banner night for the blue and gold once again tonight. A couple of days off should have meant a more complete effort, but once again Ryan Miller was the only one that came prepared to play the whole way. Sure, he let in a soft goal on Torey Krug's first one but on 34 shots if I can only take issue with one of them he had a good night by my standards. Next up is a short two-game road trip to Florida starting Friday night against the Florida Panthers. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. on the flagship home of the Sabres Radio Network - WGR Sports Radio 550. Pregame coverage with Mike Schopp and the Bulldog begins at 6:30 p.m.
