Bills release cornerback

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- With running back C.J. Spiller looking more and more likely to miss Sunday's game due to an ankle injury, the Buffalo Bills have opened up a spot on the roster. The team announced that they have released cornerback Brandon Burton from the 53-man roster.

The Bills initially claimed Burton off waivers from Minnesota after the wave of final cuts across the National Football League, signing him to a contract on September 1, 2013. Due to a high number of injuries at the position, Burton appeared in the first five games of the season for the Bills, mostly in a special teams role.

The past two weeks, however, Burton has been among the team's inactives on game day.

With his release, the Bills now have an open roster that may be used to help the team fill the Sunday void of not being able to use Spiller, who did not participate in practice once again on Friday. Head coach Doug Marrone hinted throughout the week that they may make a move to get practice squad running back Ronnie Wingo on the active roster if Spiller could not play.

The Bills take on the New Orleans Saints on the road Sunday.
