Bills' Spiller has a high ankle sprain

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- The Buffalo Bills finally made the decision to give running back C.J. Spiller the day off when they took on the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Not only is his status unclear for their upcoming contest, but the nature of his injury was revealed.

"It's a high ankle [sprain]," head coach Doug Marrone told reporters on Monday. "It's like a spot that's sore, but it is a high ankle which is normally a little bit worse than the other ones."

Since suffering the injury in the team's Week Four contest against Baltimore, Spiller has been limited over the course of the past four games. Through the first three weeks the running back took only 20.7-percent of offensive snaps, and then was ultimately held out by the Bills against the Saints.

Marrone said the Bills will test out Spiller's ankle either Monday or Tuesday, but was hesitant in giving a firm statement about his availability against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

"I'm gonna wait," Marrone said when talking about both Spiller and linebacker Manny Lawson.

Lawson was held out for the first time this season due to a hamstring injury, but Marrone said the team's free agent acquisition felt good to the point where he thought he might be able to play against the Saints on Sunday.

A pair of wide receivers are expected to be limited as the practice week opens up on Wednesday. Stevie Johnson suffered a hip flexor injury on his first reception of the game and spent the rest of the afternoon trying to stretch it out in between plays and series.

Rookie Marquise Goodwin isn't likely to get a full day of work in on Wednesday either. He injured his elbow in the second half and was in considerable pain when being checked on by trainers. The Bills carted him off the field to be examined, but X-rays came back negative.

The Bills will be up against the Chiefs at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sunday, who sport the league's only undefeated record (8-0).
