Bills list QB Lewis as doubtful vs. Chiefs

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550)  -- The Buffalo Bills finally got quarterback Thad Lewis back on the practice field on Friday in Orchard Park, but it wasn't enough to convince head coach Doug Marrone just yet that he would be able to start.

Following the session, Marrone officially designated Lewis as doubtful for Sunday's home contest against the Kansas City Chiefs. The quarterback has been dealing with sore ribs since the Bills' 35-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

"Really with Thad, we're really going to take a good look later on this afternoon," the head coach said Friday. "It's just to see where he is, really. We're going to have discussions this afternoon and tomorrow, if Thad can't go -- which quarterback gives us the best chance to win. So that's really not finalized in our minds. Those discussions will be myself, Nathaniel Hackett and Doug Whaley in what we're doing."

At it's core, the 'doubtful' tag means the player has no more than a 25-percent chance to play in the upcoming game. But Marrone still left the window open for Lewis to come back and play.

"Really just being able to turn and throw is the one thing," he said. "And that's the one thing that's holding him back is begin able to turn his torso and throw… and that's it. If he can get by that, then he'll be able to play."

Throughout the week, Marrone had said how Lewis does at practice on Friday would help determine whether or not he would play on Sunday. After not doing much, the coach left himself some wiggle room if the quarterback can turn it around over the weekend.

"He did not practice and throw the football all the way up until Friday at this time," Marrone said. "He may throw the football [Friday] afternoon and may throw it two training sessions [Saturday] and have one pre game. So I think we can catch him up to do that."

If Lewis cannot play, it will either be undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel or veteran Matt Flynn getting the start under center. Marrone admitted that Tuel had gotten the majority of the first-team repetitions during Friday's practice.

The Bills also released the rest of their injury report. Quarterback EJ Manuel (knee) has been ruled out of this weekend's game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Wide receiver Chris Hogan (back) is questionable.

Running back C.J. Spiller (ankle), running back Fred Jackson (knee), linebacker Manny Lawson (hamstring), defensive lineman Kyle Williams (Achilles), defensive end Mario Williams (hip), wide receiver Stevie Johnson (hip flexor), right guard Kraig Urbik (knee), wide receiver Marquise Goodwin (elbow) and cornerback Brandon Smith (illness) are all probable.

The Bills and the Chiefs square off at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sunday at 1 pm.
