Sabres Stun Sharks in SO 5-4

Cody Hodgson picked up two assists and notched the shootout winner, lifting the Sabres to an upset win over the Sharks on Tuesday 5-4. Drew Stafford, Tyler Ennis and Zemgus Girgensons also recorded two-point nights for Buffalo. Ryan Miller stopped 47 saves in the win.

Martin Havlat opened the scoring at 8:48 of the opening period with his first goal of the season. Havlat backhanded a Patrick Marleau rebound past Miller, putting San Jose ahead early 1-0. Buffalo evened the score 2:36 into the second frame on a Stafford goal. The Sabres forward slipped the puck between Antti Niemi's pads to tie things up 1-1.

Moments later, Cody McCormick put Buffalo ahead with his first goal of the season. Taking a pass from Stafford, McCormick snapped a shot into the Sharks net, giving the Sabres a 2-1 advantage. Ennis made it 3-1 early in the third on a power play opportunity. Streaking to the net with Hodgson on a 2-on-0 break, Ennis one-timed a pass past Niemi for his second goal of the season.

Just 1:59 later, San Jose made it 3-2 when a diving Tyler Kennedy shoveled home a Marc-Edouard Vlasic rebound. Only 1:10 after Kennedy's goal, Tomas Hertl tied the score 3-3 with his wrap-around chance. Buffalo took the lead right back about three minutes later on Henrik Tallinder's second of the year. Tallinder capped a flurry of activity in front of the Sharks net, blasting the puck past Niemi and putting the Sabres ahead 4-3 with 12:32 to play. Tommy Wingels' game-tying goal came at 16:14 of the final frame, ultimately sending the game to overtime.

In OT, replays appeared to show a goal for San Jose however, the play was not reviewed and the two sides skated to a shootout.

Logan Couture and Matt Moulson opened the shootout with goals for their respective teams before Hodgson picked up the game-winner in the fourth round. The Sabres improve to 3-13-1 on the year while San Jose falls to 10-1-4. Buffalo's California road swing continues on Thursday in Los Angeles. The Sabres and Kings will faceoff 10:30 p.m. Hear the call with Dan Dunleavy and Rob Ray on WGR 550.

What do you know about the Bills?
  I've seen enough. I know they're a playoff team
Not enough. 4 games with Orton is too small a sample size
I won't know about them until they play the top teams in December
