Sabres beat Kings in shootout 3-2

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550)  -- Welcome once again into the Ted Darling Memorial Press Box, high atop ice level at First Niagara Center. The Buffalo Sabreas return home from their three-game west coast road trip that saw the team go 1-2-0, including a 2-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. LA is in town for their only regular season appearance of the 2013-14 regular season.

Ville Leino is back in the lineup for the blue and gold after being a healhty scratch last game against the Anaheim Ducks. Ryan Miller is back between the pipes for Buffalo tonight as well. For more from Paul Hamilton's pregame skate primer, including comments from Leino and the healthy scratches click here

Be sure to comment in the thread below, while I add my two cents in between scoring plays. Also, do not forget to give myself and Brian Koziol a follow on Twitter: @PatWGR and @BrianWGR.

First Period

18:43 - KINGS GOAL. Well, of all of the bounces the Kings get the first break on a puck that skipped off of a stick and over Ryan Miller. Justin Williams is credited with the goal. 1-0 LA.

15:57 - The Sabres game presentation crew did a great job honoring all veterans in attendace at tonight's game. The pregame ceremony also welcomed the 107th Airwing home from their deployment to Afghanistan.

8:38 - The Kings are dominating play so far. Shots on goal are 9-1, and the one Buffalo shot was a weak wrister from the perimeter that Jonathan Quick was able to corral for a whistle.

7:53 - One again Ryan Miller is up to the task on a nice rebound attempt Matt Frattin to keep the score 1-0 LA. The forward bckhanded the puck to the net but Miller was able to get across the crease in time.

6:28 - Slava Voynov threw himself in front of a Sabres' shot towards the net and denied the blue and gold the game-tying goal on the power play. Jake Muzzin is in the box for high sticking.

End of Period

Goal Summary

BUF: none
LA: 1:17 - Justin Williams (7) (Slava Voynov)

Penalty Summary

BUF: none
LA: 13:00 - Jake Muzzin (2 min., high sticking)

Shots on Goal

BUF - 4, LA - 15

Second Period

17:16 - If you have not seen it, or heard it mentioned tonight RJ has joined Rob Ray in between the benches and is calling the game from ice level. Rick is wearing a helmet and shield in between the benches and nearly got caught by a tipped puck to start this period.

14:10 - From reading several national beat reporters reports, hybrid icing was on the agenda and I love it. It is a welcomed change to the game that is for player safety, and also speeds up the game ever so slightly.

11:59 - Christian Ehrhoff is in the penalty box for delay of game, and the Kings are buzzing. Feels like they will get their second goal soon.

7:14 - SABRES GOAL. A very nice passing sequence on a quick 3-on-2 chance gives Cody Hodgson a goal that ties the game at 1. Steve Ott passed up his shot, and laid a beautiful pass across the ice where Hodgson tapped it home on an empty net. It was just the second shot of the period for Buffalo. 1-1 tie.

End of Period

Goal Summary

BUF: 12:46 - Cody Hogdson (6) (Steve Ott, Matt Moulson)
LA: none

Penalty Summary

BUF: 7:16 - Christian Ehrhoff (2 min., delay of game). 18:39 - Cody Hodgson (2 min., hooking).
LA: none

Shots on Goal

BUF - 3 (7), LA - 15 (30)

Third Period

16:26 - Williams in the box for two or less. Good chance to put the Kings in a hole despite being outchanced.

15:43 - SABRES GOAL. Cody Hodgson does it again tonight, and Buffalo has a lead despite being outchanced and outshot in the game. This is one of those nights where Miller has been good enough, and now the offense is doing its part. The score came on the power play. 2-1 BUF.

9:24 - Just a little more than halfway through the final period and Buffalo was able to kill off a bad penalty call on Ott, and still hold all the momentum of the frame.

6:38 - The home fans have to be happy that the Sabres did not get the doors blown off in the first period. Instead, LA could not get more than one goal in the opening twenty minutes and they are paying for it.

3:34 - KINGS GOAL. Another crazy bounce goes against Buffalo and this game is tied. Henrik Tallinder did not help the cause with a weak effort in front of the net. 2-2 tie.

End of Regulation

Goal Summary

BUF: 4:26 - Cody Hodgson (7) PPG (Tyler Ennis, Matt Moulson)
LA: 16:26 - Dwight King (5) (Tyler Tiffoli, Mike Richards)

Penalty Summary

BUF: 6:41 - Steve Ott (2 min., boarding). 19:22 - Drew Stafford (2 min., slashing).
LA: 3:34 - Justin Williams (2 min., hooking)

Shots on Goal

BUF - 9 (16), LA - 12 (42)

Overtime

3:35 - No damage done on Drew Stafford's minor late in the third. LA moved the puck well at times 4-on-3, but did not get a real good shot off.

2:00 - Los Angeles is slow and tired. Too bad the Sabres cannot take advantage.

1:10 - Quick injured on the last play, Ben Scrivens is now in goal for LA.

Buffalo 3, Los Angeles 2 FINAL/SO

Final Thoughts

Tonight was all about Ryan Miller. The Sabres netminder was dominant in between the pipes, and made big saves when he had to while just doing his job on the routine chances. A couple of bad bounces coupled with shoddy defensive play in their own zone helped LA get their two goals, but in a shootout Buffalo was able to score twice for the win. Next up is a home-and-home weekend series with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The first game in the series is Friday night in downtown Buffalo. The puck drops just after seven o'clock on the flagship home of the Sabres Radio Network - WGR Sports Radio 550. Pregame with Mike Schopp and the Bulldog begins at 6 p.m.
