Sabres Edge Kings in Shootout 3-2

For the first time this season, the Sabres skated off the ice at First Niagara Center as winners. Despite being outshot 45-17, Buffalo picked up a 3-2 shootout victory over the Kings. Cody Hodgson scored both regulation goals.

It didn't take long for the Kings to grab the 1-0 lead. Justin Williams deflected a blue line shot into the Sabres net just 1:17 into the opening period. Buffalo found itself down by only a goal heading into the second period despite trailing in shots 15-4.

The Sabres' sixth shot of the game turned out to be the tying goal, a tap-in for Cody Hodgson off a nice feed from Steve Ott. Hodgson's second of the evening came 4:26 into the final period on the power play. The Buffalo forward went to the net and stuffed in a pass from Tyler Ennis, putting his team up 2-1. Dwight King tied it 2-2, swatting a rebound past Ryan Miller with 3:34 left in regulation.

Los Angeles twice found itself with an extra skater in overtime -- Drew Stafford went for slashing late in regulation and Christian Ehrhoff took a hooking penalty in OT -- but couldn't take advantage of either opportunity. The Kings lost their starting goaltender late in the extra frame; Jonathan Quick had to be helped off the ice and was replaced by Ben Scrivens.

The first shot Scrivens faced came in the shootout, a blocker-side goal by Matt Moulson. Miller stoned both Kings shooters -- Mike Richards and Trevor Lewis -- and Ennis beat Scrivens on his chance, giving Buffalo the 3-2 victory.

Miller was given first star honors for his 43-save effort while Quick stopped 15 of 17 shots for Los Angeles.

The Sabres return to action Friday night at First Niagara Center against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Hear the call on WGR 550 with Rick Jeanneret and Rob Ray.
