Bills restore the faith

Hey, do what you think is right as it pertains to the Bills playoff chances.  CBS had them as the last team listed on their "In The Hunt" graphic before the game with the Jets.  With a win in their pocket over the team that went into play holding the 6th seed in the AFC, there is no way the Bills are out of the hunt if indeed they were even in it in the first place.

Here's where they stand at 4-7 with a bye this coming week.  The Jets are now 5-5 and at Baltimore next Sunday.  Nobody else "In The Hunt" is better than 5-5.  The Bills are right in the soft underbelly of their schedule.  After the bye they play Atlanta in Toronto followed by back to back road games in Tampa and Jacksonville. Of course the Jets could win their game, as could the rest of the group of teams around .500, while the Bills are resting.

However you want to look at it, the Bills aren't exactly in great shape, but they're not dead either.  What they are is a 4-7 football team with a lot of key people in their first seasons here.  The win over the Jets should at least help fans recover from some of the damage done last week watching the Bills lay an egg in Pittsburgh.

Rookie quarterback EJ Manuel rebounded from his worst game with a very good performance in windy conditions.  The high point? Back to back long passes to T.J. Graham for 40 yards and 43 yards and a score to Marquise Goodwin.  The Goodwin play was a beauty as Manuel threw it out there and Goodwin just ran away from Antonio Cromartie.  Those two throws came on the drive after the Jets had converted a bobbled snap and 1 yard punt by Brian Moorman into their first points of the day.  If you were worried about momentum swinging to the Jets at 20-7, Manuel took care of that with those two throws.

Manuel's rookie counterpart, Geno Smith did not have a very good day at all.  As the 4th quarter started, Smith was 8-23 for 103 yards and 3 interceptions.  He had also been sacked 4 times.  He was replaced by Matt Simms at that point.  For what it's worth, I think most Bills fans would've have told you they thought Smith was having the better year before this game.  He certainly got the better of the matchup the first time these two teams met and the Jets did come into the game with a winning record.

Manuel killed Smith on Sunday.  What does it mean?  The truth is that both guys have a ways to go before we really know whether they are franchise QB's.  For now, we can at least stop worrying that the Bills picked the wrong guy when they passed on Smith and took Manuel in the first round last April.

So depending on how you like to do it, you can have some fun with the standings here for a little while and decide for yourself just how "In The Hunt" the Bills really are.  What I know is this.  For a couple of weeks at least, I won't have to worry nearly as much whether or not the Bills need to be "In The Hunt" for a quarterback next April.
