A third-period power play goal by Johan Franzen helped carry the Red Wings to a 3-1 win over the Sabres on Sunday at First Niagara Center. The loss marks Buffalo's fourth in a row. Head inside for more.
Buffalo got on the board first thanks to Cody Hodgson's 8th of the season. A Red Wings turnover kept play in the Sabres' end and Hodgson captalized, skating around a sprawling Jonas Gustavsson and tucking the puck over the goal line.
Darren Helm evened the score at 1-1 in the first minute of the second period, spinning and sending a backhand into the Buffalo net while falling to the ice. Steve Ott was awarded a penalty shot about halfway through the second, but his chance trickled wide of the net.
Detroit took the 2-1 lead at 11:43 of the final period on Franzen's power play goal. Taking the feed from Henrik Zetterberg, Franzen's shot sailed past Ryan Miller giving the Red Wings their first lead of the night. Daniel Alfredsson provided insurance with an empty-netter in the game's final minute.
Buffalo was outshot 12-7 during the final period and 34-22 overall. Miller was solid in the loss, stopping 31 shots while Gustavsson made 21 saves. The Sabres are return to action on Wednesday at First Niagara Center against the Montreal Canadiens at 7 p.m. Hear the play by play on WGR 550.
