Montreal got on the board late in the first period thanks to a goal by Alex Galchenyuk. The Canadiens forward deflected a Markov shot into the net, putting his team ahead 1-0. Lars Eller got the play started, coming fast down the wing before finding a wide-open Markov. The Habs struck again with a power play goal in the second when David Desharnais deflected a P.K. Subban point shot past Ryan Miller. Camped out in front of the Buffalo crease, Desharnais was able to a get his stick on Subban's blast, making it 2-0.
Buffalo cut the lead in half on Moulson's ninth goal of the season and first since scoring twice in his Sabres debut. After taking Subban off the puck in the corner, Drew Stafford fed a pass to Moulson who ripped a one-timer into the Montreal net. The Canadiens extended their lead with a late power play goal. Brendan Gallagher sent the puck sailing over Miller's glove at 18:16 of the third period. Markov assisted on the goal, marking his third assist of the evening.
