Sabres' Miller is comparable to Lundqvist

I wonder if Mike Liut, who is Ryan Miller’s agent, placed a call to the Sabres on Wednesday to say something like “Hey, did you see what Henrik Lundqvist  just signed for?”

Lundqvist, who like Miller was in the final year of his contract, won’t be hitting the free agent market.  He’ll be staying with the New York Rangers thanks to a seven year, $59.5 million contract that includes a full no trade clause.

I seriously doubt Miller, who at 33 is two years older than Lundqvist,  will get anywhere near that length or dollar amount but Miller and Lundqvist are pretty good comparables when it comes to their career stats and achievements so at the very least, that deal might drive up Miller’s asking price whether it be here or on the open market.

Miller preceded Lundqvist into the NHL but he didn’t become the Sabres number one goalie until the 2005-2006 season.  That same year was Lundqvist’s first in the NHL but he was the Rangers starter from day one.

Miller has played in 520 games while Lundqvist has been in 531.  Miller has won 274 games and Lundqvist 284.  Miller’s career goals against average is 2.60 but Lundqvist’s is 2.26.  As far as save percentage, Miller is at .915 and Lundqvist is .920.

What about playoffs? This is one area where the native of Sweden has been better.  The Rangers have made the playoffs in seven of King Henrik’s eight seasons on Broadway.  The Miller led Sabres have 4 playoff appearances in that same time frame.

Miller made it as far as the conference finals twice in those four berths.  Lundqvist has been in the third round just once in the Rangers seven playoff visits.

For Miller, his post season goals against is 2.46 and the save percentage is .917.  For Lundqvist its 2.28 and .920.  Miller has won four of the eight series he’s been in while Lundqvist playoff series record stands at 5-7.

Over the seven non lockout seasons in which Miller and Lundqvist have been the top net minder for their club, the Sabres have averaged 98 points while the Rangers are at 96.

Post season honors is another area in which Lundquist has an edge.  He and Miller have both won the Vezina Trophy once but Lundqvist has been a finalist four other times while Miller made it only in 2010.
