Incredible Ending Caps Frozen Frontier Win For Amerks
They came, they froze, they saw a hell of a hockey game.
Over 11,000 at Rochester's Frontier Field witnessed the Rochester Americans defeat the Lake Erie Monsters 5-4 in a shootout. Many of the 11k stuck it out in 18 degree weather to watch the Amerks' wild win.
Captain Matt Ellis - who would be called up to Buffalo after the game - scored the game-winning goal after the Amerks had fallen behind 2-0 in the shootout.
The Amerks nearly won the game in regulation, but allowed the Monsters to tie the game with under one second remaining in regulation.
In the shootout, goalie Matt Hackett, who made 27 saves in the win, allowed the first two shooters to score. But he stopped the next three and Mike Zigomanis and Johan Larsson beat Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard to tie the shootout at 2-2. Hackett stopped Andrew Agozzino and Ellis scored on a wrist shot to give Rochester the win on home field.
Ellis opened the scoring for the Amerks in the fast-paced game. Jerome Gauthier-Leduc, Phil Varone and Colton Gillies also scored for the Amerks.
Here are some of the sights and sounds from the game.
