Flames upend Sabres 2-1 in overtime

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550)  -- Welcome once again inside the Ted Darling Memorial Press Box, high atop ice level at First Niagara Center. This afternoon the Buffalo Sabres are looking for their second straight home victory, after a win here on Tuesday. The Calgary Flames make their one, and only, appreance in downtown Buffalo this regular season.

Earlier this morning the blue and gold recalled Matt Ellis from Rochester of the American Hockey League. That is a very nice move by the team to bring up the captain of the Americans, a guy who has answered the bell every time Buffalo has asked him to. The team did not have a morning skate today, so we will have to wait and see if Ellis cracks Ted Nolan's lineup.

Be sure to comment during the game in the thread below, while I add my two cents in between scoring plays. Also, be sure to give myself and Brian Koziol a follow on Twitter: @BrianWGR and @PatWGR.

First Period

20:00 - Matt Ellis is IN the lineup, while Cody Hodgson is OUT. Hodgson tried to "give it a go" during warmups, but is not able to play.

18:47 - The Sabres go to the man advantage early thanks to a Ladislav Smid pick play on Marcus Foligno. Interference puts the team up for two minutes or less.

12:07 - Buffalo heading back to the penalty kill, but before that Shane O'Brien outmuscles John Scott in the defensive zone. Hard to believe it, but it was a nice play.

6:47 - The Sabres are dominating the period, and lead in shots on goal, but have nothing to show for it. Shots are 7-2, blue and gold.

1:14 - Jiri Hudler is on the box, and Calgary is on the PK once again. That is now the third minor of the period for the visitors.

:17.9 - The Flames have a goal disallowed and Matt Stajan is irate. It was a delayed penalty call on Buffalo, and the Flames had too many men on the ice. That is the reason for the no-goal call.

End of Period

Goal Summary

BUF: none
CGY: none

Penalty Summary

BUF: 3:36 - Brayden McNabb (2 min., interference). 7:53 - John Scott (2 min., interference). 19:42 - Marcus Foligno (2 min., tripping).
CGY: 1:13 - Ladislav Smid (2 min., interference). 5:09 - T.J. Brodie (2 min., holding). 18:01 - Jiri Hudler (2 min., high sticking). 19:42 - TEAM (2 min., too many men on the ice).

Shots on Goal

BUF - 11, CGY - 5

Second Period

17:30 - Let's hope this period has much more excitement than the first. So far, not really. But it is early.

13:43 - Foligno started the period in the penalty box, and he is right back there now for cross checking. Seems like this is the time where Calgary takes advantage of their chance and grabs the lead.

8:59 - Zemgus Girgensons hits the post, and it is the third time they have hit the post in this game.

1:00 - This period is going to end with a whimper.

End of Period

Goal Summary

BUF: none
CGY: none

Penalty Summary

BUF: 6:17 - Marcus Foligno (2 min., cross checking). 11:58 - Marcus Foligno (2 min., holding).
CGY: 4:27 - Matt Stajan (2 min., interference). 18:57 - T.J. Brodie (2 min., hooking).

Shots on Goal

BUF - 8 (19), CGY - 13 (18)

Third Period

15:30 - There have been plenty of contenders for most boring game of the year. I think we have a new leader in the clubhouse.

14:20 - SABRES GOAL. Oh look, someone actually does know how to score. Matt Moulson one times a Zemgus Girgensons pass in front of the net. Karri Ramo slid across the crease, but not in time. One might be enough in this game. 1-0 BUF.

12:02 - A quick glove hand by Jhonas Enroth keeps Buffalo in front. The Flames had a 2-on-1 chance, and Mark Giordano ripped a low shot that Enroth was able to swipe the shot away.

11:41 - FLAMES GOAL. Remember Paul Byron and Chris Bulter? Those were the two players traded to Calgary in the Robyn Regehr deal. Butler feeds the pass to Byron in front. Enroth did not stand a chance. 1-1 tie.

2:09 - I have run out of ways to say this game is boring.

End of Regulation

Goal Summary

BUF: 5:40 - Matt Moulson (11) (Zemgus Girgensons, Christian Ehrhoff)
CGY: 8:19 - Paul Byron (1) (Chris Butler, Mikael Backlund)

Penalty Summary

BUF: none
CGY: none

Shots on Goal

BUF - 8 (27), CGY - 7 (25)

Overtime

4:18 - FLAMES GOAL. Paul Byron helps beat his former team by feeding the puck to Matt Stajan, and Calgary makes quick work of the extra session. Buffalo will walk away with one point. 2-1 CGY.

Goal Summary

BUF: none
CGY: 0:42 - Matt Stajan (6) (Paul Byron)

End of Game

Calgary 2, Buffalo 1 FINAL/OT

Final Thoughts

It really does not matter who is behind the bench for the blue and gold. I am not telling you anything new when I say that the talent is just not there for this to be a winning team. Some teams are better than their records, so to speak, but not this team. This is what Darcy Regier has left the franchise with: plenty of role players, but not a lot of talent. This may have been the most boring game of the season, and the fans inside of the seating bowl had very little to cheer about. Next up for the blue and gold is a home date with the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night. The puck drops at seven o'clock, with pregame coverage starting at 6 p.m. on the flagship home of the Sabres Radio Network - WGR Sports Radio 550.
