Sabres double up Jets 4-2

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550)  -- Welcome once again into the Ted Darling Memorial Press Box, high atop ice level at First Niagara Center. The Buffalo Sabres take to the ice against the Winnipeg Jets following a mini roster shakeup.

Sabres head coach Ted Nolan announced on WGR this morning that Mark Pysyk, Brayden McNabb, and Luke Adam were all headed down to Rochester, while corresponding roster moves would be made. Cody Hodgson is ready to return to the lineup after missing Saturday's tilt. Also, Chad Ruhwedel and Kevin Porter were recalled from the AHL. For more on how those two will factor into tonight's game plan, click here for Paul Hamilton's pregame primer.

Be sure to comment throughout the night in the thread below, and I will add my two cents in between scoring plays. Also, be sure to give Brian Koziol and myself a follow on Twitter for more on non gamedays: @BrianWGR and @PatWGR.

First Period

14:33 - Buffalo already has five shots on goal, but it seems like another night where they will make the opposing goalie look like the best in the world. Brian and Paul's key to the game was score more. Easier said than done, guys.

10:31 - Ex-Sabre Chris Thorburn takes the first penalty of the game, and now Buffalo has a great chance to pickup the first score of the game. Let's see if they can capitalize.

7:31 - Ryan Miller bails out Cody Hodgson after a bad pass in front of the Winnipeg net led to a scoring chance the other way. The net minder made a nice poke check to slide the puck away, and there was no damage done. Hodgson needed to shoot in that situation.

3:49 - The Sabres have been all over Winnipeg tonight, dominating the shots on goal and have controlled the puck as well. However, there is nothing to show for their 19-4 edge in shots right now. For the Sabres, they hope a bad bounce does not undo all of the good of this period.

End of Period

Goal Summary

BUF: none
WPG: none

Penalty Summary

BUF: 16:16 - Drew Stafford (2 min., tripping)
WPG: 9:29 - Chris Thorburn (2 min., interference). 11:00 - Tobias Enstrom (2 min., delay of game).

Shots on Goal

BUF - 19, WPG - 7

Second Period

18:58 - JETS GOAL. There it is...just two shots into the second frame Mark Scheifele has the first goal of the game and Winnipeg has the lead. 1-0 WPG.

18:22 - JETS GOAL. Mark Scheifele scores again and what crowd is back in their seats is stunned. The youngster has a pair to give WInnipeg a two-goal lead. 2-0 WPG.

11:03 - My, has this been the tale of two periods or what? The Jets have slowed this one down, Buffalo has obliged, and shots on goal are 6-1 in favor of the visitors this stanza. And they have the only two goals of the period also.

9:44 - SABRES GOAL. Right on cue the Sabres gain the zone, throw the puck to the net, and Steve Ott collects the rebound to score. Credit Drew Stafford with knocking the puck down and on goal, before Ondrej Pavelec kicked the rebound over to the Sabres captain. 2-1 WPG.

7:08 - Ott's goal has really given the blue and gold new life in this game. Buffalo was buzzing around the Jets goal and nearly got the equalizer a couple of times. A much better second half of this period than the start of it.

5:23 - As quickly as the first period went, this second has been the anithesis. Icings, offsides, whistles. This has not been the cleanest of frames.

End of Period

Goal Summary

BUF: 10:16 - Steve Ott (4) (Drew Stafford, Mike Weber)
WPG: 1:02 - Mark Scheifele (5) (Grant Clitsome). 1:38 - Mark Scheifele (6) (unassisted)

Penalty Summary

BUF: none
WPG: 14:59 - Bryan Little (2 min., elbowing)

Shots on Goal

BUF - 5 (24), WPG - 12 (19)

Third Period

19:10 - SABRES GOAL. That did not take long, did it. Cody Hodgson makes a nice move, throws the puck to the front and a crashing Marcus Foligno is able to guide the puck into the net. 2-2 tie.

17:29 - SABRES GOAL. Holy cow. Matt Moulson was standing right by the side of the net when Chrtistian Ehrhoff threw the puck in front, and it is a power play goal. My how quickly the tide can turn. 3-2 BUF.

13:57 - More than six minutes into the period, and just now the Jets record their first shot on goal. This has been good team defense, and some solid offensive zone time for Buffalo in the stanza.

8:16 - After the hot start to the period, the Sabres have cooled off somewhat. Shots on goal are 3-3, but I do not think Winnipeg has had a quality chance yet.

6:22 - SABRES GOAL. Matt Ellis is able to swat the puck out of the air and into the net. The goal was reviewed by Toronto and upheld. 4-2 BUF.

3:58 - Grant Clitsome is not happy with Stafford, and the two wrestle to the ice before the play is blown dead. May some frustrations boiling over for the Jets.

:40.8 - The Jets use their timeout as Pavelec is on the bench with the face-off in the neutral zone.

End of Game

Buffalo 4, Winnipeg 2

Goal Summary

BUF: 0:50 - Marcus Foligno (4) (Cody Hodgson, Tyler Myers). 2:31 - Matt Moulson (12) PPG (Christian Ehrhoff, Tyler Ennis). 13:38 - Matt Ellis (1) (Kevin Porter, Brian Flynn).
WPG: none

Penalty Summary

BUF: 16:02 - Drew Stafford (2 min., roughing)
WPG: 2:11 - Eric O'Dell (2 min., hooking). 16:02 - Grant Clitsome (4 min., roughing)

Shots on Goal

BUF - 7 (31), WPG - 8 (27)

Final Thoughts

The Sabres offense exploded tonight, and really got rewarded after stumbling for just a two to three minute window in that second period. Buffalo was clearly the better team tonight, and not taking anything away from them, Winnipeg looked like a tema that played last night. The blue and gold exploited that, something they have not done very often this year. What a nice exclamation point on the game with Matt Ellis' first goal of the year. The veteran and his linemates all accounted for the game's final score, and they deserved it. Next up is a tough test on Thursday. The Sabres welcome the Boston Bruins to town for a seven o'clock puck drop, with pregame coverage starts at six on the Flagship home the Sabres Radio Network - WGR Sports Radio 550.
