The Sabres looked to end 2013 on a high note, but Al Montoya and the Winnepeg Jets shut out Buffalo 3-0 on New Years Eve.
Both teams had their fair share of chances early in the first period, as Winnipeg and Buffalo each drew penalties (Buffalo had an extended Power Play as Blake Wheeler was called for a double minor), but neither could capitalize. Heading to the second half of the first, Keaton Ellerby seemed to shoot one that was was off net, but Jhonas Enroth apparently redirected the puck trying to stop it to give the Jets and early lead. It looked as though the Sabres tied it up about 4 minutes later as Marcus Foligno knocked one in on a wide open net but the Goal was waived off as Drew Stafford knocked the goalpost over a split second before the puck went in the net. Villie Leino suffered a lower body injury in the first, and would not return for the remainder of the game.
The second frame was played with a much faster pace, but unfortunately for the Sabres, the results were the same. Winnipeg’s Chris Thorburn fed Jacob Trouba for a beautiful one-timer and blew it by Enroth with about seven minutes left in the period.
It was a dull final frame until the final two minutes as Anthony Poluso scored an empty netter, and John Scott was then ejected after the goal for a 10 minute misconduct, which was probably by the referees as Scott looking to hurt someone.
The Sabres go 5-5-2 in the month of December, their first game of 2014 will be this Thursday as they play the Wild in Minnesota.
