Cody Hodgson returned to the ice on Sunday and scored the lone goal in the shootout, giving the Sabres a 2-1 win over the Capitals. Ryan Miller stopped 28 shots, including a highlight reel save late in regulation, and was perfect in the shootout. The victory marked Buffalo's first away from home since November 5th -- a win at San Jose under Ron Rolston.
Washington jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after Brian Flynn, backchecking on Marcus Johansson, tipped a Jason Chimera pass into the Buffalo net. The Sabres responded later in the period with a Tyler Ennis power play goal. Hodgson, playing in his first game since December 19th, helped get the puck to the net and Ennis swooped in to put home the rebound, tying the score 1-1.
The two teams couldn't find the net the rest of the way in regulation, but the Capitals certainly came close. Miller came up with a pair of big saves in the third period, the first on Chimera and the latter an incredible diving stick save on Mikhail Grabovski, keeping the score knotted at one.
Following a scoreless overtime, Miller stopped all three Caps skaters -- including Alex Ovechkin -- and Hodgson found the net in the final round, beating Philipp Grubauer to give Buffalo the victory. The Sabres return home to face the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Hear all the action on WGR 550.
