Blue Jackets Spoil Sabres Comeback with 4-3 SO Win

Playing in his 300th NHL game, Tyler Myers turned in a night to remember, however the Blue Jackets prevailed in the shootout 4-3. The Buffalo defenseman earned first star honors with two goals, including the game-tying tally in the final minute of regulation, in the loss.

Myers found the net in the game's opening minute, giving the Sabres the early 1-0 lead. The Sabres defenseman jumped up into the play, took a nice feed from Matt Moulson and beat Sergei Bobrovsky just inside the far post for his fifth goal of the season. Columbus struck back at the 6:19 mark of the opening period on a slapshot by David Savard, however Buffalo answered almost immediately. Drew Stafford tapped a Tyler Ennis pass into the Blue Jackets net, putting the Sabres back in front 2-1.

Sabres fans have seen some spectacular saves out of both Ryan Miller and Jhonas Enroth over the last week, and Miller provided another on Saturday, denying RJ Umberger with a sprawling glove save on a 2-on-1 break. Later in the period, however, the Blue Jackets beat Miller with a goal courtesy of Matt Calvert. Parked directly in front of the Buffalo crease, Calvert gained possession and sent a backhand rebound past Miller's left pad to even the score at 2-2 just as a Blue Jackets power play expired.

The Sabres appeared to regain the lead 24 seconds into the second period, but the goal was waved off after the officials ruled that Moulson kicked the puck into the net. Columbus went ahead for the first time with a Brandon Dubinsky power play goal at 11:21 of the second. Dubinsky finished off a scramble in front of the Buffalo net, lifting a shot past Miller for the 3-2 lead.

It stayed that way until 19:35 of the final period when Myers' power play wrist shot beat Bobrovsky, tying the score at 3-3. Cody Hodgson sent a crisp cross-ice feed to the Buffalo defenseman who snapped the puck past Bobrovsky's glove, sending to the game to overtime. In the extra period, Myers generated more chances including a scoring opportunity of his own in the closing seconds.

Playing in their second straight shootout, the Sabres failed to solve Bobrovsky as Moulson, Ennis and Hodgson were denied. Miller stopped Cam Atkinson and Mark Letestu before Ryan Johansen won it in the final round. The loss marks Buffalo's third in a row with the last two coming by way of the shootout. The Sabres stay home for a Tuesday evening matchup against the Florida Panthers. Pregame begins at 6 p.m. on WGR 550 with the play by play at 7 p.m.
