(WGR 550) -- With the departure of former defensive coordinator Mike Pettine to the Cleveland Browns last week, there was likely to be some interest in bringing some of his defensive staff members from the Buffalo Bills along with him. Pettine's right hand man, linebackers coach Jim O'Neil, will interview to join the Browns new head coach in Cleveland.
The Bills have granted O'Neil permission to interview for the defensive coordinator position with the Browns, just a few days after they had named Jim Schwartz to Pettine's old post. He is the favorite to land the job in Cleveland according to multiple reports.
O'Neil worked primarily with the pass rushers during his one season in Buffalo and also served as Pettine's point man in the defensive coaches booth to tell him what he was seeing from the press box. He joined the Bills staff after leaving the New York Jets to join Pettine in Buffalo.
If O'Neil's interview were to be successful, it would create a second void on their positional coaching staff. Already without a wide receiver coach, the Bills would have to find a new individual to coach up the linebackers.
Only three other members of the Bills' current defensive staff are connected to either Pettine or O'Neil before their year in Buffalo. The trio consists of defensive line coach Anthony Weaver, assistant defensive backs coach Samson Brown and defensive quality control coach Brian Fleury. None of those three names have requested permission to interview with the Browns just yet.
I think the Bills D would have benefited from some continuity in systems. It would have been great to keep him. Schwartz doesn't seem like a good fit, but it's not like the Bills had a lot of options this late in the game.
It doesn't say much about those other three assistant coaches that Pettine brought to the Bills if he doesn't want to interview them for positions with him at Cleveland.
Well that wasn't a shock!
Instead of talking about if o'neil gets the job or not. Lets focus on who the bills going to get to replace him. I'm sure jim wants somebody he has work with before. And thats the way buffalo are going to go with. So he might come from the lions; which make sense. Ok what about the receiving coach. have they ask the pats to talk to pepper yet or gill byrd? Like i said before congrats to you o'neil for becomming the dc coach of the browns. Ok bills the clock is back on you.
And thats why their gone.
If you listen to coach marrone when he said. Well we let them talk to the browns and one of them just got here a few months. To me that was like saying they weren't do anything anyway. so what did we really lose. The answer nothing remember it was donnie who really teaching our players on the feild. He was the one the coach would tell the press. that donnie was doing a excellent job with the players. And it seem that mike was just taking the credit for his work. If you saw the highlights from the spring practices. wasn't mr donnie with the players at all time. Thats why he didn't leave us. Because he said no i'm going to make my mark right here. Which in the long run is going to land him a head coaching job someday in the nfl. Now that a smart move donnie. In other words he wasn't going to be a yes man to mike. like the rest of them are.
