Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550) -- "We’ll be fast, we’ll be physical, and we’ll attack. We are not going to be a reading defense. There’s going to be a lot of defensive lineman that will be real happy to play in a system like that."
Jim Schwartz, the brand new defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills, didn't take long to hit several of the buzz words that made one-year defensive play-caller Mike Pettine into such a highly-touted man in the minds of many Bills fans.
The Bills introduced Schwartz to the public for the first time since announcing his hiring on Friday evening, just under a month since he was let go as the head coach of the Detroit Lions. Before assuming the position of head coach for the Lions in 2009, he was first a defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans from 2001 through 2008.
In both his stops, his defenses primarily ran a 4-3 base scheme that put a heavy emphasis on their defensive line to win the battles up front and get heat on the quarterback. The Bills ran a multiple defense in 2013 under Pettine, and while Schwartz didn't want to pigeonhole his defense from one of his first days on the job, he did describe how the 2014 defensive unit will go about their business.
"We’re an attack scheme, it’s a scheme built on the guys up front getting after the quarterback. As much as you want to be multi-dimensional with personnel groups, this league comes down to one on one and I think we have some guys that can do that," he said.
"Whatever anybody wants to tag the system as far as a name, it won’t be us. We’re just going to try to do whatever we can every week to do the best to have the game plan. I think the similarities you’ll see is it will be as aggressive as it can be and try to be as physical as we can be and it will be an attack style."
Schwartz was fired by the Lions in early January, a move that was expected considering both the 1-6 finish to the end of 2013 and an overall record of 29-51 in his five seasons there. Following in the footsteps of a few recently released head coaches, the new Bills defensive coordinator heavily deliberated what his next step would be.
"When you’re a head coach and you find yourself on the outside, you want your next opportunity, you want to be very careful about your next opportunity," Schwartz remarked Monday. "I was in this case and I didn’t step in to this opportunity lightly. Not only from the administration here and the ownership and the coaching staff, but also from a player standpoint. This is a tremendous opportunity for a defensive coach."

attacking d is like music to the ear
So if he is going to play that type of defense; then you know you are going to have to draft or trade or pick up line backers. Just like the bills of the 90 were. The good thing about all this is. We don't have one man doing 4 or 5 things at one time. Here is another plus they got a year under their belt with mike system. Now here comes jim and his crew to refine their talents with his. The thing that people forget is once a player learns something; he don;t forgets it. so he use what he has learn to his advantage. The key is when to uses it and when not to. but the thing what i like what jim said; was their will be a lot of man on man. but if you are getting to the qb or you pressure him; You can't compete a pass while you are on your back. And that will be a great defense.
I see a lame D again
Are people nuts or is it just me. How did this line do last time we were a base 4-3. you can call it an attack scheme but it will all depend on the same line up on every play hoping our front four only can get to the quarterback. well we saw what happened two years ago before pettine how that worked it didn't. Marcell and most of our lineman need to be moved around. Pettine had multiple 3-4 4-3 even 2-4 up front and it worked why because you had mario and manny and even jerry standing up moving up and down the line. Not anymore back to four basic lineman in there stance hoping they can get to the qb. I see Brady hanging 50 on this lame 4-3 only D. here's to another 6-10 season. We have a QB who can't hit the water if he fell out of a boat and back to a lame boring to watch D again yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
DID YOU READ THAT LAST COMMENT
Previous DC with C experience
I Like the fact that he not only has HC experience but a lot of DC experience to go with it. I for one think we have a lot of talent on Def. and as long as we got a pretty competent DC we will be fine on Def in 2014. Jim is a good D so I am confident that he will be able to take our players and turn them into a good top 10 Def for 2014. We needone LB to play next to Kiko and many a couple backup upgrades, we need a stud 350lb NT to plug up the middle and who is a good run stopper, we need a good vet for a backupp corner just in case gilmore or Mckelvin gets hurt and I think with that talent there should be no problem being a top 10 defense.
Ready for the ice bowl?
who do you think got the advantage in the ice bowl. Its got to be denver why they are going to know how to play in that cold. I mean they do play in denver. And its just as cold there; like it will be in the ice bowl. I hope that seahawks are prepare because cold bone chilling. And everybody waiting to see if he going to start trash talking. It will be hard to that with your lips stuck together from ice. After the game they are going to be a lot of sick people. I can see the the headlines now The flu take over at the ice bowl. Hey good luck with that one. The ice bowls is not worth me catching the walking death of flu.
I like to hear attack but this sounds like Dave Wannstedt's defense. The front 4 could not win 1 on 1 battles and the defense was bad. Pettine brought a scheme that confused offenses. They didn't know where the pressure was coming from, blitzers came from anywhere. A 4-3 scheme that relies on the front 4 getting heat didn't work in 2012 with many of the same personnel.
Draft L.B. (MACK) From U.B
It would be a great Draft Pick.
First of all this man isn't dave. And thank god for that! And why do you think the 4-3 won't work with more line backers; Which dave didn't have at the time? Didn't the man say we are going to keep somethings the same; and insert some new things to the d. We all know its just on paper for right now. but if you got the players to do it with. then you do it. And when you can get those stay at home type lb like kiko; instead of over running plays and can check whom every come out of that back feild or the line. than you can shut an offense down. What i mean stay at home players is this. one lb will hit what ever comming across the middle. the other lb is there for the running back if he cuts another way or if the qb wants to take off running. because the front four are going to say Oh yea; I'm going to get to the qb. you don't go to the pro bowl for nothing. And long as they know the lb is going to hit any thing that comes after they rush. and the qb dosen't have no one to throw it to. then here comes the screens. Isn't jim one of the best coaches in that area? Did you forget that donnie is still our coach too. Man thats going to be fun to watch. And i want even comment on the lame defense or the dis on ej. All i got to say is watch and learn. EJ is going to make you eat those words. And enough of the jim is like dave comments; the man haven't step on the feild yet so hush! And if you wantto cry to mike and the rest of them. Go to brown.com. And tell them how you feel. the rest of us have move on.
Reply>> To drafting MACK.
Forget it, rumors have it Cleveland will give up their 2nd and 3rd round picks to move up and take Mack? Looks like Johnny football Manziel might be going in the 1st round to the Browns? They have a plan, what are the Bills going to do? LOL
