Capitals win 5-4 in overtime

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550)  -- Welcome once again inside of the Ted Darling Memorial Press Box, high atop ice level at First Niagara Center. The Buffalo Sabres have just a handful of games left before the league-wide Olympic break starts next week. The team welcomes the Washington Capitals to downtown Buffalo.

It is a quick turnaround for the blue and gold, who dropped a 3-0 decision to the Pittsburgh Penguins last night. Jhonas Enroth is expected to get the start in goal for Buffalo. Another change to the lineup comes on the defensive ranks. Alex Sulzer will return to the lineup to replace Jamie McBain. Be sure to comment during the game in the thread below. I will add my thoughts in between scoring plays, and for more opinions be sure to give myself and Brian Koziol a follow on Twitter: @PatWGR and @BrianWGR.

First Period

16:42 - The Sabres send Washington to the power play thanks to a Matt Ellis tripping minor. We will see if Alex Ovechkin has an success against Buffalo's penalty kill. He has not in two games already this season.

16:11 - CAPITALS GOAL. Wow! Alexander Ovechkin still has one of the most lethal shots on goal, and he buries a power play chance right off of the faceoff. Win the draw, and good things happen. 1-0 WAS.

15:18 - CAPITALS GOAL. This one escalated quickly...a turnover in the defensive zone by Christian Ehrhoff, and Mike Green eventually has his shot go in the net. I believe it was tipped on the way past Jhonas Enroth, but it counts none the less. 2-0 WAS.

6:15 - SABRES GOAL - Tyler Ennis creates the chance by throwing the puck at the net, two rebounds later Christian Ehrhoff is chipping the puck over Brayden Holtby, and Buffalo is on the board. That helps make up for the turnover. 2-1 WAS.

4:25 - John Scott and John Erskine have to separated before the whistle, and now the two decide not to drop the gloves. The fans were hoping for a fight.

Second Period

19:08 - Early in the period Dmitry Orlov heads to the penalty box for tripping. Let's see if the Sabres can get the equalizer.

18:19 - SABRES GOAL. Some very good tic-tac-toe passing by Buffalo gives Cody Hodgson a chance at the side of the net, and the forward does not miss on the power play. Matt Moulson and Tyler Ennis helped cycle the puck for the chance. 2-2 tie.

14:19 - Mike Weber was a tad reckless with his stick, clipping Johansson in the face. He will sit for two minutes or less.

12:17 - Ehrhoff nearly picked up his second goal of the night just as Weber was exiting the penalty box. The rear guard unleashed a heavy shot from the blue line and right into the pads of Holtby.

9:50 - CAPITALS GOAL. Mike Green finally picks up his 100th career NHL goal after a wrap around move that Enroth to the far post. It may have gone off of a Sabre in front of the net as well. 3-2 WAS.

8:49 - SABRES GOAL. Phil Varone notches his first career NHL goal as the puck came right to his stick with a wide open net staring him in the face. The AHL veteran earns the goal, and I am sure he will have the puck waiting in his locker after the game. 3-3 tie.

3:03 - CAPITALS GOAL. Another power play goal for the visitors. This time Troy Brouwer is the beneficiary for good passing, and poor defense by Buffalo. All of the defenders on the ice were caught napping. 4-3 WAS.

Final Thoughts

The Sabres were the better team for the second half of the hockey game, but just dug themselves too big of a hole to climb out of in the end. Special teams was a mixed bag. Buffalo was able to convert on one of their chances, but gave up a pair of power play goals against to contribute to the loss. Now the blue and gold will get a temporary reprieve from the wintry weather that has engulfed most of the country. Next up for Buffalo is a Thursday night meeting with the Phoenix Coyotes in the desert. The puck drops just after nine o'clock on the flagship home of the Sabres Radio Network - WGR Sports Radio 550. Pregame coverage begins at 8 p.m.
