Ovechkin, Caps Top Sabres in OT 5-4

Alex Ovechkin scored twice and assisted on Mike Green's game-winning goal in overtime, lifting the Capitals to a 5-4 OT win over the Sabres on Tuesday. Cody Hodgson added two for Buffalo and Phil Varone scored his first NHL goal.

Washington wasted little time in grabbing the early lead. Ovechkin was credited with two goals in less than a minute, the first coming just 3:49 into the game. He stepped into a shot moments after a faceoff to the left of Enroth, sending a rocket into the Buffalo net. The Capitals forward struck again 53 seconds later, deflecting a Mike Green shot past Enroth, making it 2-0.

The Sabres cut the Washington lead in half later in the period on Christian Ehrhoff's fourth goal of the season. Ehrhoff jumped up on the play and jammed home a Matt Moulson rebound to get Buffalo on the board. Cody Hodgson tied it up with a power play goal 1:41 into the second period off a pretty pass from Moulson. Moments later, Ehrhoff nearly gave the Sabres the lead with what would have been his second of the night, but the defenseman ripped a shot off the post.

With Jhonas Enroth caught out of position, Mike Green's wraparound goal gave the Caps a 3-2 lead, but the Sabres struck right back on Phil Varone's first NHL goal. Varone tapped a Marcus Foligno feed past Braden Holtby, knotting the score 3-3. Washington regained the lead later in the period with Henrik Tallinder in the penalty box for hooking. Troy Brouwer took advantage, beating Enroth with a slapshot to put the Capitals up 4-3.

Hodgson's second goal of the night tied it at 6:48 of the third. Hodgson danced through traffic and snapped a shot over Holtby's left shoulder to even the score once again. Green's second goal of the evening came just a minute into overtime, giving the Caps the 5-4 victory. Ovechkin picked up his second assist and fourth point of the evening, sliding the puck over to Green who popped it past Enroth for the win.

The Sabres travel to Phoenix on Thursday to face the Coyotes at 9 p.m. Pregame begins at 8 p.m., followed by the play by play on WGR and the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network.

Do you like the Seattle Seahawks?
Yes. In fact I wish the Bills were just like them.
No. Carroll, Lynch, Legion of Boom. Plenty not to like.
