Ovechkin, Caps Top Sabres in OT 5-4
Alex Ovechkin scored twice and assisted on Mike Green's game-winning goal in overtime, lifting the Capitals to a 5-4 OT win over the Sabres on Tuesday. Cody Hodgson added two for Buffalo and Phil Varone scored his first NHL goal.
Washington wasted little time in grabbing the early lead. Ovechkin was credited with two goals in less than a minute, the first coming just 3:49 into the game. He stepped into a shot moments after a faceoff to the left of Enroth, sending a rocket into the Buffalo net. The Capitals forward struck again 53 seconds later, deflecting a Mike Green shot past Enroth, making it 2-0.
The Sabres cut the Washington lead in half later in the period on Christian Ehrhoff's fourth goal of the season. Ehrhoff jumped up on the play and jammed home a Matt Moulson rebound to get Buffalo on the board. Cody Hodgson tied it up with a power play goal 1:41 into the second period off a pretty pass from Moulson. Moments later, Ehrhoff nearly gave the Sabres the lead with what would have been his second of the night, but the defenseman ripped a shot off the post.
With Jhonas Enroth caught out of position, Mike Green's wraparound goal gave the Caps a 3-2 lead, but the Sabres struck right back on Phil Varone's first NHL goal. Varone tapped a Marcus Foligno feed past Braden Holtby, knotting the score 3-3. Washington regained the lead later in the period with Henrik Tallinder in the penalty box for hooking. Troy Brouwer took advantage, beating Enroth with a slapshot to put the Capitals up 4-3.
Hodgson's second goal of the night tied it at 6:48 of the third. Hodgson danced through traffic and snapped a shot over Holtby's left shoulder to even the score once again. Green's second goal of the evening came just a minute into overtime, giving the Caps the 5-4 victory. Ovechkin picked up his second assist and fourth point of the evening, sliding the puck over to Green who popped it past Enroth for the win.
The Sabres travel to Phoenix on Thursday to face the Coyotes at 9 p.m. Pregame begins at 8 p.m., followed by the play by play on WGR and the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network.

I guess the guys didn't get the message. There are still a few teams battling for points for something called playoffs! Hey Pat & gang, time for the fire sale; everything must go!!
Pathetic goaltending again costs the Sabres
And......the silence remains deafening. What a pathetic Joke!!! I'm convinced now that the Sabres won't make the playoffs for the third straight season. Again...What a pathetic Joke!!!
BRING ON THE EXCUSES!!!
would of won if miller was in the net..
WGR Fan Poll Today (How I'd Run The Sabres)
I didn't vote. That's up to GM when he wakes up from his slumber, but if it were me, I've been saying it all along...BRING IN THE BULLDOZERS AND START CLEARING OUT THIS ENTIRE ROSTER BEGINNING NOW BY TRADING MILLER FIRST. I'd plan on having a whole new roster including two new goaltenders ready for October opening the 2014-15 season and plan on making playoffs and contending for the Stanley Cup with Laviolette behind the bench. I hate repeating myself. Idea of the day: How about doing a poll on doing a complete housecleaning at WGR including the beat reporter? Curious how the listeners would vote. USE VOTING MACHINES AT THE FNC so they can't get fixed by Jeremy doing a poll on here. Enough said.
Fast Fact, Rumor, and another Fast Fact
Washington left Buffalo without Miller.( Let' the Buzz know) Latest: Callahan and Girardi to the Sabres in a deal with the Rangers.(the Buzz) All I see... it's business as usual.

You've been watching the Sabres all season and you're just now figuring out that they won't make the playoffs????????? They aren't trying to make the playoffs this year.......
playoffs wasn't in sight anyway!
Not to be rude or anything like that. but this season is seeing on how are they are going to fix these problems. Ted,pat, tim jobs is to see what they got to work with for next year. they have to work with the worst team in the league. Thats not a easy job to do when you don't have the players to do it with. they trade the players that had the touch to at lease to score more goals. remember evrybody wanted them to be gone; So now when you see them scoring goals somewhere else. It shows that they wasn't so washup after all. darcy trade these players for picks so we got the picks; but all we got were rookies to play with pro players. and you knew that wasn't going to work in the first place. And ted,pat or tim are not making excuses; hell they are mad just like we are. So stop all the lets fire ted or pat or tim. and let them do their jobs. when the draft comes I'm sure they are going to do what best for the team. You got to remember its hard to get a player to give his all. When he knows he might not even be hear next season. Because what they are going to say to them self; Why take a chance on getting injury. When i can save my all for the next team that i will be on. Hey don't that sound just like what mike and the rest of the coaches did to the bills. I'm not going to teach everything to the bills players; just enough to get me and my boys this chance with the browns. Now tell me that this wasn't plan out even before; they sign with the bills. So that what the sabres are doing right now. you don't want to give your all, then see ya! and good luck on finding your new team.
Seriously? You're convinced NOW that they won't make the playoffs? They haven't been close all season! There aren't any excuses. They are not talented enough (except Miller) to play against other NHL teams. They are AHL caliber and everyone knows it. They dumped their "ready" players and people want heads to roll? Let's hope there is a "vision" in place for this rebuild. It thankfully won't include any armchair GM's.
Re: Pathetic goaltending again costs the Sabres
LOL at anyone wanting this team to make the playoffs. You build a good team from the draft, so suck it up. We need to finish at the bottom to get real talent. Just making the playoffs isn't an accomplishment if we can't go all the way.
Re: Pathetic goaltending costs the Sabres...
Do you live with your head under a rock? The Sabres have declared on numerous occasions that they're rebuilding - they're going for a high draft pick this year! Bring on the excuses??? Where have you been?!
Enroth in Net
Enroth has given the Sabres some amazing performances and many amazing saves. Alternatively, he's let in some goals that should have been easy saves. I legitimately see flashes of Hasek in Enroth's netminding, but what is up with his inconsistency? Can anyone please weigh in?
Would it kill Ennis to be a little more aggresive on his backcheck. If he was it could have saved the game. Just another example of why this teams loses so very often. No effort no will.
Another joke... Gimme the 411 on the 716. Really?? They're building a multi-million dollar facility and THAT'S the name they come up with. Great creativity, NOT! The explanation is that it's "us." Frankly if it weren't for the 585, 416, 289, 507, 647, and many more that building would be empty for games. You want to bring people to hockey heaven, and you pigeonhole them into a hellish name for a restaurant. Rethink!

The heck with the NHL combine and Harbor Center, FIX THIS DAM HOCKEY TEAM!!!
I love how much harder the Sabres are playing. With so many new faces in the lineup... and also for each game, it's difficult to beat a veteran team where the players know each others tenancies. They are working harder and now are scoring goals. Leino is a bust.
Re: Fire Sale?
Murray is another phony choocha dash. Coming to the FNC in October...WALMART 2.
Re: Pathetic goaltending again costs the Sabres
It just NOW dawned on you that the Sabres won't make the playoffs this year?!?!? WOW where ya been, listening to Hockey Hotline?
So they're rebuilding
Let's get a look at Lieuwen or Hackett in goal the rest of the season since they're doing just that.
I like that idea of the day
CALLAHAN. GET HIM!!!
Re: HIRE NOLAN!!!!
The word you are butchering is TENDANCIES. Hard to take your drivel seriously when you cannot spell properly.
Well i knew they was not going to make the playoffs. Because i'm not going to disagree with a person. When that person is right. To me that just being blind to the real truth of the matter. We as sabres fans read most of people comments; on how we got a bad team. Its hurts but it is what it is. But to come out and call miller a bum, or yeah lets fire ted,or pat or tim. Is Nothing but nosie. We all want to see the blue and gold back on top right? So don't you think miller should be a part of that. Because schopp think we as fans are just plain idiots. But what we want to know which idiot gave him a job on wgr. He need to go back to school;and learn how to respect people better.
