Special Teams Help Sabres Edge Coyotes 3-2
Steve Ott scored a power play goal and Zemgus Girgensons added a shorthanded tally in the third period, leading the Sabres to a 3-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday.
Tyler Ennis put the Sabres ahead 6:08 into the game, lifting a rebound past an out-of-position Thomas Greiss. Girgensons got the play started near the side of the net, powering the puck to Matt Moulson in front of the crease. Greiss stopped Moulson, but couldn't get back in time for Ennis' rebound shot, giving the Sabres a 1-0 lead.
Phoenix continued to pepper Ryan Miller with shots as the period went on and finally broke through on the power play, an Antoine Vermette backhand shot that went through Chad Ruhwedel and into the net. The Coyotes took the lead only 18 seconds later on David Moss' sixth of the season, putting Phoenix ahead 2-1 heading to the second period.
Buffalo tied it up with a power play goal at 6:38 of the second on Ott's eighth of the year. The Sabres captain jammed home a loose puck in front of the net to make it 2-2. Girgensons put the Sabres ahead to stay with a shorthanded goal just 1:30 into the third, poking the puck off Keith Yandle's stick and into the Phoenix net. Miller made several big stops late, part of 38 overall for the Buffalo netminder. Greiss finished with 25 saves in the loss.
Matt Moulson suffered an injury during the third period and did not return. Ted Nolan did not specify the severity of Moulson's injury, but said the team should know more soon.
The Sabres stay out west for a 3:00 faceoff in Colorado on Saturday. Catch all the action on WGR 550 and the Buffalo Sabres Radio Network.
