The Buffalo Bandits five-game win streak was snapped Saturday night in Rochester as they were defeated by the Knighthawks 9-6.
Buffalo trailed the entire game as the offense struggled to find the back of the net. The Bandits were shutout for the first 38:39 of regulation, which marked the first time in franchise history Buffalo was held scoreless in the first half of a game. They have been shutout for an entire second half on two occassions, most recently in 2010.
The Bandits defense kept the game close as they surrendered only five goals in the first half. Rochester did not get on the board until 10:31 of the first quarter on shorthanded goal by Joe Walters.
Buffalo's offense finally woke up late in the third quarter as they scored four goals in a span of 3:30 to get within a goal. The Knighthawks regained the momentum at the end of the quarter when Cody Jamieson scored a power play in the closing seconds to stretch the lead to two again.
Rochester held the lead through the final quarter while Buffalo took some bad penalties late in the game to spoil any chance of a comeback.
Cory Vitarelli led all goal scorers with a hat trick for the Knighthawks. Dan Dawson, Cody Jamieson and Joel McCready each had four-point games. Ryan Benesch led the Bandits with two goals and two assists.
Matt Vinc got revenge on a Bandits team that got him pulled after three quarters in their last meeting. He stopped 33 of the 39 shots he faced. Anthony Cosmo had another solid outing for Buffalo as he made 40 saves on 49 shots.
The Bandits maintain first place in the NLL East despite falling to 5-2 on the season. They hold a half-game lead on 4-2 Rochester. Buffalo returns home on Saturday to host the Philadelphia Wings on Saturday.
