Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550) -- Life after Mike Pettine is in full swing at One Bills Drive, where the Buffalo Bills have rounded out head coach Doug Marrone's staff following the departure of the former defensive coordinator and some of their assistants along with him.
The Bills have a new linebackers coach and defensive line coach, along with three new hires on the offensive side of the ball. The team announced all the hires over the course of the past two weeks, once Jim Schwartz had accepted the offer to become Buffalo's new defensive coordinator.
Knowing Schwartz from his time in Cleveland, the Bills' new defensive line coach Pepper Johnson was eager to get a fresh start with a new coaching staff. He had spent the past 14 seasons as a member of Bill Belichick's staff in a number of different capacities.
Johnson played his college football at Ohio State, where Buffalo's new linebackers coach Fred Pagac held a job for 23 years in Columbus. Pagac has had three different NFL stops since leaving college, but most notably spent the past eight seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.
On the offensive side of the ball, the biggest name added to the staff has been a coach on that side of the ball for the past 14 seasons. As Buffalo's senior offensive assistant, Jim Hostler will help offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and Marrone as the team attempts to rectify their offense for 2014.
In 2013, Hackett attempted to take the reigns and serve as both the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in his first season being in charge of an offense. To help Hackett not spread himself so thin, the Bills elected to bring in a quarterbacks coach that is familiar with former first-round pick EJ Manuel.
Todd Downing, the quarterbacks coach of the Detroit Lions for the past three seasons, coached Manuel during the 2013 Senior Bowl when the Bills signal caller won the game's MVP award.
Rounding out the staff for the Bills and replacing one of the only two positions that Marrone let go following the end of the season, Buffalo hired Rob Moore as their new wide receivers coach. Moore comes to the Bills from Syracuse University where he worked with Marrone for three seasons before the coach made the jump to the NFL. Moore cited "personal reasons" why he didn't make the jump in 2013, but says he's ready now.
The Bills and their staff have one more week to get everything in order before they head to Indianapolis for the annual NFL Scouting Combine. The event is set to begin on Wednesday, February 19.
Big fat guard, big fast WR, big mean LB..... Get after it!
WHERE BRUCE DEHAVEN? looks like Marroney has a "sacred " sidekick? how can Marrone tell us he is doing all he can to make the Bills better when his Special Teams Coach is horrible- Dehaven is out there ? sign him
What about special teams?
That was a joke if you didn't notice.
I agree with the big draft.
Now that the coaches are in place, lets give the team what they need in this draft. By now everybody agrees that the line should come first. LB should come second. Then wideout because their are a lot in this draft. And you got to have a TE; The only problem is going to be who is going to be their for their second pick and so on. But if that person that they got on their board. Then you go with the next player that can play postion but just need to be taught. And like i said before they got the coaches now to do that. You see with mike it was just mike and donnie. the rest of them really wasn't doing anything anyway and it showed. Now we got coaches to coach coaches in other words to pick up on little things that marrone might of have miss. So with that in place and the system haven't change that much. the players will pick up the new schemes faster. The thing i do like about this plan the most is. Teams are going to be looking for the bills to run mike d or marrone offense. and bom they are going to see the bills do something they didn't do last year. And won't have a answer to stop it. Now that going to be great to see. Lets go ruff buff.
thumbs up Marrone
I like Marrone's decisiveness in hiring new assistants. Looks like he has a plan and is executing it. Looking forward to see what they can get from the players on the field and new schemes.
It was sad to see Pettine leave and take most of the D coaches with him.Marrone & Whaley hired a GREAT group of coaches to replace them. The Bills will be a better team for it!
Re: Big Draft
If we're talking about the draft, draft a QB. The Bills' QB is what will determine whether they make it to the playoffs.
we have a QB would you like someone like cap ?
re: to hey.
Well bruce dehaven is coaching for another team. But we do understand the the specail team were bad last year. and crossman will be getting players this year to improve that unit. But if he dosen't get the players to fall in place. This might be a reach, but their still is steve tasker. I mean why not he was the best for us while he was playing. And soon he should be in the hof, for his efforts. Just a thought.
Draft Holds the Key....
...to the future of the Bills. With the same GM and scouts in place, there is no reason to believe the Bills will miss on the draft. I can only hope that they hit this draft like last year. Couple this draft ( 1st - TE or WR, 2nd - Guard, 3rd - LB ) with a few key free agents which may alter the draft necessity and this team may be on it way to the post season.
Another thought is Cleveland's head coach probably is regretting the move since the GM in Cleveland had nothing to do with his hire. For Petine, NFL will stand for Not For Long as Glandville once proclaimed.
re; to draft holds the key
You are also right. Boy where have you been, Its like you said if they draft that way. Its only going to make the bills stronger. Me myself i don't care what order they draft these players. But its got to go right down that list as you have shown. And they will make the playoffs for real. And the comment about mike is so true. Mike and the rest of them who left us. are going to see who really running that team. When they start losing and things start going really bad. You almost see the words in the paper Mike fired from his first coaching job. Not to wish mike bad luck, but he must of forgot who he will be playing for. But hey good luck to them because they are going to need it.
